Anyone else out of snow days?

5 snow days built in and we have used 7. I'm sure that will be 8 as of tomorrow. And there is snow in the forecast for Fri, Sun, Mon, and Wed. We leave for WDW on Wed., I hope the roads are ok by then.

Don't ask me why, but here we have no snow days built into our school calendar. We're in Northwest Indiana and experience lake effect snow even when surrounding areas don't get much snow. We missed a day 3 weeks ago and already made it up on MLK day. Now we've missed 2 days due to this blizzard and they already called and said we're making it up President's Day weekend. That stinks because me and my DS have been counting down the days when he gets a 4 day weekend.
We didn't have any plans to go anywhere, but I'm sure there are families that have little vacations planned......
It was my understanding that if the governor ruled it an act of God, we wouldn't have to make up the days. What is a blizzard anyway? Isn't it an act of God?

In Indiana the school district can also petition to not have to make the days up. They have to petition though. Mine has not yet, but I know Indianapolis schools did and it has not been decided yet. The Indianapolis Star reported on it yesterday, so you can search their website for more info to pass along to your officials if you would like to. I know someone posted it on our school districts facebook page as a reminder to them that this is possible since Indy was doing it.

Well, our town has a whole week off in February (which I think is not necessary) and this is only our second year living here (DS is in 2nd grade) so I wasn't sure what they would do. I called the Superintendent's office and she said they have 4 days built in - so far we have used 2 (plus many delayed openings but they don't count) so hopefully we'll be OK.

As it is, the kids are scheduled to be in school till late June as it is, so hopefully they won't go into July! We have no plans anyway...sigh... :3dglasses

We have been out 2 days this week and one a couple of weeks ago. The day a couple of weeks ago will get made up on Preseidents day, and then these two will get made up at the end of the year. We have a two hour delay right now and I am hoping it stays that way and we don't close.

I know it sounds horrible, but I don't want her home another day. I am exhausted keeping her busy stuck inside. It is not like summer when we have things going on every day and can get out. I guess I am not winning mother of year with these thoughts.

:laughing:I'm TOTALLY with you on the bad mother list! My kid's have been out 5 days in the last couple of weeks plus I've lost track of the last start/early dismissals. Couldn't even send them outside yesterday -it was just ice. I'm going to nursing school and the statistics and microbiology still have to get done...

Let's hope this all ends soon!

I know for us that isn't done because it is contractual.
Donna

DH is a teacher, and, for him, inservice is contractual but which days the inservice occurs is not. Last year we had snow days made up on what would have been inservice days and the inservice was tacked on to the end of the year.

We were out of snow days before we used even one. Yes, my school district doesn't build any into the calendar. We will be going to school on President's Day, the Friday before Memorial Day (which was scheduled as a day off for a long weekend), using an in-service day as a school day (teachers will have to make up the in-service hours on their own, after school), and adding one day to the end of the calendar. The school year will now end on June 22nd.

The annoying part is that there was no reason for school to be canceled 2 out of those 4 days. Here's to hoping that there are no more snow days.

School days have to be made up by June 30th. They can't go into July, because the next school year officially starts on July 1st (for fiscal reasons).

I'm just north of Dallas and tomorrow will be the 3rd snow day this week. The roads have 2" of ice still on them and it's going to be below freezing until Saturday.

Hey, we're in McKinney too! I just went out a little while ago to take one of my kids to her friend's house and there's still a lot of ice out there! It was a little scary for me, I hate driving to begin with but especially don't like it with ice! I have a feeling we won't have school AGAIN tomorrow either! Ugh! We're supposed to be in WDW June 5!! Hope they don't tack the days on to the end of the school year or we're screwed!

Well, we found out today that the last day of school is now May 31st (stupid but we have a 3 day weekend and have to go back for 1 day). We have now lost President's day and the inservice day we had scheduled for March but at least we won't be going in June. Of course we are expecting snow again next week and they are talking about taking spring break if we miss anymore. That will not go over well with parents.

My North Texas school district just called the 4th day this week. 2 are planned in the calendar (Good Friday which I will stil keep the kids come from with a religious excused absence and the day after the last day of school). The district website says they will use those 2 days and ask for a waiver for the other two. Here's hoping the worst of the season is behind us!

I'm in the DFW metroplex, and having grown up in central farm-country Illinois, it SCARES me to get on the roads when it gets nasty around here... people are not used to ice or snow and the accidents are crazy! The school district around me has been out since Tuesday and called tomorrow (Friday) already, so that's four this week, plus they had at least one earlier in January. There were two "inclement weather" days scheduled into the school calendar- Good Friday (uh-huh like that would work) and Memorial Day (that they did enforce last year). The kids I work with have been talking rumors about their Spring Break being taken out to replace these days instead of adding days at the end of the calendar year....

We've had ice the past few days, and it's threatening snow tonight/tomorrow, but the real problem has been the cold and the wind chill- the kids I work with don't have "winter" gear... their winter coats consists of hoodies and a sweater, MAYBE jeans and an extra pair of socks, and we've had negative wind chills the past few mornings. The school districts just don't want the kids waiting for buses or walking to school in that cold.

On the bright side, it's been really quiet at work (because although the school's been closed, my library's been open all but one day)... :rotfl:

Just got the call...my kids are out again tomorrow :headache: That's 9 snow days now. Any more we get i'm not worried about as we'll be at Disney :goodvibes So much for booking our trip 2 weeks after school was *supposed to be out. Now the last day is the day before we leave.

DD's are both teachers and they are now up to 9 snow days. They will be making them up at the end of the year, and during their April vacations. Today they cancelled bc of possible structural problems due to the weight of the snow on the flat school roofs. We are in SW Connecticut, looking at more snowfall on Saturday. :sad2:

Used 7 snow days. School has 2 built in. So, long Memorial Weekend is canceled and so is most of Spring Recess. Any more snow days and days will need to be added to end of school year.

It's a sad, sad day when the KIDS are no longer excited that it is a snow day and WANT to go to school instead. :sad2:

I'm really tired of all this snow and ice...

I live in eastern CT along the shoreline and we are into 6 snow days. We never have more than 2 or 3. We did have 4 flood days last year. (100 year storm) They expect a few added to the end of the school year, but never this many. Today they sent out a survey to all us staff and asked whether we would like the days taken from February break, April break or all tacked to the end of the year. At this point we would get out on June 22nd. Last year we got out on the 26th. It was so hot and humid. No AC and it was a full day.

In our town and I think in CT you cannot go past June 30th. Hopefully we will not get to that point.

I am eastern CT on the shoreline too.

We got a survey last night via email from our superintendent. I wonder if you are from the same Regional school district as me?

We have had 6 days...I think. I have lost count. I think we had 2 delays & 2 early dismissals too but don't quote me on that. My mind is confused.

I really hope they decide with the results of this survey to take from Feb break. Even a day or so. The way they have it right now is to day a day from April break. But the day they are taking is Thursday. So the kids end on Friday, have the weekend off, Mon, Tues & Wed & then go to school on Thurs. Friday would be no school due to Good Friday. I am sure that is for people who are going away just in case they come back early for Easter.

They are also proposing taking away a professional day on April 1st. Um..that works for me. I am still in February & have no plans for that day right now.

We have always tacked them on the end. Last year we had 9 days but the band was going to NYC June 3 so they took away an inservice day and two days of spring break.

I am thinking about June 8-14 at WDW so today I emailed the superintendant to see if there was a plan for spring break. We have had 3 snow days and pushed back to June 1. He said that days 4 and 5 would be taken from spring break and that June 8 should be good to go! Unless there are LOTS of snow days, in which case we will just have to take our chances.

We're in Ct too. The school I teach at has had 7 snow days. We were just notified today that we are going to make up 4 days during February break. Teachers and students who have vacation plans can go away. Student absences will be excused. Teacher absences will be made up at some point to be negotiated.

They will discuss further make up plans at the March board of ed meeting.

I haven't heard anything about my girls' schools making up days.
