I probably would have done the same thing I used to in high school when riding the bus and someone said a seat was being saved; "that was really nice of you to save them for us", then sit down and get comfortable.
To me, the key in this is the fact the row was vacant. If they had left some people to hold spaces, that' would have been the difference and would have removed the suspicion that they weren't even in the building yet.

I think that's ridiculous. But in this case, you did know that the seats had apparently been claimed. I think if you don't get to the theater early enough, and the theater doesn't have rules against the saving of seats, then you need to sit in whatever seats haven't been claimed by the time you do arrive. Now if the theater does have the rule that someone must physically be in the seat for it to be claimed, then all bets are off and it's perfectly appropriate to have taken the seats.
It costs a little bit more, but is sooo worth it to avoid the headaches.
