Anyone ever hear of problems with pins in carry-ons?

The question of carry-on vs. checked baggage often comes up from casual traders over on the Transportation Board. I know the general consensus here is carry-on, and Lauri and I have never had a problem with pins in our carry-ons.

I was wondering if anyone has ever reported a problem or heard of anyone having a problem with TSA and their pins in carry-ons. I never have, but I haven't frequented the other trading boards (dizpins, dizneypins, etc) in a while.

At MCO they are used to the pins. They reran one of our four carry on bags. On the way down, every bag was hand searched. They asked (first) if we had jewelry in them. Interesting question for a ten year old boy (DS), but they checked them (thoroughly) quickly. Not a problem. I don't think I would ever check pins.

I've had more trouble with my cell phone and loose pocket change than I have with pins.

Nope, not a problem at all. They go right through security with nary a second glance.

Nope, never have had a problem having my pins in my carry-on. I just got back from Disney World~Sept. 12 and had no problems on the way home or on the way down to FL. In fact if I could not put them in my carry-on, I would not bring any of my pins at all.

Comming back from Paris in may they had the whole bag out and went through it but they were very pleasant and when they had had a look there was no problem. The only time I have taken pins in my luggage was the first time i flew with them as their value was not much.
The ammount of money invested is now a reason the take them carry on

One person did post on a recent thread on the Transportation Board they packed their pins in their checked luggage, TSA searched, and the poster said some of their pins were missing.

The main concern some people have, though, is that security will confiscate their pins as potential weapons, the way they have with nail clippers, knitting needles, and many other things. Personally, I've never heard or read of anything like that happening and wondered if anyone else has either here or elsewhere.

That's my #1 pin nightmare to put my pin bag in checked baggage only to find out that someone helped themselves to my pins or worse having been confiscated.

We've had the same experience as others- they do check them on occassion, but we have never lost any. Bringing some of them in November - will let you know then. Caroline

I had sissors confiscated once and was offered 4 options, one of which was to put the item in a priority mailer and mail it to myself - at my expense.

Who has expressed those concerns? BTW, I have flown monthly since 9/11 and have never had a problem with nail clippers.

As I mentioned in my OP, a lot of the concerns I've read on the DIS that pins could be taken for the same reason come from casual traders who have asked on the Transportation Board. This comes from various reports since 9/11 about TSA confiscating different items at security for fear they could be used as weapons.

Typically someone who hasn't flown in a while but has bought some traders off eBay will ask on the Transportation Board if they will have a problem with security or if they should pack the pins in their checked baggage. Someone will recommend checked baggage just in case; someone else will say there should be no problem, especially at MCO; and someone else will suggest the carry-on because they or someone they know lost pins when their checked bags were searched.

I've never heard of a problem with pins in carry-ons and I'm glad to hear that no one else has either.

Ok, whenever I fly there are always issues (don't ask me why, long story). If I get stopped at security with my pins I just politely explain to them that I work for Claires and I travel from city to city showing off a new line of Disney ear rings. I then tell the security guy that the black Mickey pin back is a perfect shade for him and matches the black in their eyes. By that time they usually just want to get rid of me so they hand me my bag and send me on my way.

I have noticed that the security guys are really worried about my pin bag going through pin puberty as they keep rubbing Stridex pads all over it after it is X-rayed. Does anyone know, do X-ray machines cause pimples?
