I had my first day of Crew Leader Assistant training today. I don't know a whole lot, but I will share what I can. The rate of pay is different everywhere - I'm not even sure it is the same for everyone in a certain area. We spent the morning filling out paper work and the afternoon activating our hand held computers. (Payroll is done through direct deposit. If you would like to keep your Census money in a separate account, be sure to have an account opened before your first day of training.) The chain of command is the enumerator/lister (Our assigned area has about 18 listers. Our Assigned Area is about a county and a half). The listers report to their CL-crew leader and CLA-crew leader assistant. The CLs report to a FOS-Field Operations Supervisor. All of those positions are in the field. There are other people working in offices, but I don't know their chain of command.
We were told we would be working about 8 weeks. The time will vary from day to day and week to week. There is NO OVERTIME or guarantee of a certain number of hours each week. They were very strict about keeping things within the budget. We will be in training this week, then assist the CL's in training the listers next week. The following week, work will begin verifying addresses door to door. We will be doing some hands on address verification later in the week. It sounded like they are going to push pretty hard to make the six week goal.
Of the crew leaders at our training, most of them had worked as enumerators during the 2000 Census. The ones that worked the first phase (the current phase) were called back to work the actual census in 2000. (One worked steady for 2 years.) They said it is common to work additional phases, because people have already been trained. One lady said she worked the first phase, but wasn't called back to work the additional phases in 2000, so there are no guarantees.
They said the lister turnover rate is normally pretty high because people find permanent jobs. I think with the ecomony, the workers for this census will see less turnover. I also think with so many unemployed people, the census will be pretty quick to get rid of people who are slacking.
We had some homework. They went over things pretty quickly. There is a test at the end and if we don't pass, we no longer have a job.
We did have one Crew Leader at our training who will be training people continually during the 6 week campaign as replacements. So if you haven't received a call yet, don't give up hope. People will be receiving calls for several weeks yet. I do not see a nationwide time table of when each phase is supposed to begin and end, so I don't know if that varies across the country.
Goodluck to anyone still waiting on a call and congrats to everyone who will be working on the census.
