We had two dachsunds while I was growing up. The first one we got, Barney, was not a pure bred, and he was very good natured, but not very bright. Then we got Gretel, who was a purebred, and she was sharp and very smart, but also very tempermental and very stubborn!
We had these dogs for a long time, and loved them so much, but I would echo what others have said....they are very hard to housetrain, and very stubborn. I don't really remember if they shed, I was a child and teenager, and didn't really notice things like that.
If having a non-shedding dog is important to you, I'd highly recommend a Bichon Frise. We have a 10 month old puppy, and he has been a total joy! He's completely housetrained and is the most loving dog I've ever known! He looks like a very prissy showdog, but he thinks he's a labrador! Very sturdy and adventurous!
