Anyone Game? 2 Castles and a Road Trip TR! Last Day and TR Wrap Up! #2796; 10/01

I caught back up on your last update on Friday and I got to read your latest one today.

Treasure Falls looks very nice and I did enjoy your pictures. The chipmunk picture was very nice and glad that you were able to get a picture. The Bison Burger looks very appetizing.

The museum with the quilts are very nice to look at. The treats look very appetizing but the cherry pie look very good to eat. Very nice update.

Our Ralph's even has bison, but I've never gone for it. Only because we are in moving mode and not culinary mode. Once we get into the new house, we'll have to try some bison burgers!

The Falls pictures were beautiful

I just realized as I posted that I'm a whole update behind! But I realized since we are planning trips through 2017, we need to get a trip down under in the mix. When would you recommend that we come to visit? Obviously not this time of year as you are experiencing some awfully hot temps. When do you think would be a good time of year for us to schedule a visit? We will start planning soon!

I was lucky enough to score bison in Breckenridge skiing one time. Hard to go back to normal burger after that!

How interesting re the Arborglyphs. I just love anything that has a glyph in it! Seek it out on vacation. I would love to visit the pyramids but with my health condition my consultant says no due to the hygiene :-( but I could settle for these!

Oh what a nice surprise that shiny Harley. One of the things I look forward to about going to the States is seeing Harley's. Yes I am a big fan!

Oh yum re cherry pie. Plenty of filling I hope. I was so disappointed that EPCOT F & W America did not have more pie! I mean come on! That's like having Scotland and not having real meat Haggis. Oh no wait they didn't lol...

I love American pie!

Mmmmm that cherry pie looks good. As does the Bison burger.

Is it bad that the 2 things I pull from your latest posts are food related? :rotfl:

That is exactly how I've made regular homemade fries so assumed it would work on the sweets. Good to know!

Bummer on the rain but what a nice use of the day. I really like the butterfly quilt but have issues with cherry pie (very un-american of me I know). Since I jumped in on oh, page 75 or so, what is the coffee issue?

What a shame that the weather had turned. The museum is what we lovingly refer to as an attic in the UK: a lot of different exhibits that have nothing in common squeezed into a small space. I loved the quilts though.

The tree carvings are really neat and the cherry pie looks yummy.

Another great couple of days. Glad you got to see more mountain glow, and that you were able to take advantage of the rainy day. It's always wise to have indoor plans as a back up :thumbsup2

Pagosa Springs, looks like a lovely place.

We did cross the divide back in August when we were in Colorado, and I kept thinking, "How did they get up here through the brush and landscape and create this road." there was a first person!

The bison looks wonderful, we also had Bison while we were in CO, and loved it, I wish I could get more here and at the prices we were getting it there in CO.

The quilts were lovely, reminds me of my grandmother, she made one or two every year!

The pie looks yummy, I could go for a piece right now!

As I was reading along, I kept thinking that the DIS ate another one of my posts, but now I see that it showed up after your update. I'm now all caught up again.

Nice use of a rainy day so far. I'm jealous, we need one of those here badly. The museum looked cute, all those interesting old items.

I guess I'm unamerican too, I'm not a fan of cherry pie. Apple, strawberry, pumpkin....just not cherry. What was the person doing out riding their Harley in the rain?

Interesting about the arborglyphs...looking forward to the rest of the day. Oh yeah love the sign about the unattended kids!

Love the stuff in the museum as it reminds me of my mom and all the stuff she use to collect and sale. I so appreciate the work that goes into those quilts as DH's grandmothers and a close friend of my mom's made many quilts for us.

That Chuck Wagon Quilt looks amazing!

Had to giggle at your DS and my DH does that every once in a while and I laugh at him! Guess it never leaves the system entirely.

That Cherry pie looks delicious! I love anything with cherries. In fact, a couple of days ago I made Cherry Kuchen bars and they were fabulous!

Great pics! :thumbsup2

Thank you.

I never knew about the tree carvings! Very cool!

I love the quilts. My mom is a quilter (and I dabble) and have been to more quilt shows and shops to count. Those quilts are display were really nice...I love the 30's era quilts!

Mmmm, that bakery looks delicious!

Jill in CO

Glad to have shared the tree carvings!

Seems like there are a few Dis-sers that are quilters. I've just gotten in the habit of taking pictures of quilts whenever I see them to share.

I loved the bakery. The display wasn't extensive; but it was a nice place to come and grab bread, pastries and a snack. A lot of locals came in and the people behind the counter seemed to be on first name basis with everyone. It is about the only bakery in the small town. Limited choice, I guess.

Thanks Bret. I really liked Treasure Falls and wished I had more time there. Next time.

Cherry pie was delicious.

Where are you planning on visiting? March is my favourite time in Melbourne. The real heat is over but the days are still warm, nights are cool and crisp and there are lots of festivals to enjoy.

But it's not necessarily the best time for Queensland as it can still be warm and humid there. It'll be about the same as hitting Florida in Sep/Oct.

The other time is springtime; October/November. It might be a better time for Queensland and not too bad for Melbourne. However, if you suffer from hayfever, it can be a killer time of year to visit.

If you want to visit Uluru (Ayer's Rock), then August/Sep is the best time to hit the red centre. It's not too hot and if there has been rainfall, then it could have some great wildflowers to see.

September is also a great time to see wildflowers in Western Australia.

Hmmm.....I seem to be talking you into September. But if you suffer from hayfever, then come in March.

I was lucky enough to score bison in Breckenridge skiing one time. Hard to go back to normal burger after that!

I don't have a choice. No bison burger here. :worried:

How interesting re the Arborglyphs. I just love anything that has a glyph in it! Seek it out on vacation. I would love to visit the pyramids but with my health condition my consultant says no due to the hygiene :-( but I could settle for these!

I assume you mean the pyramids in Egypt.

Have you see the Mayan pyramids? Chichen Itza in the Yucatan Peninsula is worth considering if you haven't been there. It's a day trip from Cancun.

Oh what a nice surprise that shiny Harley. One of the things I look forward to about going to the States is seeing Harley's. Yes I am a big fan!

I couldn't believe my luck when I saw it was out there. :thumbsup2

Oh yum re cherry pie. Plenty of filling I hope. I was so disappointed that EPCOT F & W America did not have more pie! I mean come on! That's like having Scotland and not having real meat Haggis. Oh no wait they didn't lol...

Heaps of filling. YUM!

No Haggis at Scotland??? That's like no Vegemite at Australia. :rotfl:

Mmmmm that cherry pie looks good. As does the Bison burger.

Is it bad that the 2 things I pull from your latest posts are food related? :rotfl:

Yes and no. :duck:

No - because both those items were absolutely delicious.

Yes - I would have thought that all that mountain greenery and waterfall would have appealed to you more. :rotfl:

Issues with cherry pie? Why? And no, I don't think it's un-american; unless you have issue with apple pie as well. :rolleyes1

I live in Melbourne. It's a city that takes its coffee consumption very seriously. Very. seriously.
We have coffee shops that roast their own beans (Arabica, of course; not Robusta) on site so that we, the serious coffee consumers, have the freshest roast available.
And then there is the entire science behind how to extract the coffee out of the bean. (Serious. science.)
Cold extract, percolated, pressure extraction, press.....using machines, using gravity, using steam......the exact pressure and water temperature to extract the coffee. (University. level. chemistry. equipment.)
And then the crema on top. (Mysterious. science!)
Then the temperature that you heat milk up; and how much froth to add depending on the style of coffee. (A. complete. science. in. it's. own. right.)

Ah Yes. We take our coffee consumption very seriously. ;) Then we go to the US. Nescrape.

I posted about the not-coffee in an early post. Seems like the Brits on this thread also know what I mean. :rotfl2:

After all that heat, sunshine and blue sky, it was nice to see the rain.

Yes. You've hit the nail on the head. Attic is the perfect description for that museum. :thumbsup2

I'm really glad that we got the rain when we were in Pagosa. Can you imagine if we had that rain out in Arizona? All those outdoor excursions and hikes that I wouldn't have been able to fully enjoy. YIKES!

Which road did you use to cross the Continental Divide?
Is bison expensive? I really didn't get a chance to ask Y about the cost.

Do you have any quilts from your grandmother? I always think that's a nice thing to have as a memory of the women in the family.

If it weren't for the rain, I don't think we would have gone to the museum. But that's the way it falls when on the road, right? Who knows what the weather will do....and then you just deal with it and do stuff that is appropriate.

I don't know what that person was doing riding the Harley in the rain. And it was cold as well. Really cold!

Love the stuff in the museum as it reminds me of my mom and all the stuff she use to collect and sale. I so appreciate the work that goes into those quilts as DH's grandmothers and a close friend of my mom's made many quilts for us.

Seems like a few of us on this thread like looking at quilts!

That Chuck Wagon Quilt looks amazing!

That Cherry pie looks delicious! I love anything with cherries. In fact, a couple of days ago I made Cherry Kuchen bars and they were fabulous!

Nooooooo! Say it isn't so. *sigh* I'm just going to have to seek forgiveness from DS' future partner.

:rotfl2:

I love anything Cherry as well. Do you have a recipe for the Cherry Kuchen?

We used the same road as you... We were in South Fork, Co and drove to Durango, CO along 160 through Pagosa Springs, Co.

We were there in August!

I do not have any of those quilts.. My mother kept everything from me, and now she is dead to, so i have nothing from my childhood.... Making my own memories now :)

we also went to Lake City in Co, which took us across the divide again on route 149 we went through Spring Creek Pass and Slumgullion Pass

I always seem to be playing catch up. Darn work getting in the way of my DIS time!

Treasure Falls looks beautiful! I would have climbed the rest of the way up with you!

The chipmunks made me laugh because I usually don't get to see them alive. My dogs love to catch them and then bring the bodies to me for some praise.

Those quilts were beautiful! I have a couple of beautiful Amish made quilts that are tucked away in my closet. I can't really use them with the four dogs or they would get ruined.

The tree carvings looked really interesting, I had never heard of that before.

So you went the other way on the 160. That would have been your surprise trip for your dad, right?

I'll have to google that route 149 and see the pics. They aren't showing up for me.

Sorry about your mom. Why do some parents do that to their kids?

Thanks Ariana. I hope that work isn't too stressful. It gets in the way of my Distime too. :(

We have possums in Australia, not squirrels nor chipmunks. My cats have been known to bring home dead possums.

I'd love to see the Amish quilts. They would be spectacular!

Downtown Pagosa Springs

The day had started out cold and wet; and if anything, when we came out of the bakery, it just kept getting colder. Those grey clouds just hung around Pagosa and mizzle just kept falling for the rest of the day. It was just as well that we had the town of Pagosa to take a look at and spend a slow day in.

Opposite the bakery, we saw these shops.

Given that we'd just eaten and I'm not much into fly fishing, we passed on these shops. But this one got our attention!

Yeah. DH was across the street in a flash and into that shop before me. Go figure!

No photography allowed; but there were a number of gorgeous handcrafted items in there. Pottery, furniture, wooden plates and home knick-knacks. DH and I loved this shop.

We then headed down to the main section of Pagosa.

My DH can be quite a shopper when he puts his mind to it. He'd come prepared for this road trip and had already mined enough silver to keep us in clover for a while. Now, he was after hide....leather, of course. Boots. And not just any type of boots....Cowboy boots and Indian moccasins. Yup. Some boys just never outgrow the Cowboys and Indians phase.

X and Y told us that there was one Departmental Store in town. Goodman's.

I guess it would be considered a departmental store for a town the size of Pagosa. Surprisingly, there was merchandise crammed in everywhere and a large-ish range of boots and mocs. So, whilst DH was trying out every style in the store, I took a walk down the rest of the shops. We did spend a couple of hours or three in this stretch of Pagosa.

I learnt something about myself today. I love small towns, love being in them, love the treechange or seachange lifestyle it promises. I do not love the shopping options it does not offer.

Money and DH parted company. Money and me. Did. Not.

Pizza Lunch

With all the American diner-style cuisine available to us in downtown Pagosa, trust my DS to ask for the moon. In this case, a moon in the shape of a pizza. Believe me. I walked the pavement in the rain into every open eating establishment in downtown Pagosa in search of the moon. No pizza available for lunch. In the end, the Mexican place took pity on me and advised where I could possibly find a pizza joint.

We had to head 5 minutes down the 160 to the west side of Pagosa to find a pizza place open for lunch.

The ambience was quaint.

The twinkling lights and beach theme was so out of place on a wet, cold day. But it was warmer inside.

And they did serve pizza.

I opted to go with a Mediterranean sub. Olives, peppers, feta, onions, spinach and cheese. It was delicious!

DH ordered salad. Too cold for me today!

We were all happy with our orders.

We were obliged to stay here longer than we had wanted. There had been a problem with their cash register and we couldn't pay until they fixed it. Not that we were complaining. It was cold outside and it gave me time to enjoy the details in here.

We eventually did leave. It was so cold that I ended up having to stop in one of the shops in Pagosa to get a windcheater after lunch. And if you're wondering, the temperature gauge in Pagosa hit the giddy heights of 38 F (3 – 4 C) today.

I was going to need the extra layer at our next destination for this day.
