DH and my 7 and 4 year olds have the flu.

Took DS and DD to the hospital last night because I could not get their fevers down at all from 104. They confirmed the flu. I was scared to death.

They gave them both amantadine. Is anyone else taking this? my 4 yr old is having a little trouble keeping it down.

Thanks in advance.

So sorry for your family. I hope they feel better by Christmas.

My DD had the flu, right after thanksgiving. That was a tough week!!! They gave us tamiflu, which she immediatley threw up, so that did not help at all. I think, really you just have to wait it out.
I know it is scary!
Hope they are better by Christmas!!

Sorry I can't help about the med - never heard of it before - but a friendly suggestion?

If DH & the children aren't feeling better by Christmas Day (and from what I've seen and read, they'll probably actually feel a bit worse by then) you might consider postponing the event for a few days..

I'm sure you're very excited to see the looks on their faces when they see what "Santa" brought, but feeling miserable from the flu will REALLY put a damper on their spirits..

Just a suggestion - and I'll be saying an extra special prayer that they're all feeling better soon..

Oh - and take care of yourself too!!!

This sure is a bummer.... :(

C. Ann,

That is a great suggestion. I already informed all of our relatives that they will not see us on Christmas Day but I never thought about delaying our celebration if they weren't up to it. If they are not feeling better by Christmas I will definately consider this.

I do hope they are feeling better by then. We are hanging out in our "nook" today. They are just watching cartoons while I clean and do laundry. I think I'm going to break our washer and dryer if I keep this up.

maci,

I think the Dr. said that Tamiflu is basically the same thing they gave my children except that ours is a smaller dose and is liquid.

Thanks for the well wishes.

Being as young as they are - and I'm assuming you won't have people tromping in and out of your house - I'll bet if you limited them to mostly watching videos (if they even feel well enough for that) they wouldn't even realize that the "real" Christmas Day has already gone by! :)

I feel SOOOOOOO bad for all of you.. Couldn't the "flu" at least take a "holiday" the week of Christmas????????? :(

C. Ann,

Yes. I am not allowing anyone in my house at this point. My Dad even offered to drive the medicine down if I couldn't find it in our area-most pharmacies are out of it. I told him no way! We finally found the medicine at a local hospital's pharmacy. The pharmacist told me to get there ASAP as she was almost out.

The only thing they are doing today is watching DVD's. I may have to go out and buy some more if they go through their collection.

Everyone take care of themselves!

Thanks again.

I'm very sorry that they are so sick so close to Christmas! I hope everyone starts feeling better very soon. My DD7 and DD3 were exposed to the flu last week (a friend developed a high temp the morning after playing with them) and I've been paranoid ever since, constantly feeling their heads and checking their temperature.

Does anyone know the latent period before symptoms appear? When can I relax?

Peggy

Trust me I have been there, When the little one,s fever's just won't go down it's so scary!!! I am sure they told you to piggy back the Tylenol and Motrin. Give the motrin eveery 7 not 8. Don't give it a chance to wear off. thats ok because it says 6-8 hours, and the tylenol every 4. It may seem as if you are constantly dosing them, Continue to give it even if they over lap. they are totally differant components. and it works. It's doable the trick is not to let it wear off. Because its hard to get it back down. We have had the Norwalk twice in a year last Christmas and again in May. I can not imagine this flu could be as bad. God forbid I hope not!!!!
Another it worked for me point.... Do you have one of those ice crushers to make snow cones? Hawaii ice sells them for like $50. I swear by these things, as soon a sthey get sick I pull it out of the cabinet. They think they are eating snow, And it never fails if I can not get fluid into them, The crushed ice always works! Hope everyone is feeling better!:wave2:

Both of my boys (ages 12 & 13) had the flu earlier in the week, but by day 3 their fevers were down. It didn't seem to hit them as hard as what I had been reading.

I thought DH and I would both catch it for sure, but so far so good. I did catch a cold within the last few days, but it's not the flu by any stretch (I have no fever, body aches, chills, etc.)

Did any of you that have had the flu have the flu shot? Just wondering about real world cases of whether the shot worked or did not work.

Both of my children who now have the flu had the flu shot but not until last Wednesday.

I had to hunt them down because our doctor was out. I guess they didn't have time to build up the immunity.

I have been giving them Gatorade, water, Flavorice and anything else to keep them from getting dehydrated.

By the time they are due for their second dose of the flu shot in January the health dept. will probably be out of them.

I have been giving both Motrin and Tylenol. I particularly like the chewable Motrin tablets. My DD says they taste like Smarties. They are perfect for kids who are having trouble keeping liquids down.

All I want for Christmas is a healthy family.

I also did everything I could to keep them from getting it. I cleaned regurlarly, used hand sanitizer, made sure we continued to eat well and get plenty of vitamins. I tried.:(

Dh has the flu as I type...I can hear him moaning ....I just gave him some tylenol flu....he has been to the doctor but all they gave him was motrin and tylenol and told him to alternate but his fever doesn't seem to be breaking (102.5) so I gave him some tylenol flu..little more dosage then what the doctor perscribed...I swear I don't think the military doctors know what they are doing...anyways, we'll see if this works....hope your family gets well soon floridafam....this is going on day 4 for dh... :(

From what the doctors said, a lot of hospitals and pharmacies are running out of the anti-viral meds that may lessen the flu symptoms or shorten the duration. That is kind of scary.

None of it makes sense. A 10 yr old died locally last week and she had been to the hospital and was having treatment with the anti-viral medicines.

It just seems a little odd this year. Too many people getting sick, too many people dying, strains of the flu we didn't plan for, etc.

Stay healthy everyone.

:( :(

I hope these shots will work.....I hope these shots will work......:(
