Anyone Ever Get Sick at Disneyworld?

My DS and DN left lunch at the castle with us because DN wasn't feeling well. She got sick before they made it out of the castle. Disney CM's were great. They brought her to guest services where they decided she needed a doctor. A van came to get them and took then to a local clinic where she was diagnosed with a severe inner ear infection. She was then taken to have the prescription filled before being brought back to her hotel. My sis was VERY impressed with the CM's. Never good to be sick, but when you are away from home, not knowing any doctors we were very well taken care of.

OMG yes! Our last trip two days before we left my son was vomiting. We lived in CA. and I had non-refundable plane reservations. I spent the entire two days nursing him and when it was time to leave he was weak but not sick anymore and so we went. Our first day there we went to Epcot and he got a fever so we were in the first aid station for awhile. The next day he was fine! We had one good day then my DD and I got sick and spent the last 2 days of the trip in our hotel room with fevers and upset stomachs, while DH took DS to the parks. We had to pay to have a doctor come out to our room. On our last day there at All Star Music, I had planned for a late flight home figuring after check out we could walk around DTD, go eat, etc. But since we were sick that was the last thing I wanted to do. I called the front desk to explain the situation and ask if we could stay in the room alittle longer. They said no so there I was parked on a bench somewhere in DTD counting the hours till we could all go home!
Now whenever we travel anywhere that is my biggest fear that someone will get sick right before we go. With a family of 6 the odds are pretty high. I still have good memories from that trip though, and that's what I focus on. Now I am keeping my fingers crossed for our upcoming trip. Plus we plan to take lots of vitamins, get lots of rest and do tons of handwashing! :teeth:

We have been to WDW hundreds of times since 1988, and we every so often get a bit of a stomach bug. DW has a sensitive stomach, and we always take bottled water with us. Just keep your hands off of the railings around the parks, and carry a small, refillable squeeze bottle of hand sanitizer and use it! It's a good way to keep clear of germs.
Another thought comes to mind, and I do not want to sound panic minded, but with this bird flu going around, and all the people from other countries where it is more prevalent, coming to WDW, I would be exceptionally carefull. Just a thought.

On one trip DW, DS, and DD all got sick with some stomach bug. One night after Fantasmic DS woke up vomiting. He was sick teh whole next day, then DD the next day, then DD was sick as we were driving home. Not sure how I avoided it, but wound up playing nursemaid to all for a few days there. IT is true; it is no fun to be sick at WDW.

This past trip I got really sick on my last day visiting MK. I think it was vertigo but at the time people thought I was dehydrated and it was my fault because I didn't drink enough water. My parents and I rode Splash Mt and Thunder Mt and went to Liberty Tree to get something to eat. Now to add to my problems I don't sweat like normal people and I barely do at all. Now I can recognize when I am getting overheated and get into some airconditioned area and drink some water. Then no problems, I had experiences the overheating, losing vision, etc and I took care of myself and was fine within ten minutes. Not so this day. I walked to Liberty Tree and couldn't FEEL the airconditioning. I thought I was overheated and it would go away but it didn't. I felt sick, hot, and didn't feel like eating. I just closed my eyes and sat while my parents ate. Then I was getting dizzy every time I moved my head. My parents took me to first aid where everyone thought I was dehydrated and started giving me water and Vitamin drinks. I laid there for a couple hours, got a little to eat, then went right back to First Aide. My parents went around and enjoyed the park. I didn't get any better and had to call for a CM to pick up my family and I and take us to the parking lot because I couldn't move or I would be sick. I tried to sleep my problems away and when I figured out that it was my equilibrium I tried to move as little as possible. Luckily I got better each day and within a week I was fine. I was sad though because I lost two days of Disney fun! Worst I have ever felt in my life! This just goes to show that what you think it is at first may not always be the case!

::MickeyMo Yes, but it was my own fault. Luckily it only lasted a day and I was only sick in the hotel room, not in the parks. ::MinnieMo

Yup, been there, done that. I think it was our Christmas trip in 1996/97 that I was really sick. I had a terrible fever. Despite the warm weather I was cold, and all my family members gave me their jackets...I think I was wearing five coats by the end of the day...and to top it all off, it happened to be New Year's Eve. My DSis was really upset when I wanted to go to bed instead of head out to the fireworks. I only had a 103 degree fever afterall!

It is horrible to be sick in Disney World!

Back n 1996 my DW and I went ot WDW for our 5th weddng anniversary. A couple of days into the trip I got the stomach flu,,,fever and vomiting. After spending the next 48 hours in the room with my lovely DW taking care of me I thought I started to feel better. I felt bad that she stayed in the room the whole time so I decided to try and go to MGM. In the bus I started to feel a little queezy. We got to the park and it did not take long to realize I made a mistake. On mainstreet I felt as if I was going to vomit so I sat down and asked my DW to get me a plastic shopping bag. After what I percieved was entirely to long I got up and went to get a bag myself. I saw my wife standing talking to a CM and when I walked up I guess I looked like death warmed over because the CM immediatley handed me a bag. I ran to a corner of the store where I thought I would be out of the way of other guests and let it go. Before I got done there was a CM standing next to me with a wheelchair. They insisted that I ride in it to the medical facility in the park. They put me in a bed and gave me medicine. After a while they arrainged for a private vehicle ride back to the resort.

MY DW got a different bug right before we left but we both mad it home without any problems.

They sure responded fast. I like to think that it is because they are concerned for their guests but I am sure that it is that they don't want sick people walking all around the park. :confused3

DH got sick last year (Jun04) on our first full day. He was not feeling well, so we went back to FW so he could rest. He was sick all night, so the next morning we called the number at the comfort station phones. We were not sure if it was a virus or gall bladder. The paramedics checked him out and gave him an option of having the clinic nearby come and get him, or us going to the hospital. Since I had three boys to watch over, he opted for the clinic. At the clinic, they were not sure either, so they sent him to Celebration Hospital. Drs there said it was a stomach virus. The clinic picked him up at the hospital and brought him back to FW. Disney provided all of the transportation free. He was much better the next day and we went to EPCOT. We went slow and watched what he ate.

I brought my mom, my sister, her 4 kids [including my oldest nephew, who is 18, lives in PA and used ME from the airport btw; worked out great] to WDW the week before last [10/3 thru 10/8]. We stayed at PC, and I got a 5-day hopper for my nephew and Fla Seasonal AP's for everyone else. Planned it since last November, when I went overnight with my youngest nephew.

The plan on Monday, the 3rd, was for me to go first and check-in, mostly because I wanted to set-up birthday cake and decorations as a surprise [the trip was a big birthday present for everyone this year, because we had some biggies - 13, 16, 18, 70]. Monday morning, I woke up with a toothache :earseek: - I actually woke myself up apparently when I bit down or ground my teeth, because the pain was what woke me up. I was determined not to let it mess things up, particularly for everyone else, so I tried to ignore it, and went ahead, checked in early, did the little birthday thing, kept going. Took pain relievers, didn't eat anything cold, used Ambesol [sp?]. I could barely open my mouth, and I couldn't sleep. I went to the parks, and really tried to enjoy myself, but it was tough. By Thursday, I was done. I asked my sister to go with me to a dentist, and we had everyone else continue on, go to MGM. It wound up I had to have 2 teeth extracted; I got the stitches out the past Thursday.

I definitely did not have the time I wanted to have, but I think everyone else did, and I'd -probably!- do the same thing if [heaven forbid!!!] anything like that happened again. On the plus side, by Friday morning I was feeling better, and was thrilled by my first trip to CRT for breakfast! And I'm planning a weekend trip in December for myself, my mom, and one of my sister's kids to see a little more of what I missed this month. Life goes on. ::yes::

Oh man! toothaches are THE worst!!!! :earseek: :faint:

I am not looking to get flamed by saying this.....
I just want to say that if someone is ill in your family BEFORE you leave on your trip it is probably best to postpone or cancel your trip.
Now I know that if you didn't purchase insurance you would be in a nonrefundable situation but it is not safe for your family or the rest of the people that are at Disney who want to stay well.

I know that when 1 of my children catches something usually within the week everyone in our family ends up with it. So...if you have a family member that is ill and contagious it is likely that the rest of your family will miss out on their vacation as well because they will likely fall ill too.

I have a coworker that last year had a son with chicken pox but would not give up her "nonrefundable" tickets and took him anyway on an airplane (had to cover him so no one would notice!!) and to Disney. I couldn't imagine wanting to put so many other people at risk not too mention her owns son health. He should have been resting at home in bed not being dragged around the parks while he is contagious.

As I said earlier I am not looking to be flamed....just want to point out my opinion that when you are sick before you leave you should stay home.

AND BUY INSURANCE!!!! I never leave home without it.

No flame here, it is an excellent idea to keep in mind!

DD got sick in the middle of our vacation 3 years ago. We were staying at the WL at that time and just called down to the front desk. They gave me the number to a doctor that does resort calls all over Orlando. I called his secretary up and scheduled an in room visit for 2 hours later. He came over and spent at least an hour with us to get DD used to having a stranger examine her. He diagnosed strep, called in the script, and had the pharmacy deliver it within 3 hours. The cost for the doctor I believe was around $150 and the meds were extra. Our insurance company reimbursed us but if they hadn't we would have still done it. It was the most comfortable thing to have an actual "housecall".

I've never gotten sick on vacation, but every single year I come home with a terrible cold! I can only imagine how many germs there are with so many people visiting the parks!!! :cold:

My husband thinks I am insane worrying about stuff like this. I spend months planning and getting totally excited, and then two weeks before, I start to freak out that someone will get sick. You just want something like this to be perfect. Last summer my mom woke up sick her first night in Disney, and spent the whole trip in her room with a high fever. How no one else came down with it I don't know, cause we all had to be run down getting up early and staying up way too late. :teeth: Anyway, I worry about it everytime.

The stomach flu is what I am so worried about as we are planning to go in December. We are big hand washers and purell users! Guess it can really only last a day, but we will certainly keep our hands out of our mouths! Thanks for reminding us of that.

I really agree. I can handle colds and stuff like that. But the stomach flu in a hotel room, I can't imagine.

Last October the night before flying home my husband, 6yr old son and myself all got a case of food poisoning. Luckily my 2year old and friend didn't eat the culprit so at least they were fine and she could help the rest of us. It was a very unpleasant trip home but at least it was the end of the trip!

I was sick when we arrived there two weeks ago...bronchitis and a sinus infection. It was WONDERFUL on the plane, let me tell you! I ignored it, but had NO voice the entire time. It's really cruel to have no voice and then have your 4 year old force you on Small World FOUR TIMES. Singing is the only thing that purges that song from my head and I COULDN'T DO IT!!!!!!!

You have a great point and when we went with my DS I really thought he was well, then our first day there the fever popped up. When myself and DD then got sick we did our best to keep away from others. I would never want to ruin someone else's trip by getting them sick and I can't imagine anyone else being so thoughtless of others that they would do what your co-worker did. I think I'm going to Sam's Club tomorrow and stocking up on Purell and Lysol wipes..... all this talk is making me nervous!
