I'm sure my experience was rare, but I won't ever use Orbitz again. Christmas 2001 we booked tickets on Orbitz to see my family at Christmas. E-tickets, got our confirmation, no problem.
A few days before Christmas, DH thought he would surprise me with tickets to Rome because they were so cheap on Orbitz. In-laws got involved, long story, but then DH was looking for tickets for all of us to London instead. He tried to buy several times, but was always told that the flight was sold out. The next morning he finds an e-mail from Orbitz that his parents had tickets. We called Orbitz, said that we were always given the message that tix were unavailable, never told that we had tickets until this a.m. and didn't want them since we would be traveling as a family and had already made other plans. We had to fight, but she finally cancelled my in-laws' tickets to London.
Two weeks later as we are boarding at the gate to go see my family in MI, the flight attendant won't let us on the plane. She says Orbitz issued us tickets, we showed her all of our documentation that said we were ticketless but she kept insisting that we weren't who we said we were and that we weren't going anywhere without giving her our tickets. We watched our plane depart. We went to the airline counter and they would do nothing since we bought through Orbitz. They were terribly rude, my husband was rude back, I cried. Finally, a really nice woman at the counter got a really nice supervisor who did a lot of calling for us.
Turns out Orbitz had cancelled our flight to MI when they cancelled our in-laws' flight to London. Orbitz was completely unapologetic for their mistake and wanted us to pay a ridiculous amount of money for new tickets. The Delta supervisor got his regional supervisor who approved a flight for us the next day at the original price we paid Orbitz. That Delta supervisor was our hero.
