Anyone ever work for the US Census?

I am new to this board and I just recently got hired as an enumerator. I begin training on 3/26. I was told that it's a 40 hour training through five days. However, my training days are spread through the course of two weeks. The pay is relative good at $22 per hour. They did mention that after training, I can do work 30+ hours per week.

What area are you in for the $22, even $11 is higher then the starting here. The posted wage is $8.75 -$20.
I have not heard anything but, the phone calls were starting last week, I called to make sure my flexability in hours was on there. From my score the gentleman said I should be called.

Our family could use the money so bad,

Hi, I'm in Bozeman and my training is April 13th as well. The guy I talked with in Billings wasn't very forthcoming when I told him I could only do nights and weekends. He just said it would be okay and then didn't tell me how many hours. Did your contact let you know those things? Thanks!
I was told that I have to commit to 20 hours a week min. I may have to work evenings and weekends if I cannot get access to certain places during the week. I was told that I have to complete my assignments and log in at least 20 hours but other than that there wasn't a set schedule..except for the training. I am also getting 11.00 an hour plus
.50 a mile staring when I leave my house.

I had received the congratulatory call and told I would hear at the end of March, well it is the end of March and nothing yet! I am glad to hear they may call in the evening. I put down I was flexible with my schedule, just in case.

Good luck to everyone scheduled already!

Thanks for the info! Wow, when it rains it pours. A friend is having me work in April and May for her during the days right when this started. I'm probably crazy to do both, but I want the money for my Disney trip in June. ;) I guess my family will have to see what it's like not having dinner made and the house clean for a few months since I'll be working 50 hours a week. Yikes.

Did your contact tell you much about address canvassing? The guy I spoke with said there was minimal contact with people at this stage but others who have posted made it seem like we would be talking with people. Just wondering. Good luck!

I'm in San Francisco, California and $22 per hour is reasonable since the cost of living out here is outrageous. For $20 out here, all you can get is a good cheeseburger and a diet coke. lol I think the payrate for the Census is determine by the cost of living in your area and the rate of inflation. I also heard that selection of position is also determine by what neighborhood you live in,

Anyone hear anything new? I got a call last week, the congratulations etc and we will be hiring in late March or if you don't hear then we will call for 2010.

my sis starts training in NJ (Warren Cty) on 4/13/09. I don't know much more, though.

I got hired for a job with the US Census as a census enumerator. But from there website it seems right now it is just Address Canvassing. I get paid 14.50 plus .58 per mile. They said that the job will last for 8 weeks. What happen after those eight weeks do I do another area or will they give you an opportunity to do more work or what?

I had my first day of Crew Leader Assistant training today. I don't know a whole lot, but I will share what I can. The rate of pay is different everywhere - I'm not even sure it is the same for everyone in a certain area. We spent the morning filling out paper work and the afternoon activating our hand held computers. (Payroll is done through direct deposit. If you would like to keep your Census money in a separate account, be sure to have an account opened before your first day of training.) The chain of command is the enumerator/lister (Our assigned area has about 18 listers. Our Assigned Area is about a county and a half). The listers report to their CL-crew leader and CLA-crew leader assistant. The CLs report to a FOS-Field Operations Supervisor. All of those positions are in the field. There are other people working in offices, but I don't know their chain of command.

We were told we would be working about 8 weeks. The time will vary from day to day and week to week. There is NO OVERTIME or guarantee of a certain number of hours each week. They were very strict about keeping things within the budget. We will be in training this week, then assist the CL's in training the listers next week. The following week, work will begin verifying addresses door to door. We will be doing some hands on address verification later in the week. It sounded like they are going to push pretty hard to make the six week goal.

Of the crew leaders at our training, most of them had worked as enumerators during the 2000 Census. The ones that worked the first phase (the current phase) were called back to work the actual census in 2000. (One worked steady for 2 years.) They said it is common to work additional phases, because people have already been trained. One lady said she worked the first phase, but wasn't called back to work the additional phases in 2000, so there are no guarantees.

They said the lister turnover rate is normally pretty high because people find permanent jobs. I think with the ecomony, the workers for this census will see less turnover. I also think with so many unemployed people, the census will be pretty quick to get rid of people who are slacking.

We had some homework. They went over things pretty quickly. There is a test at the end and if we don't pass, we no longer have a job.

We did have one Crew Leader at our training who will be training people continually during the 6 week campaign as replacements. So if you haven't received a call yet, don't give up hope. People will be receiving calls for several weeks yet. I do not see a nationwide time table of when each phase is supposed to begin and end, so I don't know if that varies across the country.

Goodluck to anyone still waiting on a call and congrats to everyone who will be working on the census.

Wow, thanks for all the great information. My DH and I were both called to work as enumerators. We have training starting March 30th.

Hi. I had received a call on March 13th asking how many hours/what hours I was available to work.....

Today I received another phone call telling me my test score (I had already gotten it from the 1st phone call) and that they will be hiring based on score and job availability and there is no guarantee of a job but if you dont get hired now you may be hired in the future. This was all a voice mail on my answering machine.

Still hoping to be hired....

Wow thanks for the information!
I have not heard anything yet, but they just started making calls last week. I did get a call today for Insurance accident investagator. Mostly commercial vehical accidents. A lot of my police work. college background for reports and all the hazmat, boating, photography trainning would be utilized.
I am on disability so it is good to find something part time work from home. A real answer to prayer. Even if I get called for census, that will work in too with the flexability.

I would work from home and be on call 24/7. Time and half for any calls after 5 pm and until 8:30 am, travel cost .40 cents a mile.
My dh employer is closing up either tomorrow or Wed. forever, 42 years the only job since highschool. He is no. 2 in senority. They filed bankruptcy. There are some people looking at it to buy, but will not be the Union shop or rate he has.

Cross my fingers, send good thoughts.

So they only pay by direct deposit? no check?

My DBF was offered a job with the census this weekend. He turned them down. HE'S AN IDIOT. 18$ an hour, and we need to pay for Disney! He called them back, but it was too late - they lost his record number, and can't find it. They keep saying they'll call him back, but never do. I could just kill him. I'm so mad.

I can't believe he had to be talked into $18.00 an hour:joker:
Anytime anyone would offer me that kind of money I would be so dang thrilled. :confused3
good luck

Thanks.... the training interfered with two days of school, and I said I'd take notes - and then we realized it was all presentations those days.. so we were like "Oh no!!!!" :scared1:

I wish I had known what was going on while he was on the phone, he just kept telling me to be quiet.

JohnB29 - They really stressed direct deposit! There seemed to be the capability to issue paper checks, but we were strongly discouraged from paper checks.

Thanks for the info. :goodvibesI got hired a few weeks back and start training next week, starting on the 30th. I got a call a few days back to verify that I would be there and, as it turns out, they changed my training location. It's a little closer so that's good. I also didn't realize that we get paid for our travel time (to training) as well as mileage. The more money, the better.

I did ask when we get paid (isn't that why we are doing this :rotfl2:) and he said it takes about 11 days to get first deposit and we get paid every Wed. From what I understand I'll be working starting right after training. Yeah!

I'll report back after first day of enumertor training.
