...and something gross happened that the customers were better off not knowing??? :rotfl:

Did I ever tell you guys about the time I stepped in a vat of barbeque sauce, but the manager wouldn't throw it out -- so we served it all day!!!!!

Um, sorry about that!

Who or what stepped in the BBQ sauce? What wasn't thrown out?

I worked at a seafood restaurant a long time ago. I was the daytime manager, so I was the one who got there early, unlocked the doors, and turned off the alarm system. The drill was that I stopped by the phone at the front desk on my way in, called the alarm company, and then headed back to the alarm control panel, which was in a storage room at the back of the kitchen. It was a long walk, and I had less than a minute to get there after hanging up the phone, so I never had time to turn on any lights on my way.

The storage room was long, narrow, and dark. One morning, as I was on my way in there, I saw a HUGE rat run in there ahead of me. I only had a few seconds to get back there and turn off the alarm or else the police would come. I don't know how I did it, but I went back there in the dark with that rat, turned off the alarm, and then turned and ran like the devil himself was after me! I never did see the rat again, thank God.

Sorry, LOL, better edit that! I stepped in it! My dirty shoe right in it! I kind of fell in when I was stepping up on it to get to a high shelf and and the lid fripped off!

I was 17 - again, sorry about that!

I was cleaning out the coffee urn at the end of the day and after I drained it I found the cleaning towel from the day before in there. Apparently, someone accidentally left it in there from the night before. Funny thing is, lots of people commented how good the coffee was that day.

Well, my SO is a cook so I've heard my share of stories. I don't know if I'm brave enough to share any of them though.

OK thanks for explaining how you managed to step into a vat of sauce. So did you walk around with BBQ sauce on your leg all day? :rotfl:

I probably smelled like it all day -- the guys probably thought I had some great new perfume!!! :teeth:

I worked in a LARGE chain resturant, as a server and as a manager. I can honestly say that with that company and at all the three locations I have worked at we never had ANYTHING gross that I was aware of or saw. It was very regulated and stuff.

One family owned small resturant that I worked in was another story. Once some chicken fingers fell off the plate when the MANAGER picked up the plate and turned to walk out the door. She just picked them up and served them. They also used to RINSE the dirty dishes off and then re-use them if they were in a rush and they were out of dishes. GROSS... I used to love eating there and then after I worked there I never went back!!! I didn't work there very long either...

During the late 1970's, my mom worked at a convenience store that also served hot foods like chicken, potato wedges and hot subs. They sliced the meats in the store. Well, one day my mom got her finger too close to the blade and cut part of the tip off. She ended up in the ER and was back to work the next day. Found out the roast beef she was cutting was served. They never found the cut off slice of my mom's finger. :sad2:

In my early college years I worked in fast food. I came in first thing in the morning and prepped the salad bar, cutting up all the veggies, pouring dressing into smaller containers, etc.

At first I thought it was bad enough that I was told to strain the dressing, because people drop all kinds of things into it (including veggies, of course, and coins!)

But the worst was when I was washing up the food processor, and a piece was stuck. Somebody told me "Oh, that piece doesn't come off" just as it popped off. I said something back about how disgusting it was inside the hole where this piece fit, there were little bits of shredded carrot stuck in there. I stuck my finger in to wipe them out, then realized they were moving...! :crazy2: :faint:

The manager would not let me throw out any of the food in the salad bar. Needless to say, I didn't ever eat the salad there again, and I didn't let anyone else I knew, either.

this sounds like the beginning of a great ghost story!

....and late at night, the night crew would hear a faint, scratch, scratch. scratch, next to the meat cutter, and a very small voice that would say, "Wear's.......my.......hand.......????"

Yes, something bad happened that we don't want customers to know. But it only happened to certain regulars who were nasty to the servers and stiffed them on tips. So most of you are safe --- ;)

One time I was working the closing shift at a place kinda like putt-putt and they made me and another girl clean the men and womans public restrooms. :crazy2: I was furious :furious: as this wasn't part of my job, they pay other people to do that. While cleaning the toilets, I didn't feel like going back and forth using different brushes for the inside and for the seat.... so I would dip the cleaning brush inside the toilet, clean it and then clean the seat. :rolleyes1 I absolutely hate public restrooms so I made sure I was done in less than 10 minutes. I walked out on them a couple of days later for various reasons, one being that they told me I would be paid $8 an hour, got my first paycheck $5.25 an hour?? See ya. :wave2:
