Anyone else ticked if team practice is held on Memorial Day?

If I ever had a coach tell my son he needed a parents note for an excuse, I'd politely tell that coach where to stick it. ;)

You as the coach don't get to determine what *my* child does on his/her day off...and if that means they are sitting on the coach all day, or enjoying the day with their family/friends, so be it.

eta: My DS's coach gets a phone call letting him know when DS will miss practice, and that's all he needs. A quick "DS will not be at practice, because we will be out of town/have other plans, etc" is sufficient.

Well you might need the coach's permission for that

Did you still go to the parade? Sometimes kids have to miss stuff because of their committments, but that doesn't mean the entire family has to miss out.

I'm all about the commitment, but I think the coach is just wrong to ignore the meaning of Memorial Day.

Memorial Day weekend is a BIG weekend for baseball/softball tournaments around here. By Monday, you're only down to the top 4 teams or so in each age group, so it would be a big deal to just blow off a championship game. My son's team has never made it that far, but having to keep the whole weekend open for the tournament has never bothered me.

I'm not so sure it's the games that are a big deal, but the practices.

I see Memorial Day as a reason to celebrate with family & friends. That could include a family baseball game, picnic or other activity. Calling a practice is much different, IMO.

Our high school girls lacrosse team had practice last night from 5 -7 p.m. Maybe the coach figured everyone's weekend was over...........I saw it as unnecessary. (My DD's do not play lacrosse)

My son's swim team had practice yesterday morning from 8:00 - 10:00 am. Most all of the team was there. They would have normally also had practice from 4:00 - 6:00 pm, but that practice was cancelled so that the team could enjoy the rest of Memorial Day with their families.

I don't think practicing on ANY holiday is disrespecting the holiday - as long as you still remember what each holiday is about. We still went to the cemetary and paid our due respects to our loved ones.

What? Picnic's?

Not everyone places the same importance on the day as you do. :confused3

Sorry your day was ruined.

First of all my day was NOT ruined. But given that Memorial Day is a day to honor fallen veterans who fought for us and those that are still living, I find it strange that people don't think of it as important. I know I sound cheesy when I say that, but c'mon - you don't find it sad that people are divorced from who fought on our behalf?

Sorry, I was trying to be nice.

Forget I said anything other than I'm used to it.

I'm cheesy also then......I agree with you.

It is championship season, but still I think it's disrespectful. DH went because he found out too late before he could give his input. We went to church for a sort of "drop-in" prayer time. It was nice, but still not the same as cheering on the local vets. Just because many people don't commemorate Memorial Day doesn't mean the head coach should feed into it.

Didn't you go to the parade without your dh?

We opted to go to a dog show yesterday. I had the choice to enter the show or not. I chose to do so. We missed our town parade for it, as much as I do enjoy our parade, I also enjoy being with friends at the show.
Many people were wearing red white and blue yesterday, I made a metal note to do the same next year.

It is no suprise to me. I find it very disrespectful to those who have given their lives to serve their country. My children did not participate in any games yesterday. I told the coaches that we were not going to be there. I asked the league why they would hold games on such days as Memorial day, Mothers and even Fathers day. What is extending the season a few more weeks. They really didn't care. Its like they had nothing better to do.

But if your son has a required practice for a sport/activity that he is a member of then he does NOT have the day off and has a committment to his teammates to attend practice. If the coach says a note is required or else there are consequences, then a note is required or deal with the consequences whether it be benched the next game, extra laps the next practice, whatever...its called agreeing to the set rules and not thinking you are special and rules don't apply to you. If I (or my parent) ever told a coach where to stick it, I would no longer be part of the team. You don't like the rules, then don't play.

My son's coach does. When my son signed on for the senior team, the rules were spelled out in no uncertain terms. When the coach says jump, we all say how high. It's a royal PITA but it's a high level swim team and it's the commitment we have decided to honor in our family.

I don't agree with coaches, of any sport, having practices on holidays.

And I was glad my kids were raised before they started allowing coaches to plan practices on Sundays. Sunday was my DH's only day off most weeks, so those days were church/family times, not a time for sports practices.

Actually, no, he doesn't. :)

Sports aren't the end-all be-all here that they seem to be in some other places of the country, thank goodness.

Family and school comes first for our teams/coaches ~ sports are a distant third.

No Sunday practices here, either. :)
