Anyone Game? 2 Castles and a Road Trip TR! Last Day and TR Wrap Up! #2796; 10/01

Did you get a photo of the Przewalski foal? That would be the cutest thing ever!

When we were in Africa our guides were all very cautious of hippos. Apparently they are the most dangerous African animal. They are very aggressive and territorial, especially when there's a baby. The mother hippo will go off on her own to give birth and stay on her own for about a week after the birth before returning to the herd again. We were extremely lucky to see this newborn hippo on one of our morning drives. We had to stay far away and be pretty quiet. As it was the mother hippo didn't seem to mind us being there, but if there were any signs of distress we would have got out of there quick smart!

A baby hippo! :lovestruc.

I imagine a distressed momma hippo would definitely be a good reason to take a detour.

How small was the baby horse? The Przewalski already looked quite small.

The baby Przewalski was lying down, resting. It's between the two adults.

Primrose, with her mum. Apparently in the wild, there is close on an 80% baby mortality rate. A lot of the baby hippos get squashed to death by the other hippos, which is why the mothers get so protective.

There was also a baby Bison. Bison was on the endangered list at some stage and the zoos of the world started breeding them. Thankfully, there are now over 250K roaming about in the wild; especially around Yellowstone.

I think I need to start planning my Australia trip. How long do I need? 3 or 4 weeks? Or maybe I need to plan a working holiday and stay for a year. Hmmmm, now that is a good thought. :rolleyes1

It really depends on where you want to go and see. Australia is about as big as the US. What things are you interested in?

A working holiday would be perfect. :thumbsup2

You were super lucky to see mother and baby in the wild! That's a great shot. :thumbsup2

Thank you for the extra photos! 80% mortality rate? That's unbelievably sad :( not like elephants then, who I think protect the young ones as a herd.

I need to do lots of research on Australia but it has always been on my list to go to. I had looked into a work exchange program many years ago. It seemed quite a good program but they wanted you to have a specialty. That was before I had finished school so I didn't have anything to offer.

PIO!

Great additional shots! Especially the "lounging" hippos!

hehehehehee...

I'm finally all caught up. For some reason my ipad does not like your TR. It's taken me 3 days, and 5 crashes of my ipad to catch up :rotfl:

The Cali Grill Dismeet looks like it was a lot of fun, and the food looks delicious.

I have just added that zoo experience to my Aussie wishlist. I loved everything about the Animal Kingdom Lodge and the AK Safari ride, so I'm sure I would also love that zoo experience.
What a wonderful thing to do on your birthday. :)

The mama and baby hippo photo is unreal. :thumbsup2 You real safari beats ANY AK safari. The corrugated is all over Africa too (per Michael). Excellent photos, thanks for taking us along. :goodvibes

Seeing Oryx in the wild would be an amazing experience. Good for you! I think it's a different type of Oryx in Dubai and I hope to get there someday to see them in their natural environment.

Yes, they are the Arabian Oryx. They became extinct in the wild in 1972 and were reintroduced in Oman in 1982. There are now about 1000 animals in the wild with the biggest population on the Sir Bani Yas off the coast of Abu Dhabi.

We saw lots of baby animals while we were there - elephants, buffalo, giraffes, antelope, and even a zebra (that was super lucky because the zebras were supposed to have migrated by then). It was fantastic!

I love your photo of the hippo baby. And the Przewalski foal. I'd love to see it standing up though :goodvibes

When I read your comment about the baby hippos getting crushed, it suddenly made sense why the mother hippos leave the herd for a while. I guess they try to avoid it, but the babies are still pretty small and young when they go back.

How awesome!!!! Brand new just born?

Our guide estimated it was just a couple of days old :goodvibes

Thank you all so much for sharing your wildlife pictures and info You are definitely making my day :thumbsup2

Well.....let me know if you need any help on researching Australia. The ANZACs on the DisBoard are always happy to help you spend your money so you can always go there and get input from a few of us (rather than just me).

I hope you take another look at the work exchange program. That would be an awesome way to see this part of the world.

Dang! Sorry about my TR causing problems on your iPad. I really have been trying to make sure that I don't overload each edition with so many photos. :(

Keep in mind that there are 3 open range zoos in Australia. The one in Melbourne, the one in Dubbo (Western Plains) and there's one in Adelaide. I understand the one in Adelaide is a bigger.

Thanks Jenny. WORZ does have some sort of agreement with a community in Kenya where they buy jewellery that the local women make using beads. I suspect that they have styled part of the zoo to resemble that part of Kenya.

That's fantastic to have a species reintroduced back to their native habitat.

Conquering Everest

Conquering Everest. Because it's there.

That's the reason I make the pilgrimage through the temple.

And pay the appropriate respects to the Everest dieties.

In order to safely conquer this mountain, you need the proper safety equipment.

You also have to be prepared for the long trek ahead. There are many twists and turns.

The way up is very scenic.

And very steep.

We need to aim to visit the temples along the way.

They provide for brief respites from what is to come.

But we do have to accept that it is a long way to climb up.

We're nearly at the main peak now.

Getting closer. It's just around the corner.

Time for a break. It's the end of the line!

And then it's time to head backwards down.

Be careful of altitude sickness. You might end up hallucinating and think that there are Yeti in these mountains.

Round and round and down and down.

What a mountain!

So how many times did we get on this ride during EMH?

DH got on once. He ended up being incredibly queasy going backwards and sat it out.

DS and I got on again.

And again before DS called it quits.

Until Carsland opened, this ride was my absolute favourite Disney attraction. Second place is not a bad spot to be in when it comes to Everest.

Too Queasy to Eat

DS and I were starving. We hadn't yet had breakfast this morning. I figured Kusafiri Coffee Shop and Bakery might be the place for us this morning.

DH did check out the menu and firmly declared that his stomach wasn't feeling up to food. Poor DH. He was not having a good morning so far. We found him a spot to sit in the shade.

DS and I both got the Breakfast Wrap. It was edible but I won't be rushing back for a repeat.

We also decided to share a Danish. Cherry, of course. It was delicious but sadly on this trip, I was finding that my taste for sweet food was definitely slowing down.

DH did pick up a little whilst we were having breakfast. I think this was the first meal he'd skipped completely on this trip to date. He must have been feeling pretty bad.

All Washed Up and Wet; at Barely 10 am in the Morning

One of the things I hate doing when touring a park is doubling back. But double back is exactly what we did after breakfast.

There really was only one reason why I would have agreed to the backward trek.

It involved getting wet. And despite the fact that it was barely 9.30 am, it was a turning out to be a hot and humid day. We headed over to Kali Water Rapids.

It was still pretty empty at this time of morning and it was an easy loading on for us.

I played it safe with the camera gear. Just as well. I got soaked! And I wasn't the only one. Both DH and DS got incredibly wet as well.

A little quiet time was in order for us to dry out and take stock. First it was DH.....now it was DS. Everest and Kali did not seem to have hit the mark with my boys this morning.

I did have a few choice words with the dieties. I was not quite ready to head back to the resort yet and was hoping that both boys would pick up their game a little.

It was definitely a slow boat to nowhere this morning.

As we passed that tree again, I figured that if I wanted to stay a bit longer in this park, we needed a change of pace!

Both posts very nice ride "essays"!

Oh your poor guys :sad2: There's nothing worse than feeling sick when you're on holiday!

Hope they managed to perk up.

Dang! Sorry about my TR causing problems on your iPad. I really have been trying to make sure that I don't overload each edition with so many photos. :(

No need to apologise. The issue is with my iPad - it's being a real pain at present.

I never did get to try Kali River Rapids unfortunately. It was temporarily shut down the first time we tried and had a massive queue the second time. It will have to be one I save for next time.

I think EE was probably our overall family favourite since it features in all of our top 3. Such a fun ride - your pics of it are great.

Sorry to hear your family were unwell. I hope they perked up quickly.
