We had a purebred border collie - she passed away last summer at the age of 10.
This was our experience, which we've been told is quite normal for the breed:
Shedding - yes, and LOTS. They have long hair - if you skip even one day of brushing, you'll have a brand new carpet color.
If you let them outside, you need to constantly check for ticks.
They need A LOT of excersize and attention. They are not the kind of dog that can live in a city backyard - and they really don't make good housedogs. Not enough room to run.
Remember that they are a working breed - they herd. Our dog would herd our cats and young children by attempting to nip their ankles.
Ours was a major barker - we got constant complaints from our neighbors.
All in all, our dog was a good dog. If you have enough acreage and give them tons of attention, they'll be great. Very intelligent. They do what they want.
