anyone else having problems w/Direct TV today

Didn't it used to be a policy that if you were not in a local channel access area that the satellite company would allow you to purchase the national feed of abc, cbs, etc? Maybe that is a thing of the past. Might want to check it out.

I even chatted with the agent online and he verified that they do not have local channels in our new area. So if I go with Direct TV then I need to get rabbit ears to get ABC, NBC and CBS??

Our choices are very limited where we are going (no big name cable companies like Verizon, Comcast or even TimeWarner service the area). I loved the lineup of DirecTV because they have all of our favorite channels including Sprout for DS3.

Thanks for the answers. Just seems our area is out of luck.

Yep. HD-DVR would not turn on this morning, by remote or unit buttons. Several unplugs, reboots and a phone call to DTV later, and it's finally working again.

During one of the reboots, there was a message about new features. So basically, it was a massive new rollout failure. Thanks DTV.

Normally very good things to say about DTV, but this was a huge f&*% up.

They should let you pick a city for local's, no? Whats the nearest local region that they do have?

The rep yesterday didn't mention that but I will definitely ask! Thanks.

DH will be so glad to read this thread. He thought it was our receiver too.

When we moved to the sticks of Oregon, the TV stations in Medford were not available through DirecTV. We were expected to use an antenna to get the locals. Only the reception was awful. We lived 30 miles from Medford and that area is quite mountainous. What you have to do then is apply for a waiver. Contact the local stations in your market and explain you cannot get their station clearly at your house and with any luck they will grant the waiver. Then and only then will DirecTV be allowed to offer you the national channels (NYC and LA). You have to get a waiver for each network. I remember NBC was a little reluctant to grant the waiver, but they finally did.

This was 10 years ago that I had to mess with all this. Things might have changed especially how that everything is digital. But if reception is less than stellar and your local stations are reasonable, you may be able to get the networks on satellite. You still won't get your local news, but I can't say I minded one bit!

Our box wouldn't even power on this morning! I figured our box was just fried, since our other one fried over the weekend also. I guess we'll try it again tonight.

Thanks for the information. I'll see if I can find out what we have to do to get the major networks. I could care less about the local news - can't say I have watched local news in several years other than the ticker at the bottom to see if schools were closed for snow days.

I tried to play something on my list and it froze on me ....I turned mine off twice and it is working fine now.....

:confused3 I can only get about half of my HD channels & I get a busy signal when I call - sounds like they are having some problems!

How funny! Our HDDVR wouldn't turn on this morning. I also had to unplug it twice and it seemed to be working fine when I left for work. I thought it was just me!!

I just did a quick Google search and I found an article stating that they were trying to do some upgrades for the 3D programming for the World Cup and ESPN 3D which are all coming soon. Looks like they failed!

If you are ever unsure if your problem is that your receiver might be going on the fritz or if it's a DirecTV problem, just use your remote, go to menu and pull up the history function. It will tell you that there was an update sent this morning at 3am. Of course, you have to go through the hassle of trying to get the receiver working first. At least this way you don't need to worry about whether your HD receiver is dying or not.

Now I'm reading that people think it was bad guide data. I guess Directv is giving all kinds of different answers, so who knows what really happened? Most of us got an update this morning, so something was obviously wrong with the update.

Anyone else just have their receiver power off and then back on by itself? I was ready to run outside and yell at the Brighthouse guy who just showed up to do work across the street, thinking it was somehow his fault. Lol.

mine just turned itself off and now turning on....

Mine just turned itself off and on to! It is so weird that all of us are having this problem.

Be forewarned, it will take WAY longer to come back up than it did during the resets this morning. Mine still isn't back up (it's "receiving satellite info" now).

Mine just did that too and I was just at the "reveal" time in a show. I'm also recording my soaps and now I've missed the last few minutes of One Life to Live. Booo!

Me too! I was watching My Fair Wedding and totally missed the last 5-6 minutes (and the first 4-5 mins of the next episode.) Grrr.
