Anyone ever gotten a late fee waived on a mortgage payment?

I know people post all the time about getting a late fee removed from a credit card due to their history of good payments etc. We are in a situation where my husband started a new job and we won't have his direct deposit in time for our mortgage payment to not be "late." And unfortunately, due to some bad planning, we don't have the $$ in savings at the moment to cover it.

I called the mortgage company to put the payment on a credit card (as we will get his direct deposit literally 2 days after the "late" designation) but they don't accept credit card payments. So I'm kind of screwed. It's about a $100 late fee - has anyone ever gotten one of these waived? We have paid our mortgage on time for 11 years.

As an aside, the woman from the mortgage company talked to me like I was a simpleton and somehow trying to cheat them when I asked about paying on a credit card. Well excuse me - we've never been in this situation before, so I needed to ask. Geez.

Call back and ask to speak to a supervisor-someone who has the power to waive the late fee due to the odd situation. It does happen and it doesn't hurt to ask. If they won't do it, just add the late fee into your payment and pay it the moment that money is in your account.

Does the credit card have checks that you can write to yourself, deposit it and send in the payment?

You know, I have no idea. We never use the credit cards. That's definitely something I can check into! Thanks!

You can go into the bank with a credit card and an ID and get a cash advance. The fee is a percentage and usually has a minimum - like, 4% with a minimum fee of $25. Call the card and ask the terms. I am SURE it will be less than $100.

Tarheel618 I think you have totally solved my problem! I can actually transfer cash from the credit card into my checking and then use that. It's a higher interest rate but since I will be turning around 2 days later and paying it off, it's not a problem. Thank you so much for suggesting that!

You can also purchase a money order with your credit card and then deposit the money order into your account or go to the mortgage company office and pay them with the money order.

Our mortgage is through our CU. I accidentally transferred my payment from checking to savings instead of checking to mortgage - wishful thinking ;)
I didn't realize I had made the error until several weeks later. I called the CU and they waived the fee. They said they will do it ONCE during the life of the loan as a "courtesy". So, I can't make that mistake again in the next 14 years. :upsidedow

Yes but it was due to a bank error. :) I make our payments online and over a holiday weekend I made the payment, it said it would post on the 14th but it didn't post until the 17th (holiday was the 16th). I had all the paperwork saying when it would post so we called the mortgage company and told them it was their error and we weren't paying a late fee, they asked us to fax all the paperwork over and they would do a credit on the fee. We did, it took them a few months but they finally credited our account for the late fee.
I do like the suggestion of using an advance from your cc to cover it, but be careful and make sure you know the fees are less then what you'll get making a late mortgage payment. :)
