Anyone Else Working on Thanksgiving?

I was supposed to but my surgeon didn't think that I should. I had back surgery on 10/3. For a couple pieces of my spine and $50k, this will be the first "Black Friday" (now Thanksgiving) that I haven't worked in 24 years. I go back to work on Monday after the holiday.

I work at the mouse house and have to work on Thanksgiving
It is only a 6 hr shift 745-145
I was able to give away black Friday,,,,

It's not a holiday here! So yes we're stuck working (though I'm self employed and work from home so will be cooking in between working) and the kids are at school. It's not really the same but I'll still do a big dinner & force everyone to listen to why it's important to celebrate Thanksgiving.

I'll be working 4x12 :( I usually work Thanksgiving but it's a trade off for Christmas. We have holidays on Thursday and Friday so the good news is I will be working for $57 an hour for 16 hours. I will make a nice breakfast on Thursday while we watch the parade. Biscuits and sausage gravy, quiche, peach scones and cinnamon bread. Then we will celebrate Thanksgiving on Sunday.

Nope! Finally got my Mon-Fri job, with holidays off.

I'm an RN so I have worked many Thanksgivings over the years.

I'm a SAHM, for sure I will be working :-) Took it easy today as the kids are home the next few days.

When i was in the paid work force and a young woman, I worked 7-8 Thanksgivings (and Christmas and New Years Days) in a row. Luckily , I usually worked the evening shifts. I worked at a movie theatre and we were open 365 days a year. The only concession to holidays was if Christmas Eve fell on a Friday or Saturday, the midnight show was cancelled....whoohoo!

And the real killer was we worked for straight time:scared1: Yup, no overtime for us. Some kind of hold over from our company was all drive-Inns and they didn't have to pay overtime. Of course, as high school and college students, we didn't know if it was really legal or not. Would have been nice to have some helicopter parent to look into it for us!

Honestly, the first few years it really didn't bother me to work. Home wasn't such a great place and at least there was friends at work. After DH and I were dating and getting serious it was more of a pain as i liked to celebrate the holidays with his family. Really, couldn't folks not go to the movies a couple of days out of the year?

I would have bet big money that the execs weren't working on those days.

I worked at assited living place as cook. I have work Thanksgiving and Christmas, New Years DAy too this year. It's okay I am using that extra money to pay off my trip to Washington D.C.

I worked all the holidays for 20+ years in fire service & law enforement. No big deal, but it's someone elses turn now.

When I chose nursing as a career I knew Holidays were part of pkg. I actually love working HOlidays, the day is fun with friends, most old folks are with their families and a lot of families bring us goodies to eat. My favorite times were the Xmas Eve/Xmas midnight shift where we are wrapping our gifts, Trying to pick out nice clothes for Folks who didn't have "orders" placed by family to wear. Just lots of fun and joking happening on my unit.

Not this year, but DH worked Thanksgiving last year and the year or two before that. He's a paramedic. He is scheduled to work Christmas Day this year.

I don't but I have friends that have to. We have a nurse, a chef, and a server in our group of friends and all have to be at work.

DH hs worked more Thanksgivings than not. We have a delivery from Canada coming in and they thought we would be off but it's really no big deal.
We also had a niece pass away at age 21 on Thanksgiving and that really put a damper on the holiday after that.

We're hearing a lot this year about the mean retailers who are forcing their employees to work on Thanksgiving. Well, I've been working on Thanksgiving for a couple years now, and I know a LOT of other people that will be as well.

We're having our family Thanksgiving today because it's when I'm not working. It's not a big deal to me, because it's the meal and the family that make the holiday.

So anyone joining me at work on Thursday?

I have Thanksgiving off but, I really have a problem with places that are open that don't HAVE to be.

Yes, some services must keep going. Hospitals, fire, police, electricity, etc. but there is no need for the grocery store to be open or for retailers to be open. It's just pure greed.

If you are too stupid to remember to get your stuffing before Thursday then you don't deserve to eat stuffing. And why can't people wait till early Friday morning to shop. If the stores open up between 4-6 am even those of us that work could still make it in and those people that worked in retail could actually have a full 24 hours to spend with their families or just sitting on the couch if they choose. And based on what they deal with the month following they deserve that time to rest. :)

You are entitled to your opinion as to whether places should be open or not.
But people who act differently to you are not automatically stupid, impatient or uncaring, they are just different to you.
We don't celebrate Thanksgiving so we will be appreciative of supermarkets, restaurants and cinemas who are providing us with a service.

I pray that one day in the not too distant future, this will be me!!

I've had some jobs where I worked and others where I don't. This year I'm off on Thursday but we have to work Friday.

My mom is a nurse and has always worked at least one of the holidays. She would volunteer so those with little kids could have the day off. This year she is working 7p to 7a Thursday night. We'll do and early lunch and then she'll nap. No biggie. Still fun.

I happen to be off this year. But I will work Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of Christmas weekend. We celebrate the holiday whenever we can all get together. It really drives my husbands family crazy.

DH is a firefighter, and his shift works Thanksgiving 24 hrs. But, this happens to be the yet he is off Christmas Eve and Day :)
