Anyone have the absolute best sugar cookie recipe ever

Hey, glad to see my thread is alive!

Stinkerbelle,

Yes, there is a slight difference with the shortening and the butter

First, of course, is the taste. I like real butter!!!

However, I am thinking that with the butter you will get a 'crisper' cookie, and with the shortening, you will get a slightly 'softer' cookie.

Since I like to bake with real butter. (yummy) I often use 1/2 butter and 1/2 shortening!

These are the best sugar cookies I've ever made! It's an old fashioned recipe (my dh's grandmother):
Grammy's Sugar Cookies

2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. salt
1 cup shortening
1 cup milk
1 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
Enough flour to thicken (its a different amount of flour every time I make it)

Cream sugar, eggs, salt and shortening. Add milk, soda, and baking powder. Add enough flour to thicken. Roll out dough and use cookie cutters for your favorite shapes. Bake 350 for 10-12 minutes.
Very moist and tastes wonderful with frosting on top!

The more flour you add to the cookie dough when you roll it out and the more you work it, the less tender/flaky your cookies will be. When I roll mine out, I take small portions of dough at a time and use the smaller portion up before I take another portion of dough. That way it doesn't get rolled/worked so much.

Another thing I learned about rolling out sugar cookies. Do not use flour when rolling our your dough. Use powdered sugar. Using 10X sugar instead of flour will not give you a overly floury taste to your cookies.

Thanks for the explanation!
(we'll just chalk that up to another thing mom never taught me before I moved out! heheh)

DH likes this recipe with shortening...cause it's his mom's recipe (you KNOW how that goes! hehe) I made the dough last night and will roll them out tonight. Now the trick will be keeping DH away from them! (I'll have to make a plate just for him to eat tonight! heheh)
