I found an interesting turorial on converting my D50 to Infrared. Anyone ever mess around with this? Love to see some example pics and hear about your experience- did you do the conversion yourself or pay to have it done?

there's someone here on the DIS that does infrared photography. I'd do a search to find out who it is, but the search is down. Try google?

Yup I have done quite a bit of IR photography, but mostly with my Sony digi-cams. I have played around with my DSLR and a R72 filter a few times, but have never been able to get great results. I have seen some amazing photos from these converted DSLR cameras, and the Nikons seem to do much better than the Canons for IR.

I have a converted Canon D60 (lifepixels did it for me) and I have also done some with an IR filter with long exposures. You can find some of my stuff at this url:

The first 10 are IR with a filter.

Here is one with my converted D60 - a false color one. Takes a bit of PS work for color; less if you want b&w.

One of the things you have to watch out for is flare from the lens. Some lenses work better than other.

I have dabbled some in the past with my old sony f717. I keep forgetting to give it a try with the canon XT. Neither are converted, I don't have multiple cameras.

Even though the converted camera will take regular shots just by adding a special filter.

IR is cool though.

Straight from the cam and then auto levels.

this one had some PS work but I can not remember the workflow any more. I guess it should have included straightening the horizon, heheheheee

I wish I had a dSLR to sacrifice for an IR camera. I've seen some really cool stuff with at MLB baseball games with IR... it makes them look like vintage photos.

Some of the p&s cameras do a great job with IR. Check the lifepixels site for ones they recommend.

I use an old bust trusty Sony DSC-V1...it dose just fine for IR......

thats for a fuji finepix s3 not the canon s3 but will keep looking but may just decide to go with filters on the k100 instead of true IR

Converting a camera means you can do them handheld. With the filter, you will have exposures of 30 seconds or longer. Go over to flickr and search for IR or digital IR. You'll find some good info in their discussions.

Thats what i guessed which is why i want to convert the s3 since i am no longer using it since i got my pentax. I have a small p&s should i ever need it in an emergency so will keep looking to see if the canon is a good candidate to convert

The Canon S3 *is* on that list, at the end of the list of Canon cameras, right above the Fuji S3.

For a Canon S3, apparently, all you need to get started is a Hoya R72 filter, for about $30, and some PP. Here's a couple of links to another forum about using the Canon S3 for IR:

DPreview #1 <- starts out with a cool sample pic
DPreview #2
DPreview #3 <- the post by mba007 has specifics of what settings they used.
DPreview #4

And, here is a gallery of IR photos done with an S2....

It might be worth trying before going down the whole convert-the-camera route....
