I'm not sure if this is the right board to bring this up, but...My wife & I want to continue our every-two-years trip schedule & return to WDW in June, 2002. The problem is our oldest daughter begins college this fall. I'm going to have to borrow SOME of the money to pay for it. I would have to borrow LESS if we didn't take a vacation next year. Sometimes I wonder if I'm a horrible person for even wanting to go to WDW while my kids are in college. On the other hand, it will be seven long years before both my children graduate from college & there's no way we can wait that long!!! Any advice? Anyone else experience this?

jimmiej,

Have not experienced this, my kids are infants, but I lokk at it this way, just because you have kids in college doesn't mean that you have to give up things for yourself. Is this your first trip without kids? Maybe you could celebrate that.

If you can swing it by borrowing the extra cash then you should go. Have a garage sale for extra cash or save you change. any little extras help.

Hope you can find the way to go.:bounce: ;)

Now that our kids are grown we take trips without them. It is just wonderfull. This way we go in Sept when kids are in school and the crouds are less. It gives you time to roam where and when you want. All ot of things are missed by adults who have small children. Next year we will take one of the kids with us, first time in three years. Since he will be 21 it should be allot different.
Go, enjoy and feel no guilt, parents earn it.

Jimmiej, Just today I went to my credit union where I do all my banking. I opened up a "travel account" for next year's trip. I want to stay at the Poly next year so thought I'd start saving now. I will try to put a little bit in the travel account each paycheck and if any extra money happens my way it will go there. Maybe this would work for you.

Instead of Borrowing the money why not see what you can save!!

there are lots of Ideas on those boards for frugal trips and ways to save that you may not have tried or even thought of!!

Start by reading here often and Checking out the Rewards Board, there are programs that pay you to visit websites and give you points that you can exchange for gift certificates.

Also check for money saving codes[can someone post the link for marywaring can't find mine???]

Check all the boards here for more ideas on how to put your trip together yourself and save over buying a package.

And continue to post all your questions cuz the Veterens here can give you lots of advice!!!:bounce:

 :)

Life is too short to ever skip vacations!!! My daughter is just finishing up freshman year, but we're still going to Disney!!! We'll scrimp somewhere else.

I would try to save up as much as possible but if you are like me. paycheck to paycheck with a kid in school, then if you can afford to borrow it ....go.....by the way your college age kids will probably be going on a spring break or two (not neccesarily the wild kind) and you will feel cheated if they get to go and you dont.

Heres my dilemna....we still have a 7 year old at home, and dont think since we are paying for school we should have to take the older one all the time anymore...ohhhhhh the guilt. She goes when we go somewhere tropical like Cancun, but Disney is tooo expensive and she has been several times. Now we also have a 16 year old who wont go if she cant tag a friend along....I cant afford that....so its her choice stay or go....I just import Grandma for such occasions. By the way we have taken friends and even when they pay their own way it costs you a couple hundred more for the "ohhhhh we should probably pay for that since its our idea" items. Now matter what the guilt goes away as soon as you hit the MK and see Mickey....really it does....lol!!!

Go and have fun......

oops forgot this in my post...

best way I found to save on a room on property is with Marys tips...

I got 49 a night a ASSP for this Aug.....definately helps with the costs.

My first born is going to start collge in fall '03. We have a trip planned for this summer and I still haven't gotten the okay from our resident wage earner yet. We will be going because he is just a big kid and when summer starts he will be dying to get to the Poly as much as the rest of us. We would have saved more for college if we didn't do this every year for the last 15 but...we wouldn't have the memories either.
DD is hoping to be an art major, the schools that she seems to be most interested in are within driving distance of our home and of course the cost is quite a bit more than state schools. We have been saving for this since she was born. She would rather live home than give up Disney as a family. She is such a cool kid.
DS has started to learn to fence. He is trying to do real well so he can get a scholarship to Rutgers and then we can keep going to Disney each summer. Again I am amazed by my child. He is only 15 so things can change but if they still want to go I am going to eat macoroni for a month so we can do it.
In the fall I will be going back to work. Some how we will be doing this trip until they are tired of it and then DH and I will be doing it by ourselves I guess. We really will do whatver our children need us to do, pretty much like all parents. I don't think it is awful to graduate with some debt. I did and I worked and paid I off. We had our kids as soon as we were married. DD was concieved at the Poly on our honeymoon. The children will have to understand that we did have a life before we welcomed them into it and we are going to have one as they begin to make their own. We don't do alot of traveling, this is the only thing we do, we occasionally take a day trip to NY for a show and a cheap dinner. We go out for one nice dinner each year for our anniversary. Disney is our one big thing and right now I am not willing to give it up. If that seem selfish then I guess I am but life is short and I don't want to go to my grave thinking I didn't have the time of my life.

My parents offered to pay one semester and I pay the other one and I decided to pay for it all myself! It was the best thing I could have done. They could use the money to help the kids still at home and I had to grow up and take care of myself. I also think I worked much more than my friends and got better grades because It was my hard earned money! I never took out a loan and one year after being on my own and paying my own taxes I got scollarships and I do not owe a penny! I went to UAF and U of Illinois. My DH had help ( national merit schollar)and he only had to pay for his masters and so we only owed about $7000. when we were out! It was great for us and our parents and because we had those broke hard working years we enjoy the 2000 sqare foot house and 31/2kids and the fact I don't have to work even more because we earned it! Mom and dad diden't give us it. My sister on the other hand had mom and dad pay for everything and she got kicked out of a school and never got a degree is working for min wage and is devoriced with 2 kids and guess who is paying the bills and keeping her afloat my parents who are only 3 years away from when they wanted to retire! My kids will have some help... But the college bills will be there own and they will thank me someday! This is just an opinion and I hope you will find a way to go to disney and do all the things you want to in your life!:bounce: :D :pinkbounc

Our second DS is off to Northeastern in the fall, his older brother (a far less 'motivated' student) goes to the State college where I work. He lives at home and one of my supposed "benefits" is tuition remission, except the Commonwealth, in all its wisdom, lowers tuition and increases the fees -- which WE PAY!!. And we still have two kids to go. So in Feb. we purchased membership in DVC. Yes, it's an additional monthly payment. But we can still do our every-other-year trip to the World without coming up with that major chunk of change for a place to stay. Our trips now involve (cheap) air fare and passes. We'd have to get food anyway, so we tend to overlook most of our food expenditures. And with the units we'll be staying in, we can at least have breakfast in the room, as well as snacks. As far as college expenses go, we can only do so much for all of our kids. We'll do what we can, and the kids will pay for the rest. The amount of debt they incur will be up to them. An additional benefit to our membership is the fact that for his grad. gift, our son and two friends are staying in a villa at Wilderness Lodge. In our minds, this beats the famous Beach Week because they can't drink and they won't have a car, but there'll be plenty for them to do. If we had to pay for a hotel on top of flights and passes, we couldn't do it for them.

The bottom line is this: college is one of the most important things you will ever do for your child, but it's not the only thing in life. I like to think our kids will appreciate their educations as well as the memories of WDW we've given them.

That's right-life's too short. You owe it to yourself to do a little something for yourself. We've got one son in college to be an engineer-that could take forever! Our younger son also starts college this fall-jazz studies at University of North Texas (I remember you work in music). Although I'm expecting almost my entire paycheck to be going to fund my sons' colleges, we WILL put a little aside every month for our trips. And I bet if you ask your DD, she'd say you should too!

Use priceline too! I've seen many people on this board get fantastic deals through Priceline. You can book airfare, hotel, and car rental through them.
Also, I go to our local Disney store and buy disney dollars every once in a while. Next thing I know I have a bunch. Also, if you can afford it now, go ahead and buy your passes through the disney store. The passes never expire and prices may go up. You never know!
Whatever you do, don't give up your vacations. You two deserve some time to yourselves!

i am struggling with the same issue. 4 kids and the oldest starts college this fall. thanks for sharing. all of us will be doing us, ioa and 7 day cruise and i am feeling pretty guilty about spending the $$$. i think i will just pay the bill and try to relax and enjoy our family trip. thanks for sharing i needed to hear your views.

I've been to Disney by myself a couple of times and each time my target budge is $1K. (Food, air, hotel, souveniers) I'm sure two adults would be able to hit a target of $1,500, which isn't much. You DO have to be willing to stay at maybe the All Stars or something like that, but when you think about what a small amount this is compared to the college bill, you might feel better.

(It also might be easier to SAVE up to $1K instead of borrowing it)

Just a thought!

maybe its only me but if we give up everything for our kids it seems to put alot of pressure on them, and we get in the habit of saying, you do what i say after all i am paying for this.... this seems to have worked for us,our son is a wildland fire fighter and daughter is a lawyer, payed for on her dime..

Hi All:

We are heading down in august. We have decided to spend alot less for christmas this year because of our trip to wdw in august.
Also we are from Canada so every dollar we spend in the U.S. costs us $1.58/59, so it is a very expensive trip for us. We only go about every 4 or 5 years.
I did alot of reward programs to grab extra cash and pay for my 5 day hopper passes. The rewards program point click disappeared after I had enough money in it to get 3 of the 4 passes that we will need. Still I am happy for the 3 passes I did get for "free".

Deb.

Vacations are like diets. If you never let yourself have the occasional splurge, you eventually resent it like he** and go on a spending binge. Go to the Poly and enjoy it. College costs have a mysterious way of working themselves out. (FINANCIAL AID ALL THE WAY!)
