Anyone else dislike how Disney glorifies "Pirates"?

I did not read thru all the posts here, but let's not say Disney holds the torch for glorifying Pirates, or any other character with a less than savory past. I live in Tampa, and we have a whole month dedicated to the Pirate, which includes three parades. We give a Key to the city to the Pirates each year as they "invade the city". All in good fun...
Aliens "invade" a city in Oregon every May - and we all know that most aliens are out to eat us, infect us and wipe us out ....

He never got over the fact that his mom died in a fire in the house he bought for her. He loved her very much, but had issues losing his mom. Hence the 'moving on without mom' theme.

Actually, she died of asphyxiation. She had complained of gas from the furnace leaking, so her sons sent repairmen from the studio. They didn't get it fixed correctly and it let to her death. I would imagine that had to be even worse. Fires happen, sometimes completely by accident, but a failure to fix something correctly that led to your mother's death had to be horrific.

Don't know if they were good or not, but England employed pirates during their war with Spain during Elizabeth I rule. Some of the more notable ones were Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir Francis Drake. Note that they have "Sir" in their titles. They were knighted because of their service to the crown.

And we won't even get into the fact that the imperial forces of so many countries raped, pillaged, sacked and slaughtered their way through other countries, will we? ;)

Yes, but keep in mind these movies are based off fairy tales that were not their own creation... plus Bambi & Pinocchio were already in production when his Mom died. The stories chosen after his death have had the same theme of parents dying (lion king, Frozen, Little Mermaid, Aladdin, etc anyone?)

Ah, yes. You are right. Thanks for correcting me.

What is it with Disney movies that in most of his movies all the Moms are dead or get killed? Did the man have an unhappy childhood. o_O
No. Many Disney stories come from fairy tales, in which the parents are often dead.

I know -- the whole "Disney movies don't have mothers" is a running joke where I work and in our family. You forget how many there are until you start reflecting on it.

How are Knights in this list? There were basically the military of the day. Unless you think all armies are bad.
Because knights were sometimes competitive men doing violent tasks for glory and money. There were knights who were mercenaries that were guilty of all of the atrocities committed by pirates.

She has a dad, but he dies. I don't remember the mom.

Mom is there. She is the maid for Charlotte's mom. The one who tells them the story of the Frog Prince to begin with. And Tiana takes her to the building that becomes the restaurant.

Face it folks, pirates were the 17th Century equivalent of terrorists. Stealing, killing, raping, etc. It wasn't all Errol Flynn and "Captain Blood."
.
Anyone see the movie "Captain Phillips"? Somalian pirates were a big problem from approx. 2005~2010 until organized Navies brought out the big guns. Yes, they killed innocent crews on both commercial and pleasure craft.

Maybe they were colorful and followed a "code," but I am pretty sure ISIS terrorists do as well.

I'll take my chances with a pirate vs a corporate raider any day:rolleyes1

The pirate myth being celebrated by Disney is pure fantasy. After a certain age most children possess the ability to recognize it and the other tales disney has ummm, appropriated ;) as such...and are able to enjoy it as the escapist fare it is. if they're lucky, they'll be able to do so far into their adulthood when revisiting the parks.

BTW - For those who really want to get a dose of pirates, warts and all, check out Black Sails.:thumbsup2 It's def not PG material.

In fairness, I don't Pinocchio should count as having no mom since he starts out as a wooden puppet. Also, you can add that in Ariel's Beginning, it shows Ariel's mom dying while Ariel is still very young.
