Anyone going Geocaching this weekend? **NEW CACHERS...POP IN!**

We haven't been caching since October, before the snow and ice storms. This has been a miserable winter around here weather-wise so we've been mostly hibernating (except for work and errands).

In other news:
Our son is now a Crew Chief for the Blue Angels #1 jet! They are currently training in El Centro, CA, where the airshow season will begin in only 2 weeks! We will get to see him in action in Millville, NJ, Memorial Day weekend.
And, our daughter is expecting our 4th grandchild (a girl) in about 3 weeks!

Good caching!

So, as an introduction to geocaching, we bought a geomate jr. It says on the packaging "so easy, an adult can use it"..... we'll see about that. I think it has 125,000 caches built in.

Bunsen...It sounds like you had quite a fun day! :) I love finding caches in new territory.

Mike...It's so neat to hear that Erin is a geocacher! Congrats on grandbaby #4 being on the way, and CONGRATULATIONS to your son! How awesome!!! How great to have such an exciting career.:banana:

jlmarr...I'm sorry to read that story. That must have been the incident I heard about through the grapevine a bit back. Hoping it was an old archived cache no one picked up rather than an active cache.

BCB...Hope you're having a blast with this addiction/hobby/sport!

Nothing new here. Haven't gone caching in ages. It's just a huge year with darling son, and he's taken the forefront on things...senior year of high school, trying to get set up for college in the fall, a new girlfriend, lacrosse. I'd like to move, he says...go ahead. I'm staying here. Ha! Such a lovely time. LOL! :3dglasses

Hope all is well! Happy caching! :magnify:

Just curious - are geocachers exceptionally good at Easter egg hunts? ;)

Nope....too many muggles around.....we just walk around and pretend that the eggs aren't there. Occasionally we'll take the time to tell the egg owner that the coordinates are off and the ratings are too low.

My family and I just recently started geocaching. I had heard of it but never got started doing it until we took our first camping trip in March. We are now addicted! (Although we don't get to do it near as much as we would like to!) And there are a ton of caches in our area! I am looking forward to doing an "extreme" cache find one day!

We had been borrowing a GPS from my hubby's work until we got our own and today I picked up the Magellan eXplorist GC from Target for 37.48!!! :cool1: (I had been watching it and it finally went to 75% off today) I just wanted to mention it in case anyone on here is looking for a new handheld to specifically geocache with.

I was hoping it would be on the website as Target is 10 miles away..... no such luck. And who knows if they even have it in stock?

Go here: http://sites.target.com/site/en/spot/mobile_fiats.jsp?title=fiats&asin=&dpci=057-16-0045&storeNumber and put in your zip. If it says Low Available Stock, it typically means they have one or two left (which is all mine carried anyway). But they don't update the stock except every night, so there is the possibility that someone bought it today. (But don't call, cause it will alert the cashier to a good deal and they might just keep it themselves and tell you its not there, unless you know someone there personally that you trust.)

Thank you for the heads up on this great deal! I've been dragging my feet about getting one, but this cinched it for me. So excited!

So were you able to get one? I hope so! :thumbsup2 I am so excited about it! It really seems like its a great GPS! And I am excited to get a free month of the premium membership too! (Its the little things that get my tractor cranked I guess! :rotfl:)

Darn, they are sold out at all the Targets in my area!

I am so glad this thread was revived, I didn't even know there was a group on the dis! They just started to offer geocache classes at my son's school & I was looking into getting my family started on this. So, for the beginner family with elementary school kids, which handheld GPS would our disboard experts recommend?

Thanks for your help & advice! :flower3:

Yes, I grabbed the last one! I've enjoyed playing with it in the house, but haven't gone out with it yet. Can't wait to make my first find!

:banana::banana:YEAH!!! I'm glad someone else got in on the deal!

DD is off of school on Monday so we are headed to the beach that day and there are several geocaches in that area that we will be in so I am hoping to use mine for the first time on Monday! I will have to report back on how the GPS did and how we did on our finds!!

Welcome to all the new geocachers!

We still have not been out other than to do maintenance on a few of our caches due to the winter weather and rain this spring. We hope to get out sometime soon!

We visited our local Target today and I checked for the Magellan GC but didn't see any. Too bad. The 'Net does list it as limited availability but I didn't see any GPSr's other than the car type.

In family news: We were blessed with our 4th grandchild on March 27th! Anna Rose is now our third DGD to go along with one DGS! So far, she is doing well.

And, our son David now has several airshows under his belt with the Blues. He is the crew chief for the CO and the #1 blue jet. We will get our first chance to see him over Memorial Day weekend in Millville, NJ. We can't wait!

Good caching, everyone! And, have a Joyous Easter!

Congrats MiJo on your new DGD and for your DS accomplishments! That is awesome! I know you can't wait to see your DS in action! :thumbsup2

As far as looking for the Magellan, did you look above the glass case that contains the car GPSs? Because they didn't have our Magellan eXplorist in it, it was on a locked hanger right above the glass case, next to the Geomate Jr.'s (which were also clearanced but I didn't see very many good reviews on it and the GC seemed to be the much better deal based on what each can do) and next to all the GPS accessories.

I have a question for anyone that has the eXplorist and has used it, if I have downloaded waypoints before adding the premium membership and now I want to add the premium membership so that I can get the descriptions and hints, will it put two of the same waypoints on it when I download it again or will it just add to the already existing waypoint? I was trying to download the numerous caches that will be at the park we will be at on Monday and after downloading them without activating the membership, I realized that it doesn't have any descriptions or hints which being beginner geocachers, we definitely need those!! :)

So, a local library is having a free 2.5 hour class on geocaching on June 16th. We can't wait. The whole family is attending, even my wife. That's quite a feat in itself.

Anyway, we decided to bite the bullet and get a "real" GPS. We went on amazon and bought a Garmin eTrex Legend HCx Personal Navigator. It seems to have almost all great reviews.

Any of you have it? And if so, what do you think about it?

I didn't think it would be good to bring a geomate, especially since they plan to show us how to use the GPS.

So glad to see this topic here! I was considering getting a GPS for my sweetie for Father's day, but when I started looking into the price, I decided we will just borrow my Dad's GPS for a trial run to see if we like Geocaching. I have been reading the website on how to do it, and we have a very nice park in our area with a lot of different caches.

I thought it might be a great thing for us to do as a family.

Any tips for a newbie?

Be patient
Start with low difficulty caches
Don't get discouraged, it takes a while to develop a 'cachers eye'
Enjoy the walk and surroundings
Bring insect repellant
Have Fun!!

I wanted to take my kids out tonight to find our first cache, but it is 97 degrees and pretty humid, so I decided to wait. Turns out that I was super close to where the cache was hidden, so I decided to "pre-find" it so that my kids aren't disappointed. So, I went and found it. The GPS had me within about 5' of where the actual cache was. This particular one was TOO EASY for an adult, but I think my kids will be thrilled. I picked up the cache, just to make sure it was the cache, then put it back just like I found it. If the heat breaks I will bring the kids and then we will officially "find" it.

It was / is pretty cool. I am pretty sure this will become a hobby of ours.
