Anyone ever had a tooth pulled and implant put in?

OK totally spooked about the implant thing now.....not excited about it taking so long and having a gap in my teeth for months...even though it is a molar.....

can you see a bridge...any metal parts......

I could just stay on the antibiotics and liquid diet...it is good for wt loss!!!!

My DD is missing permant teeth and after 5 years of braces has 2 implants. She breezed through the implant process. She even went out with her friends in the evening after having the pin inserted in the morning. The way it works is that the pin is inserted into the jaw and then it heals for 6 months. The whole time it is under the surface of the gums so it isnt like you see this pin sticking out. Then you go back to the oral surgeon and he exposes the pin and it heals for a few days and then you go to the dentist to have a crown placed on top of the pin. Our only problem is that when the crowns were being placed one of the pins came lose. So the oral surgeon took it out , we let it heal another 6 months and had the pin put in again and she should have the crown placed next month. The surgeon is redoing this for free because it should not have gone wrong he said in 20 years it has only happened to him 2 times. I was lucky that my insurance covered half and that is very unusual. Some insurances wont touch the implant but will cover the crown ontop.

I'm "in the process" too. I had to have a tooth extracted
because it broke at the root(previous root canal). They put in
a bone graft at the time because I got talked into an implant.
I was supposed to make an appointment to go back to have
the implant put in two months later. It's two months now and
I'm still considering my options. Maryland bridge is something
I've considered but both my dentist and the oral surgeon discouraged me because they say two more teeth get compromised with a Maryland bridge. My mom has one and she
agrees that two other teeth were filed down for the bridge
attachments. She also got an implant 10 years ago-that's when
implants started getting poplular. She says she's never felt comfortable with the implant - get the bridge. I really trust my
dentist completely but he's not inside my head AND the cost
of the implant is extreme but not covered by insurance. I'm really
conflicted about this too! Thanks to the poster who said they
waited and had problems, I've been worried about that too.
Gotta get some decisions made here.

A bridge looks exactly like your natural teeth. The metal is under the porcelain crowns - so no, there is no metal showing. Your dentist can show you several pictures from various dental journals. The only person who will know it is not your tooth is your dentist and hygienist!;) :D

If I had to choose, I would get the bridge hands down. This is also what my Dad said. I know alot of people have implants and they are happy with them - I'm glad for them and hope their implants continue to do well. However, I have heard too many horror stories. I also just finished a continuing educational class in periodontal implants - the success rates are not encouraging. Ofcourse there are alot of extraneous variables to consider.

Implants also require special care - the titanium implant can't be cleaned with the "regular" dental tools that we use. All it would take is for one hygienist to not know this.....and you've got a failed implant.

The success rate for a bridge is around 95% (I have never seen one fail), the success rate for an implant is about 78% and this is for a patient with NO conditions and perfect oral health! Ofcourse there is the financial aspect to consider. A three unit bridge in our office will run approximately $2,300.00 and insurance will cover half of that. A peridontal implant runs around $5,000 and I don't know of any insurance plans that cover this.

If you have any other questions, fire!:wave2:
