I'm missing WDW and The Rose and Crown's Shepherd's Pie has been on my mind. I would love to try to make the dish but I hesitate because I tried it when DH and I were newlyweds and it both looked and tasted like very bland cat food. So obviously the recipe used is super duper important.

The lovely girl who was waiting on us at the R & C gave me her recipe but I don't remember a single thing she said. So I got to thinking that there have got to be a bunch of folks on here who make it and can give me some examples of recipes. Anyone have any tested and yummy flavorful recipes that can rival Rose and Crown?

I used Gordon Ramsay's recipe and it smelled *fantastic* while it was cooking, but the end result was rather bland for some reason. I'd love to get a good tried-and-true recipe.

I just buy mine at Costco. It's just as good as any I have had. When I make my own I just throw it together. No recipe needed.

Thank you both recipes look yummy, I thought the Dis would come through;)

So is it better with lamb or beef? I can't remember what the Rose and Crown uses. I like lamb in Gyros and some other times, but then there are other times where the taste is just too strong for the dish. I really don't want a repeat of my newlywed catastrophe, any suggestions will be greatly appreciated:goodvibes

We don't have a Costco here : (

I will scout out the UK forum, thanks.

I am not a fan of lamb so I always use ground beef and find it to be just as good. I also used ground turkey once instead and it tasted pretty good.

British-born here. Technically, shepherd's pie is made with lamb. If you use beef it is "cottage pie." Gordon Ramsay once had a 5 minute tirade on the subject, :lmao:

I prefer to use lean beef to ground lamb which can be a bit greasy and bland. I don't usually use a recipe, just add things and taste, but this recipe is fairly close to how I make "cottage pie."

I also use a healthy dash of Worcestershire sauce to season, simmer a bay leaf with the meat (remove before combining) and try to use fresh herbs.

Also, I've been known to use this dish as a way to hide extra veggies from reluctant veggie eaters. I've used peas, but also sometimes chopped zucchini, grated carrot, finely chopped kale or spinach . . .(Shhh, don't give me away -- those dark green bits are yummy herbs!)

just a hint-if you decide to go with ground lamb, just ask the butcher at the grocery store to take whatever cut of lamb you will be buying to do the grinding for you. i have yet to encounter any of the butchers at safeway or any of the other chain stores that don't grind meat of any type for free.
