Since DH found out he made the E-8 list, he has been getting offers to move all over.
Originally we were supposed to be going to Brooklyn NY, where he would be taking over the Army Medical Recruiting Office there.

With this impending promotion, that has been nixed.
He has been offered positions in Albany, Boston, somewhere in New England, West Virginia, Harrisburg PA, Baltimore, and Louisville KY.

The ones we are thinking about are Harrisburg (we know the area since we were stationed there for six years), Baltimore, and Louisville.

I have been looking for info on Louisville online, but it is giving me a headache trying to read and sort through pertinent info.

can anyone clue me in?

Is it a nice area?
Family friendly?
How is the weather?
How are the schools? This is very important to me as DS is ADHD/Bipolar and we have had major issues with the school district here.
Are there lots of activities for kids and families to do?
What are the homes like? (I am looking at realtor sites right now)
Cost of living?

Anything else I am forgetting, please feel free to throw in! I can use all the help I can get.

We are trying to sort through and make a decision that is best for the entire family ASAP. We want to be moved before summer's end, as we don't want to pull both kids out of school. (Of course that would be ideal, but ultimately it rests in the hands of the Army!)

Thanks.

You may want to PM Poohlovr. I'm pretty sure she is from there.

I was born and raised in the Louisville area, but I have not lived there for over 25 years now . . .

We were at Ft Knox for a short time and I am thinking that Louisville is a bit of a commute from there, so I wasn't sure if he was going to Ft Knox or Louisville? The area itself is quite nice, I liked it because there were a lot of fun areas to visit but I liked the history sites and things such as Mammoth caves. There is a nice zoo and Science Center in Louisville (or there was when we were there). Good shopping. The weather was hot and humid in the summer months but I thought it was pleasant in fall and spring as it seemed warmer to me but I am from the northwest. The hills are very beautiful in the fall. The winters, well we had a few bad snow days but otherwise not to bad. But we were only there six or seven months. I liked the base, but don't have any prior base experience to base it on. We lived in Radcliffe though, will you qualify for base housing? It seemed nice to me. The PX and Base stores had a lot of variety. HOpe this helps although it has been awhile since I was there.

Born and raised in the Louisville area. Fort Knox is a little bit of a communte from Louisville. But it's a great town and there is lots to do. In my opinon a great place to raise a family. The housing market is booming and the rates are about average nationally. Schools are wonderful, if your looking at private they will put a dent in your wallet but you can't go wrong with some of the private schools. The public schools are better than other large city schools and there is a lot of community involvment with the schools. The weather here is weird because we're not to far north but not to far south either. We have the ocasional snow storm but the winters aren't bad. The summers are long and hot, very humid, and plenty of mosquitoes. But all in all it's not much different than anywhere else. The Kentucky Derby is this weekend and thats some of the best times to be in the area. Hope you check us out and move to our little big town. Any questions just ask.

Thank you for the replies.
Waiting to find out where we are going is just killing us!

No matter where we go we won't be living on base. Won't do that again. Bad experience.....

Louisville area sounds like a great place to live, and I have found some great info online as well.

Thanks again.

Yep, Poohlovr is from Louisville, as is her DD Shellie722. I'll alert them to your post :)

Louisville is probably about 40 minutes from Ft. Knox itself, not too bad really. The cost of living here is pretty reasonable, definitely lower than alot of areas. The schools are good- both public and private- w/ many special programs depending on the needs and interests of the student. There is alot to do in this area as well as w/ in a short drive of here. There are some beutiful state and national parks here such as Mammoth Cave National Park which is wonderful. There is a Six Flags in Louisville as well as Churchill Downs, Louisville Slugger Museum, and The Museum of Natural Science and History. We have some great shopping and resturaunts too. If there is anything you want to know about this area feel free to pm me.
