Did anyone every actually vacation on the island of St. Marteen? I have only been there twice on a cruise but have a chance to vacation there and not sure if we will like it or not? The resort looks really nice and it won't cost me a penny (timeshare) but for airfare. Did anyone ever rent a car there or isn't it worth the effort? Thanks in advance.

I went with my family years ago and my parents just went last year for their anniversary.

It's a laid back island, very quiet (though I suppose that depends on the resort.) Honestly I'd go back in a heartbeat. Beautiful.

I've stayed on St. Maarten a couple of times. I do think you need a car because the French and Dutch sides are completely different and are both worth exploring. Also, there are a wide variety of restaurants, both in Phillipsburg and Marigot. Tons of beaches, all very different.....taxis are fairly expensive so I would rent a car.

My aunt has owned a timeshare on St. Martin since 1983. I've been several times throughout my life.

1) Definitely rent the car
2) Definitely check out "out of the way" beaches that you find on maps/alongside the road, lock the car, walk through the brush, and have a blast on your "private beach"
3) Find the Cliffhanger Bar (Dutch Side) and have a drink at sunset (breathtakingly amazing)
4) Eat dinner ever night on the French side and enjoy some great meals

Can't wait to go back!!!

I have just visted it on cruises before, too. But it seems like such a nice place, I would definitely go and stay there!
