Anyone ever get free upgrade by calling hotel a few days before trip?

I have read somewhere on here that people have done this, but I just can't find it. Anyone know anything? It's worth a shot! It seems that lots of people get free upgrades at WL, at least from what I have read.

It seems like more report free upgrades if they ask while checking in.
