Our local comcast cable company is raising there rates again and I am sick of the high prices I am paying for just a basic cable. They even took away the Travel channel!! I was wondering if anyone has or has had any experience with Direct TV. Good/bad
reception? Any advice would be helpful...thanks.

My Dad has it up in Vermont due to no cable available there. They had 2 days of heavy rain last week and 2 days of no TV.

Have DirectTV and love it. I agree that heavy rain, snow or lightning storms can cause interruption of service.

DW and I always find other things to do when the TV isn't working. ;)

I have had Direct tv since June of 2001, and have only lost it once or twice due to weather. I love it, and just got Tivo as well... well worth every penny. (I had DISH network for 4 years before Direct tv, and am much happier with Direct tv.)

We use Dish Network, but I know your pain. My MIL's cable bill (I think she has comcast also) just went up to like $75! The only extra channel she has is HBO, and she only gets the one HBO! Our Dish bill is like $40 for America's Top 100 plus local channels. If we wanted to add HBO, we could get like 10 channels of HBO for only 9.99/month I think. She's about to switch too. It does kinda suck when you lose your signal though, which happens when it gets too cloudy and the signal can't get through or something. But here in Texas, that doesn't happen too often. It happens to us about once every three months or so and we'll only lose the signal for a few minutes. From what I've heard, Dish Network is suppose to be better about keeping a signal.

We have had DirecTV for several years and really like it. We live in the country so cable was not an option for us. We just have the basics, no movie channels (had them but didn't watch them much so let them go, don't miss them) and pay $33.99 per month. We rarely have service interruptions, unless it's raining really, really hard. And even then it's usually only for a few minutes. Or sometimes in the winter it will "search for signal" and we go out and brush the snow off the dish. :teeth:

That may depend on where you are or something. We switched to DirecTV about 2 1/2 years ago from Dish Network. We don't loose the signal near as often now. I've been happy with them and their customer service.

We have had Direct TV for many many years now, and we LOVE IT!

As a matter of fact, for christmas I just got the Direct Tv Tivo for my bedroom! Tivo is awesome! So if you are really serious about getting Direct TV, I'd suggest spending the $99 and getting the Tivo box while you're at it.

A lot of people worry about loosing the signal during rain or weather in general, and you should know that the only time our signal goes out is when there is HEAVY HEAVY rain. Please don't think it's will disappear due to a light shower or a moderate thunderstorm.

I say make the switch!:sunny:

Another directv fan here..we have had it for a year now. It went out twice for a few minutes each time during an unusually heavy rain.

We to were sick of getting ripped off by the cable company..an increase here an increase there. I only had basic cable and I think it was paying near $40 a month.

I saw an ad in Radio Shack for a dish and two receivers … get a $100 rebate..along with free installation. So I really got the hardware for nothing. I did the installation myself because I like doing things like that…it was a breeze to install.

So I really showed the cable company..I dropped them like a hot potato. Oh by the way I was paying $40 a month for basic cable …I am now paying $100 a month for directv….I could not resist getting ALL of the channels.

I have :

Total choice premier w/local channels ----87.99
DIRECTV – The Guide Monthly (mailed) ---4.99
Charge for the secord receiver ---------------4.99

I figured I would just try ALL the channels out for a while and drop them later on….but I got hooked. I don't go to video rental stores anymore I see most of the movies I would have rented on the tube now.

Another thing I love about satellite are the menus….

Good luck!

Yet another happy DirecTV customer.

I have had it for just over 8 years and have had very few problems. Before I had the dish I had cable for about 15 months and have yet to have had as many problems with the dish as I did with cable. Most problems are weather-related, but as Steven Wright once said "You can't have everything, where would you put it?"

I cannot recommed it enough. One word of warning... just make sure that you have a clear view of the south, or to be more precise, if you can figure it out, a clear view of the airspace over Texas (which I guess would be almost due south from you, huh? :teeth: ). Also, since you are in a snow area, make sure that you can easily get to the dish in case you have to do snow removal.

All in all, any trouble you have with weather interruptions are more than worth what you get in return.

DirectTV is great and you do get Travel Channel & 3 Disney Channels(West,East and Toon) :) I did lose a couple of days of Angel on TNT due to singal problems but it's worth the switch

Another vote FOR DirecTv! Only a few minor interruptions here in the City due to weather but, we have other TV's not hooked up so, we watch somewhere else until it comes back on.

What I like MOST about it is being able to go 1-1/2 days ahead and select all your programs! This is great for selecting DD's morning programs while I sleep in. ;)

I would love to try directv especially since I good get HDTV..but what about my cable modem?

They have DirecPC which I think works very much the same way. At least I THINK they still have it. As I sit here thinking about it I have not seen it advertised in a while. It's at least worth a look.

We have DirectTV and a cable modem, we just pay for both separately. For Time Warner, you dont need to have cable service to get Roadrunner. It's a separate charge.

It's still cheaper than having TW Cable Service and roadrunner.

I'm on Adelphia and they give you a pretty hefty discount to do both.. have to figure it all out!

we had comcast also, two years ago. the prices forced me to move over to dish network!! we LOVE it, we have never lost a signal..even with all this weird new england wheather! we moved in oct. had cable for one week,NEVER again!! I save over 30 bucks a month and get so much more! even disneyn and west!

We have had DirecTv for about a year and we like it a lot! Ours has only gone out twice for a few minutes each time, due to heavy rain as others have stated. The best part is getting Toon Disney - I watch it every day!

we have had Direct TV for several years and are very pleased with it. I can count on one hand the number of times it has gone out in that time frame and it's only been for short periods (less than 1/2 hour).

We just upgraded to a TiVo in September and it is the greatest thing ever!

I recommend Direct TV and TiVo to everyone who asks!
