Anyone getting the Kindle Fire???

Bought my DH the Nook Color for his birthday (Oct 31st) and he LOVES it! I rooted an SD Card with Android so basically it functions just like an Android Tablet...and I only paid about $150 for it from Overstock...it was a refurb that shipped directly from B&N. It's awesome! I love that we can take out the SD card at anytime and it functions as a Nook. You can expand it at any time with an SD card...a function that is not available for Kindles. Also with the Android Market we can download both the Nook App AND the Kindle App...so it actually can function for as both readers! Now my DH is NOT the reader of the family...but he loves streaming Netflix on the Nook to watch movies at home in bed and playing all of his Google Market games. The kids all want one now too!

I am a little tempted by the new Nook tablet...it's a bit lighter and has a better battery life, but I own a Nook Simple Touch for reading and I use it all of the time. I can borrow books from my local library via their online E-reading service which is free. ;) So yeah, I am completely sold on Nook products!

I'm considering buying one of those as a gift but feel a little strange giving someone a gift that comes with commercials. ;) How distracting are the special offers?
Not distracting at all. The Ads are on the "resting screen" before you turn it on, once it's on you have to toggle to a button to look at the ads (except one will be at the bottom of some of the menu pages) After you open the book to read, the ads are gone. No pop ups or anything like that. The computer technology of that kindleis not good for anything but reading or buying books, in my opinion. I would not rely on it for checking mail or surfing because the graphics and speed are poor. It i ideal for reading though. As I said I have an ipad and although I can read a book on it, it's too heavy and has too much glare to be comfortable carrying it around all day to read. The e-ink on the Kindle is perfect, it's also lightweight and very easy to throw in your purse or beach bag.

Does the Nook color also have a browser, and can it play music and movies?

I just read about both of these(Kindle Fire & the newest Nook) this morning in the WSJ,they say that the Nook is actually the better deal.It has 16gb's,where the Kindle has 8.The Nook does just about everything the I-Pad does, but cost's $250 less! I wanted a Nook before,I may just get it,it's like a tablet!

Something interesting that I read this morning. It seems that B&N is limiting the storage space available on the Nook for content that is not purchased thru B&N to 1GB. The Kindle Fire does not limit the available storage. This was supposedly confimed with B&N.

I want one but can't get it until November 18th. With the preorder, I am worried they will all be gone:sad1: I think it will be perfect for me. I want a reader, but also want to check email, browse the web and watch movies. Our school just got Ipads and we have been trying them out. They are too big for what I want and my arm aches from holding the dang thing. Plus, $500 is just too much. I thought of an Ipod Touch, but the screen is too small for me. Hopefully, Amazon is able to keep up with the demand.
I'm in the same boat but I can't order until the 25th. We'll be at WDW from the 16th to the 25th. Wish I could pre-order it but delay the delivery. I agree that I hope they have enough to keep up with the demand on both the Fire and the Touch because we're getting the Touch for my MIL for Christmas.

I haven't read that but I think if it's true, the SD card slot would solve that problem.

I'm going with the nook tablet for my 3 girls.

This may be a silly question, but does it have built in internet? We don't have internet at home, so I am wondering how I would get access to books and games if I don't have internet at home... :confused3

Amazon states "Ultra-fast web browsing - Amazon Silk", but I can't figure out what this is... Help!

You will not be able to use the Fire at home without a home network( router) or a portable mifi device. The Fire has Wi-Fi.

Ok, thanks. Here's another question:

Can't i just upload movies/games at a wi-fi spot like a coffee shop or work? I would like to get one of these for our road trips to store movies and things to do for my daughter.

TIA! :wizard:

I ordered it and am hoping I won't be disappointed. I would love an Ipad but they are so expensive. I hope this one lives up to all the hype. :)
Personal opinion: If you buy this product expecting to get an iPad, you're going to be disappointed. This is more of an iPad-Lite. Be sure you're realistic about this product's capabilities.
Please let me know what you think. I love to read and always wanted a Kindle, but never got one. DH thought they were too expensive and didn't understand why I couldn't just read a book a borrowed from the library. Now with the Kindle Fire he seems more open to the idea. I like the price point much more than the iPad. We are thinking about getting one but only after Christmas.
You're right that the library will always be cheaper (if the book you want is available), but I much prefer reading on my Kindle: You don't have to hold the pages "open", it saves your space when you stop reading, you can look up words instantly, you don't need a bookshelf on which to store your book, and it's so easy to carry it here and there.

Are you waiting 'til after Christmas 'cause you think they'll be cheaper? The new Kindle line is already budget-priced, and I wouldn't expect a better price for a year or more. If ever. I'd expect that as time goes on, Amazon'll add more features rather than lower the price.
As for DD11...I just can't buy a $500 iPad for someone her age. She constantly misplaced her DSi, etc. $200 is a very nice gift in our family, but could live with it if it was somehow permanently misplaced.
Sounds like the voice of reason. Several of the girls in my scout troop have Kindles, which they brought on our recent trip. They just weren't careful with them: Left them on the floor by their beds, even after warnings. One of them's already on her second Kindle. You know your kid. I'd lean towards waiting an extra year to make SURE the girl's ready for a fragile, expensive toy. My girls've always been pretty good about taking care of their things, but I wouldn't have bought them a Kindle before they were teens. If they'd been careless and broken them, I would've been inordinately upset, and I'd rather just avoid that. Now that they're 14 and 17, I'd absolutely buy them one . . . but neither one wants one this year. Their interests lie elsewhere right now.

I own a Kindle 2 and an iPad. When I got the iPad last Christmas, I thought I'd move all my Kindle books over PLUS have a Nook app . . . I thought the iPad'd become my one-stop favorite. Nope. My Kindle is sooooo much lighter, and when you read for hours at a time that matters!

With so many options available, it's smart to start by asking yourself WHY you want this product. If you want to read books, the plain old Kindle can't be beat, and the weight (or, lack of weight) is at the top of the "why this is #1" list.

This one would be for an older relative who wouldn't use it for anything but reading. She reads a lot, and I thought this might be something she would enjoy. She wouldn't be interested in checking email or surfing. It sounds like this might be a good option. Thanks! :)

It has USB - as long as you have a computer (doesn't have to have wifi, just internet) won't you be able to can connect the Fire to the computer and then transfer stuff to the kindle fire?

So let me see if I am clear on this Fire that I have preordered. :rotfl: It will still be an E ink reader like my current Kindle right? I was mainly going to use it for web browsing/email/games/magazines stuff like that. I love my kindle and the way it is easy on the eyes for reading books. I am assuming the Fire will be the same way??? :confused3

I don't think there's a color e-ink out in the market right now. That's what I really am interested in tho :)

Here's the info from amazon:
Kindle Fire Display: 7" multi-touch display with IPS (in-plane switching) technology and anti-reflective treatment, 1024 x 600 pixel resolution at 169 ppi, 16 million colors.
KF is more like a mini tablet, instead of an ereader.

The other Kindles do have e-ink display, but not KF.

Scroll down to the Compare Kindles area to see the differences.

My DH has asked for an Ereader for Christmas. Is the standard Kindle the way to go?

I love my kindle with the keyboard that I got last Oct. Since then they have come out with one or two others. I think "The Touch" and one that is cheaper like 79 bucks, but has advertisements on it or something. Just go to Amazon and you can read about them.

No - the new Kindle Fire will be a backlit tablet device, not an eink reader like all of the other Kindle products.

I preordered the Kindle Fire the day it was announced. Mine ships 11/15. I have a Kindle 2 now and love that. Or should I say DH has a Kindle 2 that he received for Christmas a couple of years ago he would like back. LOL

Is everyone aware that you can "rent" books from the library now for the kindle. My original Kindle does not support WiFi (it's 3G) so I need to download the book to my computer then drag it to the kindle. Takes about 30 seconds tops.

I don't know--reading about the Nook Tablet makes me think I might get that one instead. I don't like that the Fire does not have an SD slot, so you are limited to what you can download vs. bringing your own content. I know Amazon has their "cloud", but when you are away from Wi-fi, or the cloud is down you can't get to anything there, right? If it's on my SD card, I can always get to it. It sounds like the Tablet has a better screen, more RAM and memory. Not as many apps as the Fire, but they will come. I'm more interested in reading, email, web browsing, music and movies anyway.

I may just wait until a week after the launches and see what the masses think. It bugs me that neither B&N or Amazon has let anyone play with the devices to give a well-informed review on actual performance.
