QVC had on a garden show yesterday and it really got me in the gardening mood! I even ordered some heirloom tomato plants! Anyone else have spring fever? I'm even plotting out my vegetable garden layout, on paper of course!:lmao:

I know my mom is. They have enough land that they have a huge garden every summer. I love looking through the seed catalogs, but since I'm in an apartment and am limited to what I can grow on my deck, I usually just wait till spring and go buy live plants that I can grow in pots. I'll probably get a couple of kinds of cherry tomatoes and some everbearing strawberries and the rest will be flowers, probably portulaca and some purslane (because they're hard to kill) and Gerber daisies.

We are. We found a great company that will come in and do a raised vegetable garden in your yard and plant it with whatever variety you want. It is not cheap to begin with but I figure the savings of planting veggies we buy normally will save us in the long run.

In the cleveland area? Which company?

Yep!!!! Last year I overdid it on tomato and zucchini (still have lots frozen!), so I'll be cutting back on tomatoes!! I also have some fresh acorn and butternut squash. I'm eliminating pumpkins and melon as well.

I had tried to grow plants from seed, but I do much better with those started from the nursery. This year, I'll go earlier to get some brussels sprouts, broccoli and cauliflower. Mmmmmm. :cloud9:

There's a fun interactive garden planner at http://www.gardeners.com/Kitchen-Garden-Planner/kgp_home,default,pg.html.

Last year I did it from seed. I lost about half the plants- it's too much work for me.
This year I am going to use seedlings I think.

Thanks for that garden planner link. I am debating doing container gardening again or going whole hog and in ground *I would have to fence and cover as we have wild america in our yard.

No, not yet however my garden right now is mostly about perennials. I can't really plant veggies at this house right now.

I have a TON of spring bulbs planted and I am waiting on them to come up.:yay:

I am! The past few days of relatively mild weather got me to thinking about treating my grass, how green and thick I can get it and what I will plant this year. I'm thinking a Fig tree and some Zucchini because Figs are expensive at about $5 for 12 and I can't find Zucchini flowers to fry anywhere here in Pa. I know nothing about growing either so if anyone has some tips or recommendations I'd be glad to hear it. COME ON SPRING!!!!!!!!!

I am! I've got my flower garden mapped out and yesterday even put down all the pine straw that I bought last fall and never got down. Next up will be the pruning of my butterfly bush and other flowering perennials that I never trimmed down in the fall. Oh and once I get that pruning done, I'm going to special order a few more perennials for the bed since I'm trying to reduce the amount of annuals I need.

Then I'll start on the veg. garden beds. They are 4' x 8' raised beds. They need to be weeded, limed, fertilized and then the dirt all turned over. I figure it'll be mid-feb before I get to that part.

Last year I lost my zucchini plants, squash plants, 1/2 my pepper plants and cucumber plants. The other pepper plants, eggplants, green beans, tomatoes and potatoes did very well.
So now I'm trying to figure out what other vegs I can grow. LOL

Got two feet of snow on the ground here but I also have Johnny's Selected Seeds catalog sitting next to my chair. I'll be starting my onion sets soon. The outside planting won't actually happen for about another 4 months. But I'll have jiffy 7's all over the house before you know it.

Does anyone in the Denver area have a garden? We bought a house last fall, and it has a 4x8 garden plot already. But we aren't local to here, so I don't really know what grows well, and when it is safe to plant. I have looked at the CO St Extension website, but first hand experience is nice to have too. The site can get a little technical at times. I need baby steps. :goodvibes

OHHHHHHH....can't wait!!! The kids have decided that they're too big for their swingset, so dh is going to take it down and put in a second planting area. My kids really LOVE some tomatoes!! Definitely going to cut down on the squash and zucchini this year....poor kids can only take so much.:rotfl2: Plenty of tomatoes, cukes, and peppers. Always try and throw in something fun. Hopefully I'll actually get bell peppers this year....last year something got mislabeled because by bell's ended up being Habenero!!!!

Wow, you are so lucky to live in the south, what ahead start!:) For some reason my zucchini didn't do well last year either, hopefully I have better luck this season.

Im in the same boat, we just got to Denver and I was so excited to see that this house has amazing gardens!

So far just from what she didnt till I can tell that corn tomotoes and lavendar grows well here. There are 4 raised gardens here and I cant wait to get in there!

What is the Denver extension website? I need to get down there and get some info! I used the one in Boise all the time and loved it.

I am hoping that strawberries will grow well here.

I can grow gourds, corn and herbs from seed but havent had much luck with anything else. I bought a lot of seeds from Hirts already but mainly herbs.

They had a landscaping company come in and do these gardens I think, there is a sign in the garage.

Unfortunately I don't have the space for a vegetable garden, maybe our next house.

But I do have perennial beds that need some revamping. It's still a bit early for me to start thinking about it - I won't really be able to do anything serious until mid May, that's when we can be reasonably safe that there won't be a frost.

Flower beds are perennial,s o they sort of plan themselves! ;)

Vegetables...I've never had good luck with them, maybe because I don't have much patience. The best vegetable that ever grew was a pumpkin patch which grew completely on its own form our comp[ost pile when I threw the halloween pumpkin back there one Fall. By the end of the flowwowing summer, I had the pumpkin vine growing crazy all over the yard and actually got 2 good sized pumpkins (probably 12-15 lbs) from it!

I do a couple of tomato plants in pots, and sometimes a couple of pepper plants.
