Anyone fly to Toronto recently - Are you required to test at YYZ?

In the last 10 days I’ve spent nearly $700 on tests….$360 of that was totally my choice. None of that would have been needed with positive result docs.

If I had had to pay for all the tests we had in FL it would have been an additional $500.

If you have a PCR with a positive result, after 14 days of the test date you can travel freely for up to 180 days I think without needing a new PCR. So, assuming you recover fine, it's a lot easier (and cheaper) to travel after getting a positive PCR than having to take one every time you need to return to Canada.

omg I had no idea at all. is this only for Canada or the US as well.

wow that's insane, in a good way. that you don't have to test again 10 days after a positive.

I’m not certain what the rules are for the USA but I think you also require a letter of recovery from a doctor. They only have to wait 5 days not the 10 like Canadians.

US needs a doctor’s recovery note as well as the positive test, and it’s good for 90 days. Canada doesn’t need a note, and you can use your positive PCR test results for 180 days to travel test-free.

Can I ask you fine people about the flip case?

I'm in Toronto now - flew to YYZ, fully vaxxed, Neg PCR test, all went well. (TY to all who responded)
On our way back to the US we'd like to avoid Pearson because it's generally a pain in the neck plus the PCR test.

If we drive to Buffalo to grab a flight there, do they ask for a neg PCR at the bridge (Rainbow/Peace)?
Or just the vaxx cards?

I googled and couldn't find any *official* information indicating you only need to be fully vaccinated, no PCR.

TIA

Check the CDC. I’m not certain but I think you can drive across with just proof of vax. At worst they will want a RAT done the day before.

Something to note though…if you are driving a rental car you probably can’t take it across. A couple of things….the registration of the car has to be from the same country as your drivers license and also the rental company’s generally don’t allow you to leave a car in another country.

Currently, to drive across the land border from Canada to the US you do NOT need to present a covid test (antigen or otherwise) but you do need to be vaccinated and be prepared to show proof.

Thank you so much for this.
We are driving a rental. They (Budget) confirmed to us they will rent us a one-way car we can drop off at their Buf airport office. - of course, at a premium price - super expensive for 1 day, but still less than 3x PCR tests + the hassle of having to deal with the zoo that is Pearson.

You might want to do some further investigation into taking a rental across the border. It can be problematic. Perhaps a phone call to the US border agency.

We recently arrived in Pearson from MCO and was a real breeze―short lines, no one getting tested. The people who do the test seemed to be packing up as well. We arrived at around 830pm, so maybe they close shop around that time.

The US does not require PCR tests for entry, though PCR is one of the acceptable test types. You only need an antigen when flying to the US. See CDC website: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/testing-international-air-travelers.html

All air passengers 2 years or older with a flight departing to the US from a foreign country at or after 12:01am EST (5:01am GMT) on December 6, 2021, are required show a negative COVID-19 viral test result taken no more than 1 day before travel, or documentation of having recovered from COVID-19 in the past 90 days, before they board their flight.

and

You must be tested with a viral test to look for current infection – these include an antigen test or a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT).

In Ontario, you can obtain an antigen test for travel at many pharmacies for about CAD$40 per test; some places are cheaper, I believe as low as ~$20 per test. You may need to make an appointment with the pharmacy to obtain the test, so check with the location if they require appointments or allow walk-ups.

Wanted to give feedback in appreciation to those who replied.
I truly love this forum. The wealth of information is amazing, and so are the people that participate.

So I went and came back and all went well.
Had to go to Toronto to check on my property (pre-covid I'd go every 2-3 months) after not being there for a long time
Flew from MCO - direct flight to YYZ, fully vaxxed, did ArriveCan, negative PCR. Was not selected for a test so went thru arrivals at Pearson in a breeze.

Back to FL was a breeze too - Car rental in TO (one-way car at Budget), drove to Peace Bridge, went thru in a breeze, officer only asked if I was vaxxed, no PCR test. Flight in BUF, back to the Sunshine state safe and sound.

For those considering coming to FL (or elsewhere) from the GTA, I **strongly** suggest driving to BUF and taking a flight there. The border is virtually empty (of cars, lots of trucks, but those are separate lanes anyway). BUF airport also deserted, going thru security was FAST, night and day when compared to the ZOO that is Pearson.

Anyway, thank you to those who replied.
