I am thinking of buying a Nook before our upcoming cruise. The B&N website says it is wireless with AT&T. What if you don't have AT&T? How would I download a book then? The website also says you can surf the web and check email via the NOOK. Our home has wireless internet. Our internet provider is our cable company. Will I be able to use my Nook for checking my email this way?

Sorry, I am not tech savy but I really like the idea of a Nook. It also says you can get ebooks from your library. Is this easy to do?

I would love any input before I had to the bookstore tomorrow. Thanks!

The wireless service is not connected to your home provider, nor to your cell phone provider.

I have a Kindle so I'm not sure about the Nook specifications, but I assume it's the same. I can download wirelessly with my Kindle using Sprint's service, because that is the company Amazon has contracted with. I'm not a Sprint customer otherwise.

I have a Nook. I'm sooo not computer savvy, either and I literally pulled it out of the box, touched the Wi-Fi button and it found my home router. I just had to enter the WEP code on the router into the Nook and I was all set. It was really easy.

For downloading into my library, I simply touch the "SHOP" button and it sends me to the B&N ebook store. Love, love, love my Nook!

HTH!:thumbsup2

I am charging my nook as I type this.

The 3G service for the nook is indeed on the AT&T network, but the service will cost you nothing. It also has WiFi capability. I have mine configured to use WiFi so it connects thru my home network when I am at home. If you go to a B&N store, it is pre-configured to use the WiFi there as well, and you will get special offers presented to you while you are using your nook in the store. If you don't have an available WiFi connection, it will use the AT&T 3G network - not as fast as WiFi but it still allows you to purchase and download books.

I only use the WiFi/3G connection if I need to download something - otherwise I put the nook in "airplane" mode which turn off all the networking and conserves the battery life.

As for your question about borrowing books from the library: IF your local library has this service available, you can check out e-books from the library in ePub format and they can be downloaded to your nook. Unfortunately for me, my local library does not have this service for anything but non-fiction titles. Some library systems will allow you get a card from them for a fee if you do not live within the local area and they will allow you to borrow from the e-library.

We don't have AT&T either but my Nook works just fine with our WiFi at home. We even set it up to work with the hotels WiFi when we went out of town for my bday last month. You won't have any problems using any WiFi to get your books. :) You can also buy them on B&N and then download them to your Nook, easy peasy. I've done it both ways and when I noticed I was having a problem (that many other Nook owners were having) I took it to the store and while there it just randomly downloaded some new book....LOL I didn't even have it in my hands when it did it, the manager was checking it with their tech support in the back and it had a new book when we got it home. I haven't tried to do much with the web part of it, the browser is very basic and I prefer the laptop or desktop to the Nook for internet.

If an ereader comes with a free 3G service, what's the point of it also having wi-fi? Just curious...

speed. 3g is slower then wifi.

But how much does that matter when you are downloading a book? My 3G downloads a book from Amazon in about 60 seconds - why would you need additional wi-fi? Isn't a minute fast enough?:rotfl:

Just curious about this as it seems to be a selling feature for the Nook but an unnecessary feature as far as I am concerned...
