Anyone Game? 2 Castles and a Road Trip TR! Last Day and TR Wrap Up! #2796; 10/01

I've always admired the length of flying time you and other world travelers go to to get to DLR & WDW I don't know if I could do it I also laugh at the complaining that we do in this country how long it takes to get to either by car or plane

Me I HATE to fly, I will have to really gear myself up for it the next time I go to NY or if I ever get to CA ( I was there once when I was a teen, never made it to DLR, but it was a road trip to stick our toes in the pacific ocean..that's the only goal we had...we were young and carefree )

I haven't commented in a LONG time but trust me PIO you have been my late night reading at work/on breaks I am all caught up with you

What perfect timing flying into Orlando during the Fireworks. That will be one plane landing you never forget.

Following along....you have made it to Florida! :cool1:

I know by this time (meaning your arrival at the airport), I was safely tucked in bed with visions of Mickey Ice Cream bars dancing in my head! :)

I will be the first to admit I feel very lucky that we have the ability to take a Southwest direct flight to Orlando, WHEN we can manage it. 2.5 hours from our airport to MCO is awesome.

However, when do to cost and/or timing we can no longer fly direct, and it becomes 5, 6 or 7 hours...then I am not such a happy camper. I do also miss the days of sub-$200 RT air fares to Florida. The "long weekend" seems to be a thing of the past.

And then especially when we fly to LA out of Buffalo, and we have to make two stops, making the flight 9-10 hours - YUK! :crazy2:

BUT, still hands down you have it the worst, not just in time but in COST. I think I would be much more likely to consider another trip to Australia in the next few years, if it didn't cost $1,500+ per ticket, length of flight be damned. I find COST a much bigger deterrant than length of flight.

It's the same thing with DLR vs WDW. I don't consider length of flight. I think it costs us $750 to get to Florida, and $1500 to get to California, I'm picking Florida most every time.

Those hot springs sound amazing! Never even thought about the healing properties that could come from it. I've had pretty bad tendonitis in my hands for 9 years (i'm sure it will turn to arthritis very soon here) and those waters sound so relaxing. Even DH would benefit too! He has really bad knees so this would be marvelous.

If I see ahi tuna on any menu, I MUST order it. Delicious!

For a sec, I thought you were going to be driving too :rotfl: I'm always saying, "I wish I lived closer to WDW", even though it's only a 5 hour flight from California. Now i'm never saying it again knowing how long it takes you from Australia:scared1::faint:

Great updates - as usual!

Excited to read about your time at Disney World :wizard:

Nice to hear that nothing went wrong during your flight to DFW and to MCO. That would have been so neat to get some pictures of HalloWishes during your flight. If I go back to WDW one day and it is late at night and the fireworks, Illuminations or F! are playing at night, I will have to get my camera out just in case for something like that would happen. Every time I get to MCO, I do enjoy riding the tram to the main terminal from the gates.

I'm looking forward to reading your next update.

I had the window seat, for a change. And I was torn between getting DH to get up to get the camera or to let him lean over and check out the fireworks as well. In the end, we just looked out the window and just enjoyed it.

That really puts things into perspective. This is about as long as it takes us when we fly indirect from the UK. If we have a non-stop flight, it is less than that. I am glad that everything went smoothly. That must have been such a treat to see the fireworks from the plane.

Corinna

We were all pretty excited to see the fireworks.

Yup. I was surprised at how long it did end up taking door to door to get to WDW from somewhere in the middle of the country.

OOoooo! I thought you were going to drive!

But then again, that 13 hours... I think you might have taken a few months on that...

:)

Jud

Two months? Yes. I think you might be right with that estimate. :lmao:

It actually takes close to 29 hours to drive to Orlando. :) unless you have a rental capable of Mach 1! It takes me 9 hours to drive from Denver to Kansas City.

Gotta love those small airports....I was surprised you didn't have to route through Denver but flying AA it makes sense to go through DfW.

Glad you finally made it to Orlando!

Jill in CO

I must have looked at the time it took to drive to Dallas when I was looking to have 13 hours on my brain.

Frontier, United and American fly out of Durango La Plata. I checked out all the options on the Sunday and the American route (via DFW) and the United route (via Denver) were the ones that provided me with the most options. Sadly, United got me there later in the evening and it was also more expensive that the American flight. I would have liked to have gotten a quick view of Denver; even from the airport. Next time.

Hmm 11-12 hours is still less time than it takes us just to get to LA... from the east coast ;)

Still bad enough though to be a deterrent to taking frequent trips there.

What a nice welcome seeing the fireworks on arrival :goodvibes

Yes. The door to door time definitely caught me by surprise when I was planning it out. I looked at driving to Albuquerque and spending some time there and then flying out of there to MCO. Problem was that it meant cutting short our time with DH's cousins. And we didn't really want to do that.

That was certainly a full day if traveling, glad it was smooth though. It amazes me how gross and rude some people leave toilets....

Pam - The DFW restrooms was a very rude shock for me. It was gross and the only time I've seen a restroom in worst condition was the one I HAD to visit in Detroit.

Being from a small Island I am amazed by the distances people drive and travel to get to WDW! On thing that really drops my jaw is that folks say it's cheaper to drive from NY to WDW than to get a plane. Because fuel is so expensive here in the UK that isn't true for us. For us to drive from South to Scotland it would probably be quicker and cheaper to fly.

Glad you arrived how cool re fireworks! Did the person serving at the cafe at the regional airport then pilot the plane lol...

I think that our price of petrol is about on par with yours. The US is still significantly cheaper compared to Australian pricing. But I've noticed that petrol in the US has gone up in price a lot.

The person serving at the cafe? I wondered if it was the person who normally would man the Hertz booth. :rotfl:

Interesting muses with travel interchanges and the time it takes does make you think. Granada airport was a bit like your first one. I have kicked myself ever since I didn't take any pics to show - cute though. You arrived and saw fireworks...yaay!

If I'm ever at Granada airport, I'll take a picture for you. ;)

Thanks.

I for some reason thought you were going to drive when I saw the 2000 miles to Orlando, then the travel by air, glad everything worked out for you, and I like the smaller airports for some things, just easier to get in and out of, but not much on convenience.

Love that you got to see the fireworks.

I totally agree.

In total, we drove over 1400 miles in the 10 days of the road trip. I think the 2000 miles more to Orlando would have taken us AGES to get there.

:rotfl:

Okay, so you've finally lured me out of lurkdom. I've been reading along since the beginning and never take the time to comment. My sister used to live in the Durango area and I've been lucky enough to see quite a few of the sites that you posted about. After reading along and seeing your pictures, I feel the need to go back and visit the area again. It's been over 25 years since we've done so. Your pictures are absolutely breathtaking!

When you said that it took 13 hours to drive to Disney, I thought "there's no way!" It takes us 13 to 15 to drive from North Louisiana so I knew there was no way it could take just 13 hours from Pagosa. Probably more like 30. :faint:

The airport in Durango reminds me of our local airport. Just two gates (one was recently added with the remodel) and you simply walk out to your plane. Yep, it's a little airport. If we want to fly to Disney, we have to drive to another airport that's about 2 1/2 hour away and then fly to Disney. The airfare is outrageous though so we just drive. Thank goodness we like road trips.;)

sgreeting_welcome_sign_general_100-109.gif

Welcome to the TR! Thanks for de-lurking and thank you so much for reading along.

Yes - I think I must have looked at driving time to Dallas instead of Orlando and gotten muddled up. I don't think I would have contemplated putting in another 2000 miles to the road trip....not the way we were being diverted by brown signs.

Durango looked really interesting and I wished I had planned an overnight stay there before getting to Pagosa. Next time.

I was amazed at the price of flights out of little airports. I guess it is a captive market and the airlines can charge a little more.

Thanks.

I've always admired the length of flying time you and other world travelers go to to get to DLR & WDW I don't know if I could do it I also laugh at the complaining that we do in this country how long it takes to get to either by car or plane

Ruthie - One of these days, you need to get on a plane and come visit me. :thumbsup2

Thanks for reading along. Hope that work has been kind to you.

Nearly at more DisMeet time....:thumbsup2

What perfect timing flying into Orlando during the Fireworks. That will be one plane landing you never forget.

It was great timing; and it was lucky that I was sitting at the right side of the plane as well. Yes, I'll remember that flight over MK for a long time.

Following along....you have made it to Florida! :cool1:

I know by this time (meaning your arrival at the airport), I was safely tucked in bed with visions of Mickey Ice Cream bars dancing in my head! :)

It's going to be interesting to play "where was franandaj" as I update the WDW section of this TR. ::yes::

Pete - That long haul airfare is a killer. But I guess we Aussies know that we live on an island continent and that means we have to pay for a long haul flight no matter which direction we fly.

The alternative is to stay home and holiday at home. When I look at the price of internal flights and 'local' holidays.....the overseas ones become really attractive in comparison.

I definitely have location envy, Alicia. YOU live pretty close to DLR.
:rotfl:

That Ahi Tuna was quite delicious. If you like it, then I think you would have loved this plate of food.

Do you have hot springs near you?

Great updates - as usual!

Excited to read about your time at Disney World :wizard:

Thanks maryr1. I hope the WDW updates end up being entertaining for everyone to read.

We Start with an Express Magical Experience

After we picked up our checked bags, we headed over to the Disney section of MCO.

You may remember way back on Groundhog Day 1 that I picked up this box from franandaj (DisMeet #1).

Magic Bands, the Fast Pass Plus system and the new My Disney Experience IT/app has been the subject of much debate on the Dis for the last year or so. Nothing I can say will change the viewpoint of Dis-sers about how inconsistent this new Disney system can be. I don't aim to try. I can only report on my experience with it and add my '2-bits worth' to the near universal viewpoint of an inconsistent experience and implementation to date through this TR.
Whether we like it or not, the MB, FP+ and MDE is probably here to stay. Disney Corp has probably invested way too much in its development to roll back. And I'll just roll with the bands and the system the way it's laid out for me during the period of my vacation.

As with everyone else, I'd come to this point having gone through My Disney Experience (MDE) and linking my park tickets (which I bought via Undercover Tourist) to all my ADRs and eventually picking my FP+ rides. All this happened before the current ride tiering system was implemented. It remained to be seen if the system would hold all that information and keep it active without issue for this trip. I had the standard gripes about using MDE and the occasionally bad useability of that website; but by and large, I would say that pre-arrival, the only major concern I had was the amount on planning I was now forced to do for Walt Disney World. It's bad enough that I have to plan my restaurants and meals 6 months out; and formulate my park days 3 months out. Now I also have to choose my rides and schedule the heck out of my day. It sure takes the fun and spontaneity out of my Disney World holiday. But let's get on with this TR, shall we?

As an international tourist to Disney, I had been lucky to have a set of bands with me. Disney policy is to ship the bands to a local US address or for pick up at the resort on arrival. On any given holiday, I would have expected to have the set waiting for me at the resort. But we had a split booking for this trip and because of that, I ended up having a second set of bands that were shipped to Alison (she owned the second reservation).

I had remembered to pack the second set of Magic Bands I'd gotten first way back on day 1 of this vacation in my carry-on bag. For what it's worth, there were no issues with the RFID bands going through airport security. Neither Durango La Plata nor Dallas Fort Worth security stopped to check what they were at any point in the day. As the bands are based on RFID technology, I chose not to link any credit card details with the bands.

As I approached the Front Desk for Magical Express, I noticed the MB scanners right near where you would get into the queues for the various resort buses. DH was surprised and more than a little confused when I headed straight there and by-passed the Front Desk.

The Mickey head turned green for me. It was our first time experiencing the light up Green Mickey Head on this trip. And the experience was not just about seeing the green light! The CMs behind the scanner checks the screen and greets all three of us by name, knows exactly what resort we're staying at and directs us through to the right bus queue. So fast did all this occur and so quick was the CM at shepherding us through the queue that I didn't have a chance to take a picture of the ME Front Desk like I normally like to do. It was definitely the most express check-in I've had at the ME 'desk'.

Our Disney's Magical Express was waiting for us.

We were all smiles boarding our chariot.

I snagged the seats right at the front of the bus. By-passing the Front Desk had given us that head start and we were first on. So far, the MB experience was working out great. We waited a few more minutes for our ride queue competition to board the bus as well.

DH and DS were really curious about the bands and despite the fact that I had tried to tell them all about it before we left Australia, I pretty much repeated the same information to them on the bus. As before, I lost them at "new gate entry and ticketing system". I figured now that we were here, it would probably take them 2 hours in the morning tomorrow to understand. In the meantime, DS and I admired the pretty colours.

Despite snagging the prime spot on the bus, I didn't figure on my first view of Disney property being turned off. I sure hope that it wasn't a sign of how the MB experience was going to keep us in the dark for the duration of this trip!

ME made a couple of stops to drop off some of the other guests at their homes.

Whilst I was chaffing to get to our resort and room, I was happy to have a Pop-by look at the other resorts.

Soon enough, we got to our Home.

(Continued from Previous Post)

Checking In and Checking Out our Home

I always enjoy the check-in process at the Beach Club. I've never quite worked out how but the CM all seem to know my name even before I get off ME.

I guess it becomes easier for the CMs with the MBs. Afterall, it is a virtual GPS tagging and tracking system of where I am at any time on Disney property.

As there were only 3 parties getting off ME, it is probably easier to work out who is who for the CM, magic band or not. It came as no surprise that the doorman greeted me with the standard Welcome Home by my name. It always gives me a thrill and I feel like such a 'regular' whenever they do that.

At this time of night, check-in was a breeze; all my paperwork was waiting for me, including a set of fully functioning Keys to the World. The only hold-up was the CM asking me for my credit card to link to the MB/KttW. And whilst I was dealing with the formalities of saying 'no thanks' in person, DS was making himself at home.

I've always loved these chairs in the lobby of the BC. Sadly, they look far more inviting than they are to sit in.

Our room was on the second floor; meaning that it was on the floor above ground level.

DS was going to be sleeping on the sofa couch. It's actually one of the more comfortable sofa beds we’ve ever come across in our travels.

Our studio room was plenty big for the 3 of us; given that we didn't plan on doing much more than sleeping in here.

The décor hadn't changed at all since the last time I stayed at the BCV in 2010.

Whilst everything was perfectly acceptable....

....and clean enough,

I think it’s definitely time for a refurb. It's certainly looking it's age! Just as well Disney agree. A refurb is planned for the Beach Club for 2014.

We unpacked and all got into bed. Tomorrow was an eagerly anticipated day!

One last thing before we close out this day and get ready for the big day ahead of us. This set of MB was also waiting for me at reception.

For those curious and remember the discussion from the PTR, my first choice of MB colour was pink. The red that I was sporting was the second colour that I chose. I am not usually a pink sort of gal; my preference is purple, but it was such a happy shade of pink that I was attracted enough to it to make it my first choice.

This second set of MB? They are still in pristine condition in the box; somewhere in my house. I never used them during the trip and they remain a trip souvenir, gathering dust.

Glad to see the bands worked for the busses. If our trip goes off, my parents and brother will be using them and I'm concerned about them getting confused if they have a problem.

YAY!!! So glad you're finally "here"! :cheer2: What a long travel day; I never enjoy flying through regional airports (fortunately it's not something I have to do for getting to MCO!).

Love your front seat on the bus -- but what the heck was up with the sign??!! The horror..... How un-Disney! :rotfl:

.

That's great your bands worked on the ME! We didn't get to do this as we had no US shipping address! I like the pink band as well. Looking forward to hearing about your experience of using them! I know a lot of negative reports here but we were never able to us FP as I could never be there for RD so we loved it!

Nice to hear that your MB worked for you when you got to MCO that night. It was very nice to get the bands before you got to the Beach Club when you picked them you were with Alison in SoCal. It is always great to have a second pair of souvenirs of MB when you got them at the resort. The Beach Club Resort looks very nice.

great day to arrive and get through all of the band business without any hickups!

I'm so glad that you made there safely! I'm sorry that you had to change rooms mid-stay.

I can't believe that they have to send so many of the MBs, it just seems so wasteful. I hope that they can fix that part of the equation eventually. Looking forward to hearing about your day Monday (even though I heard about the highlights from you and the surprise guest for dinner on Wednesday!) But I won't spoil it!

I am glad that the Magic Bands worked for you and made the check in for Magical Express such a quick and smooth experience. I was really surprised when they welcomed us by name when we arrived. I actually love sitting on those "thrones".

Corinna

We Start with an Express Magical Experience
The Mickey head turned green for me. It was our first time experiencing the light up Green Mickey Head on this trip.

Whatever one thinks about MB's and FP+ etc, that still must have felt pretty neat.

PS: Nice pictorial on the ME experience. I have never seen it and that gave me a much better feel for it. Thanks!

:)

Jud

You know, there is a hot springs about 2 1/2 hours from here, but the reviews are terrible so we've never gone.

Wow such an easy check-in for you guys at the airport and at the resort! Score:thumbsup2

Hmm, do you happen to know if this refurb will continue into 2015? We were actually considering staying at the BCV in January if VGF falls through..

I hate deer. They are everywhere here and I fear hitting one with a car. They do so much damage. Pretty to look at in pics though.
What a lovely town. Love the water and scenery.
I would love to soak in the springs.
What a cute area to have dinner. The Ahi looked good.
Desserts looked good. I would have chosen the apple cobbler. Yum. Love them. LOL.
I wish I lived closer to WDW only because of the funds needed to go for airfare. Time wise is no issue being it is a 2 ½ hour flight for me.
YIKES! Your travel time is insane.
First airport looked nice. I love small airports.
2nd not so much. I deal with NYC airports and hate them so I can imagine Dallas-Ft. Worth would not be a favorite.
3rd airport, love. LOl. Okay really I don’t when coming home being I hate their security line but love it when we land.
Lucky you seeing the fireworks from MK on the airplane. I have never seen WDW when landing or taking off and I look all the time.
I thought after 10pm you had to get the luggage as Disney doesn’t do it after 10.
Glad the bands worked at the DME.
Nice “home” to be checking into.
Nice room.
My 2nd set is also collecting dust. Such a waste of money.
Great updates and pics.
