Anyone else get irrationally jealous when others post vacations on FB?

This is why I limit my FB time. It's not real life. People post all these amazing things that are taking place in their lives. They often are not posting the mundane, terrible or difficult. And for some when I see their peachy perfect posts, I know it's just a happy face and isn't always reality. So they portray all these amazing things which isn't the full story and then I walk away feeling bad about myself.

Now, when my true friends in life do special things, I can honestly say I'm not jealous. Pure happiness for them. But the constant FB barrage of everything is perfect gets tiring. I always compare to a facade and feel worse about my life.

I get what you're saying OP.

Vacations are a hassle? :confused3 You're posting this on a WDW fan message board? :rotfl2:

So you don't vacation after age 40? Weird.

I don't think it's weird.

DH and I are both 56, and just returned from a 10-day vacation to the Smoky Mountains. We rented a cabin so it was a lot of preparing and packing (including kitchen stuff, food, etc.) for it, plus all the unpacking and laundry, so yeah...kind of a hassle in a way.

And the older we get the more we seem to be "creatures of habit" and enjoy our daily "routines" and we don't have that on vacation. Our own "spot" on our own comfortable couch (the cabin's couch wasn't all that comfortable, plus no recliner or footstool to put your feet up), our own beds, etc.

While we do still enjoy vacationing and traveling enough to do it, I do understand where that poster is coming from.

Currently we have a WDW trip planned for next January with our DD and her family and her DH's parents, then a Hawaii trip the following January but who knows after that...maybe more traveling...or maybe not.

I think a lot of older people stop enjoying traveling as much as they did in their "younger years."

Irrationally jealous? No. A bit envious? Sometimes.

OK, maybe I'm playing with semantics or splitting hairs (NOT hares:scared1:)
but there's a difference.

My DD is currently on a Western Caribbean cruise. I'm looking out my window at the umpteenth blizzard we've had to endure this winter. Am I a little envious that she is luxuriating in a spa aboard a luxury cruise ship? You bet. But jealously is far too negative a term for what I'm feeling.

Most of the time when friends or relatives post about their trips I'm just really happy for them and nudge DH to start planning our next trip. We've gotten great ideas for vacations from seeing and reading about trips friends have taken.

Same here! I also enjoy reading reviews.

While I post this reply my two brothers are vacationing in Myrtle Beach. One is there for the second yr for the month of March. The other is visiting for a week or two as they did last yr then on their way to meet the Royal Caribbean's Enchantment for a cruise. I'm sitting here looking out the window at a blizzard. Maybe next yr we will join "one" of them! Can't have too much of a good thing. ;)

I love seeing photos of other people's vacations! I'd much rather look at vacation photos of friends and family enjoying themselves then see posts where someone is upset about something. I do understand what the OP is saying, though.

And to the person who said vacations can be a hassle, I can understand that, too!:) We just returned from a short trip to Disneyland with a 5 year old, a three year old and an eight month old. We had a great time, but there were a few tears and more than one meltdown. And the kids had their moments, too.:rotfl: Seriously, people are going to post the pics with the smiling faces, not the ones where a three year old is furious because her brother told her she had to share the princesses with everyone.:rolleyes1

I know I have no reason to be jealous, we vacation regularly. But I have FB friends who are vacationing in WDW and Cozemel. They are posting pics and updates about how much fun they are having. Maybe because we aren't doing WDW this year? Also, maybe because I can't make people equally jealous as we don't post vacation pics/updates for safety reasons.....

Not at all it makes me smile because usually I have helped plan those WDW trips and to see them having a good time means I did a good job. Which is why they call when it is time to plan another trip.

Most people I know retire and do a ton of traveling. And as for preparing and packing for your vacation that sounds like a typical summer weekend for us heading to the lake. No biggie.

Wow. This is off topic from the fb thing but I am just amazed at this post. I am 53, dh is 58. I can't say we remotely feel this way. Our favorite discussions are where and how we will travel once we are retired. Our youngest is 13 and if he stays on track he will be done with college in 9 years and we will be done with working and free to go away as much as we like and can afford. Even my Mom who is 79 went on two vacations with us last year - one to WDW and one on a cruise.

No. I love vacationing vicariously through my friends' pictures.

Through their pictures and stories, I have added so many places to my 'must see' list that it is imperative that I win the huge Mega Millions jackpot this week.

OMG!!!! I would have to note that all of that cooking, laundry, etc... isn't exactly my idea of a vacation! My inlaws used to travel and vacation like that.

But, it is true that travel, of any kind, can take quite a bit of effort (hassle).. OMG, just the flying alone, if one is traveling by air these days...

I love, LOVE, travel and vacationing.
While I am not quite your age, MIGrandma, physically I am like older... Thank goodness for me that my husband is younger than I am, and is very fit... He can handle most all of the physical demands of traveling and help make it easier on me!

Our next trip will involve flying. Because we really want to go back to Mexico (where it is warm!!!!) And, for this itinerary, it means driving a few hours and an overnight stay near the airport, then flying out the next morning.

But the vacation itself will be basking on the beach and at the pool at a nice all-inclusive resort, where I will be waited on!!! :woohoo:

I am seriously NOT wanting to make anyone 'wistful'...
I don't post photos and brag, etc...
But I just enjoy this topic of travel.

I do apologize, and know that this is off-topic.
Just continuing the conversation from these prior posts.

Sometimes I do. Our vacations are very simple: 2 a year. One using our DVC that we've had for 20 yrs, the other a beach week. Most of my friends have similar trips. But there are a few folks who are definitely fortunate, and go to the Caribbean in winter on a whim, etc.

I think it's the idea they can just do this on a whim that makes me jealous more than the actual destination.

I do! I have family and friends that go to some exotic locations and Disney Parks frequently. When I do start to become envious of my family I just pause, and remember all those hours spent in med school, getting their PHD and years doing their residency and the jealous passes. :lmao: Ain't no way was I subjecting myself to all that work! They have earned it! :goodvibes

I don't think it's splitting hairs. My mom always viewed jealousy as not wanting the other person to have it, where envy is just wishing you had it too. So I agree, for me, jealousy is too strong a word.

To answer the OP's question; yes I have found myself feeling envious of somebody else's vacation photos, especially those of Disney. Because I wan to be there too! I find it happens when we don't have a trip planned ourselves. If we have a vacation planned, it doesn't seem to bother me.

I saw it asked already, but OP why can't you post photos? Like others have said, we don't post while we're gone, but once we get back I post pictures.

DH and I can't wait until he retires so we can travel!

DH is a farmer and part-time crop insurance adjuster, so most of the time (except during spring planting and fall harvesting) he can get away any time he wants to for a vacation so we don't have to "wait for retirement." We have done quite a lot of traveling in our married life including many trips to Florida, 10 cruises, the eastern states, Canada, and lots of camping trips as well. But 5 years ago we bought our own "vacation property" up north (30 acres) and we love going there mostly when we have the time to. Maybe if we didn't have our own property to enjoy, vacations "away" would still hold the appeal that they used to, I don't know.

Our kids have been out of the house for many years (our oldest granddaughter is 20) so we have enjoyed an "empty nest" for awhile now too, so that may have something to do with it as well. :)

Nope, I love seeing everyone's adventures! I have a cousin that vacations the way that I always wish I could- backpacking and hiking through the non-tourist areas of places. I'm not brave enough (or have the means) to do that! But I love seeing those places, and especially seeing them through his eyes.
