I have a couple tenacious little buggers on my left knee. We tried freezing them and tried salicylic acid several times. They either came back or never went away really. So my dermatologist recommended this procedure (Non FDA approved BTW). They paint this stuff/chemical (DCP) on a spot on your hip and if you develop an allergic reaction to it over a few days they then give you a diluted amount of the DCP to paint on the warts. Essentially it tricks your body into thinking it's allergic to the warts.
So who has had it done? Has it worked? How long did it take? How were the "side effects"?
The initial sensitization on my hip was brutal. The derm told me it would feel like poison ivy. Itchy, a little burning. Well, HOLY MOLY....The spot burned like I had been branded, then blistered with huge water filled blisters. Then a week later when I went back for them to check the sensitization, it began itching so bad I wanted to claw right through my hip! It's still red and looks like road rash (nearly 3 weeks later) and itches like a muthah. I went back to the derm and made them give me something for the itch (gave me a topical high powered steroid ointment.)
So the warts themselves? Well I applied the stuff as directed last week (only goes on once per week) and it wasn't easy. The applicator is just a glass stick to "drip" or "dab" the stuff on but the liquid is so watery that it doesn't stay on the stick and you can hardly get it where you need it! I dabbed it on with a q-tip instead (but that's not so great since the q-tip just soaks up the liquid). I went out and bought a tiny paint brush to apply it tonight.
However, the warts I applied it to look worse than ever! The biggest one appears to have more than doubled in size, and the smaller ones are bright red, and look larger now too! And all of it itches like mad. The steroid ointment helps a lot, but I was told the treatment could take a few MONTHS...no way I want to be itchy and gross for a few months.
Why oh why wouldn't they just surgically remove them??? (derm said there were too many...four, with one being an inch long and a two others in clusters).
I am grossed out by this all. Please tell me someone else has gone through it and it's worth it.
