Anyone else's kids have a half day off on 9/11?

DS came home yesterday and told me that they have 1/2 day of school on 9/11. Hmmm...not sure how I'm feeling about that. I think I would much rather see his school attend mass at church instead. At his former school, I believe they all attended mass and then homework was not assigned that night.

Isn't 9/11 on a Saturday?
We have that day off since it's the weekend. Have a full day the day before and will have full homework loads. I think last year we didn't even have a moment of silence on the real day. I was peeved that they didn't recognize the day at all.
A half day either on the day or the day before is definitely different.

Yes it is. DS's H.S. is hosting a band contest that day that I'm working at and the attendence by other schools will be light. Not as many accepted invitations as wasas expected and many cited the date and its significance as a reason.

ok. i dont want to be harsh or anything, but i dont understand why they would go half a day. i know it was a huge huge tragedy and we should be thankful for our lives and feel sorrow for the ones that were lost, i just dont see why it would require a half day at school. i would much rather stay in school and come home to have a private prayer.

That's a bummer. I know we count on our Jazz Fest to fund most of the things our booster club does for the band. We'd be hard pressed to find alternative funding if we didn't have as many bands show up as normally do.
