DisMeet #9: The Luck of the Irish
Did I mention that we were hoping for a lazy day today?
Ha! Ha!
In our original "lazy day" plans, we only had a DisMeet scheduled in for tonight. The only thing that I had planned for the day and naturally it revolved around food!
This day was always going to be the day where the Gamers were starting to arrive and congregate at WDW and we had spent a bit of time working out the DisMeet opportunities. And because of the common interest we shared, the DisMeet opportunities were always going to centre around food and the various dining establishments that we might want to eat at.
When comparing notes, there was one restaurant that both Alison and I wanted to eat at. So after settling into the room, we caught Disney Transport to Downtown Disney. You know.....DTD....that 'experiment' that Disney runs where entry to the complex is effectively free, no entry ticket required, and you have to "pay as you go" depending on the level of interaction you decide to have in the 'attractions'.
Anyone spot where we were eating yet?
The ADR was for 5.45 pm and when we checked in, we decided to request for an outside table.
Alison had originally booked a table for 6 on the assumption that the two of them, the 3 of us and Bobbiwoz would be joining us for dinner. However, when the Eat to the Beat concerts were announced, Air Supply was the drawcard this week and Bobbi decided she wanted to go see them.
Tempting as that Eat to the Beat concert was.....but I did not travel over 9000 miles to see an Australian band play at Epcot!
We did contemplate changing the booking back down to 5; but with all the bad experiences posted about the on-line system, we decided we would just tell them on arrival that we were a party of 5; not 6. However, it was a lucky happenstance that we hadn't changed that booking. It worked out just perfectly and we ended up being a party of 6 again on this night.
Goopysolelady had posted on the Gamer's planning thread when she knew she was definitely coming and mentioned her dates. It had been very quick work on Alison's part to put 2 and 2 together and let goopy know that she was welcomed to join us for dinner on this night.
I have to thank my DH for capturing this official DisMeet evidence. Seems like I didn't have a picture in my camera, neither did Alison! From left to right, Fran, Alison, myself and goopysolelady.
Raglan Road, Downtown Disney is a Disney-family appropriate establishment assuming parental supervision where Al.K.Hole was concerned.
I understand that the bars and furniture was all made in Ireland and then imported here. It's definitely an Irish pub-feel inside.
The floor show of River Dancing was superb.
Both DH and I were drawn inside by the infectious music to take a look.
It was enough to put us on a high for the night.
We had chosen to sit outside because we were seeking a more quiet experience. How ironic that we ended up right next to the band.
At least, they were a great band playing folk music!
But I do wonder if Disney did research the name sufficiently when they were looking at possible names for this establishment.
Raglan Road in Dublin was the inspiration of a poem written by Patrick Kavanagh in 1946. Originally titled Dark Haired Miriam Ran Away, the poem tells the sad tale of the speaker in love with a young woman 'walking' a quiet street. It's effectively a love story doomed to failure. It was later set to a traditional Irish melody by Luke Kelly of the Dubliners and is regarded as one of those 'immortalised songs' for Luke Kelly.
What does this have to do with dinner tonight, you ask?
Absolutely nothing. The sadness of the tale and poignancy of the music is as far away as possible from the food and happy, noisy place we were to enjoy tonight but I just figured you might want to know what the history of Raglan Road was.
However, believe it or not, there is a long-bow Disney connection to Raglan Road. There is a stanza in the poem that makes reference to the Queen of Hearts.
The Queen of Hearts still making tarts and I not making hay -
O I loved too much and by such and such is happiness thrown away.
If you read those lines, keep in mind that we are talking about a streetwalker here! It definitely isn't Disney-family appropriate!
