Anyone flown out of Ft. Myers airport?

I am thinking about extending our stay and the flight is much cheaper flying out of Ft. Myers than Orlando. Never been there and wanted to see how easy it is to get around, traffic and time to get there etc. Also, is the car rental return located onsite? Thanks!

Hi Shuteye,

Ft Myers Airport is much smaller and less hectic than Orlando. It is very easy to access from the main highway and car rental return is onsite and within walking distance to airport entrance. I can not tell you how long of a drive it is from Orlando since we were in Sarasota at the time and drove about 90 minutes to get to Ft Myers. Good Luck!

Fort Myers is a beautiful modern airport and easy to get around. We flew in there for March break in 2009 since we stayed in Naples which was like 30 minutes south. I think all the car rentals are located on site. I know we rented from National and they were right outside the airport.

We've done the drive from WDW to Ft Myers in about 3.5 hours. My parents spend the winter in Bonita Springs, which is about 25 minutes south of the Ft Myers airport.

In the past few years they have built a very nice modern terminal, and the airport is very easy to get to, get around, and navigate. Most car rentals are on-site, and you can walk to the terminal after returning.

This does not apply to you, since you'll be departing from RSW, but the thing that my parents love is the 'cell phone lot'. They arrive, and park in this lot. We'll call from the plane once we land, and get the OK to turn on cell phones, to let them know we've arrived. We'll call again when we have our bags. We get outside, and they are pulling up. Throw the bags in the car, hop in, and we're on our way.

It's really a great little airport.

RSW is great...I would allow 3 hours from Orlando, 3 1/2 to be safe. Rental agencies are on site..you return your car, and head to the elevators to the terminal, or you can cross outside on the lower level and then head up to departures. There are only 2 terminal "wings" and is very manageable. A few shops, places to eat. Very clean, nice, I like it a lot. The signs are marked well for entrance once you turn off of 75. I am flying into Sarasota and out of RSW next week(again)Just double check your car rental, sometimes they charge extra for picking up a car one place and dropping at another. One note, the gas stations are right off of 75, not really right outside the airport, so depending on your rental agreement if you need to get the gas yourself, I would do so closer to 75.
