Anyone have any experience with hospital psychosis?

My father has been in ICU for 2 weeks now. On the day he was scheduled to be discharged (a week ago), he became completely confused, began hallucinating, became nasty to family members and his personality has completely changed. They did a brain MRI and ruled out everything (no brain tumor, stroke, etc.) It's unbelievable how much has changed.

Anyone familiar with this?

How old is your dad?

My father-in-law had the same behavior when he got a bladder infections from indweling cathers, he was otherwise perfectly lucid and coherent. For some reason, a bladder infection can turn an elderly person into a complete mess cognitively. He was back to himself when he was treated with simple antibiotics and infection cleared. So it may be a long shot, but worth a simple urine test if he had a catheter while in the hospital.

Hope you find the cause of the problem. I know how upsetting this is for the family!

Thank you all! I am happy to report that my father is quite well now, back to his lucid, coherent self. Remarkably enough, he did indeed have some kidney issues, catheter in place, which caused an infection. That has all been rectified and he is doing much better now.

I have experience in this with a family member with a UTI. Keep it in mind if this ever happens again. I don't think people realize what a UTI can do and it is very scary but thank goodness it can be treated. take care
