My DD wants some type of herb garden for Christmas. They have the terrarium ones on amazon for about $25. Then I got to thinking that maybe it would make more sense to just buy all the stuff myself and give it to her that way.

But what would I need? We have NO green thumbs in this family
Could I even find seedlings in Dec? What about seeds.. can we grow them in upstate NY in the dead of winter?

I really want to do this for her, but not if it's a $20 disappointment.. thanks!

Woody Harrelson not only grows them but make clothes out of them

My sister grows a few herbs at her home in the winter. I'm not sure how she does it, but it's something her sons wanted to do. I don't have details but from what I gathered it was pretty straight forward. She bought a kit which came with instructions and went from there.

Good luck!

My sister grows them. She buys plants and puts them into whatever pots she has and keeps them in her kitchen near the window. I guarantee she is doing nothing to keep them alive. When they start to droop she waters them, but she forgets to do it most of the time on her own. They seem to be fairly hardy on their own. I think she buys most of hers at Whole Foods.

I think you could buy some pretty pots at Walmart (or possibly even a thrift store) inexpensively and buy the plants so they are ready to go instead of having to grow from seed. You could always start with 2 or 3 plants and then add in the future if she stays interested.

ETA: While I was typing, Bilberry was too. It most be a sister thing. :)

We have an Aerogarden. It works great and we love it. It's a little pricey though.

I can tell you that I tried to bring in my summer herbs so i could have them over the winter and everything is just about dead. All my strong pretty plants withered and died, probably because the house is too cold so now I am considering something with a heat source might be necessary :headache:

If she wants something for the summer you can buy her pots and a gift card to a local garden center so she can pick them out herself in the spring. Herbs are fairly inexpensive running under $4 each.
