My boys are campaigning for a pet. They are doing extremely well taking care of the "visiting" cat. DH & I talked and decided that maybe they are ready for a pet of their own. They want a "wiener/hot dog" dog. I believe they mean a Dauschhound (sp?). Are these dogs normally good with children? Do they shed much? Any good websites on selecting pets?

DH's elderly aunt has one...the longer haired ones. He's teeny so I can't imagine he sheds awhole lot, but the short-haired type probably shed less :)
I don't know what the tendencies of the breed are in general, but this one is definitely not good with kids - or visitors in general. He's rather snippy, but it could be as much his environment and upbringing as his inherent temperament. DH thinks he'spretty cool and has said we will take him if anything happens to Auntie first, so DH thinks he's not beyond hope.
I'm sorry, my response is absolutely no help at all to you!
I'm sure some other DISers will be along with better info for you!
Good luck! :D

We own one named Barney. He has been in our family for 12 years, and is the sweetest dog, unless anyone tries to take his food away. Normally, I have heard, they are not good with children, however we bought him when I was 4, and he has never attempted to bite me or anything like that. We got him when he was a puppy and he has grown up as I have. Always been a sweetheart.

I personally cannot stand these dogs and I am such a pet lover. The few I have run into have been very protective of their owners and not too good with strangers at all as well as snippy and yappy dogs. Actually this was the breed that bit me in the eye when I was about 6. Trust me, this is the only breed I don't have a nice thing to say about.

We have a 3 year old miniature dapple named Wiley. We've had him since he was 10 weeks old. He LOVES babies, he'll trot up and lick them and then dance away until they play with him. He's good with my Mom's dogs, but he's scared of cats.

He doesn't seem to shed much, but he's a shorthair. He doesn't smell "doggie" either, we really don't have to wash him a lot unless he rolls on something yucky. He's just NOW really catching on to house training, and that's the biggest drawback for me. He's very cuddly and wants nothing more than to hop on my lap and fall asleep. That's what he's doing now.

We don't have any kids, so he isn't around them a whole lot. Good luck with your search for a pet!

We had a mini dachsund named Bambi. She was a sweetheart and great with the kids. However, she was VERY hard to house train and our vet said that anyone who can get them 90% housetrained is doing good. She was also a barker and I don't mean yapping, I mean big bark out of little dog and lots of it! They are also known to be very stubborn and take lots of patience to train. Most dog breed books mention these traits too.

I'll do a little more research but you have convinced me - it's the house training thing that will bother me. As for stubborn & strong willed - there is enough of that in this house :o Hmmmm - guess I'll post a general breed recommendation thread.

Thank you all for your honest replies.

I had a mini named Winnie. She was alot of fun, but she was extremely stubborn. If she didn't get her way, she would run through the house and knock over the garbage cans or she would sneak into the laundry room and chew up clothes.

I've had other dachsund owners tell me chewing was a big problem for them too. My neighbors had one that chewed a 12 x 12 hole in their couch cushion one day while they were at work. :O

Jipsy, you just reminded me of how Wiley initiated our couch by pulling the cushions off and tearing all of the stuffing out of the inside of the couch. He was crated for a while after that, for his safety and our peace of mind. Now he has mutilated stuffed animals strewn around the house along with his other toys, and that usually keeps him busy with chewing.

I think I shared that story in a past Worst Pet Behavior thread. :D Gotta love him!

We had two dachsunds while I was growing up. The first one we got, Barney, was not a pure bred, and he was very good natured, but not very bright. Then we got Gretel, who was a purebred, and she was sharp and very smart, but also very tempermental and very stubborn!

We had these dogs for a long time, and loved them so much, but I would echo what others have said....they are very hard to housetrain, and very stubborn. I don't really remember if they shed, I was a child and teenager, and didn't really notice things like that.

If having a non-shedding dog is important to you, I'd highly recommend a Bichon Frise. We have a 10 month old puppy, and he has been a total joy! He's completely housetrained and is the most loving dog I've ever known! He looks like a very prissy showdog, but he thinks he's a labrador! Very sturdy and adventurous!

I gave up on our dachshund when she was jealous of my son. Holly was the baby until DS arrived. She didn't like NOT being the baby after. The first time she snapped at him I had a fit. The second time she snapped at him, she was gone. She was also very yappy. I had a neighbor complain about her once. And no matter how much she was outside, she would come in and pee on my carpet! No, I wouldn't get one again.

LOL! You just reminded me that Holly used to chew everything up also. The corner of the sofa, the pillows, etc. I ended up following her around the house with Bitter Apple to spray everything.

I, personally, would not HAVE any other Breed, but THIS ONE!;) They get VERY SPOILED and HAVE to sleep in the bed WITH YOU! Yes, they are hard to potty trane, they train YOU , YOU do NOT train them!:o Mine is 14 and had back surgery at 6 years of age, and he is worth EVERY PENNY we spent on him! (3,400.00). he is now 14 but does NOT act like it.
