I must say, it's one of my biggest worries on the plane. Maybe it's harmless, but when the pilot says to turn off all electronics, and some "important" person keep his phone/blackberry/what-have-you on, I just want to scream! Flying is stressful enough for me, I don't need to die because he had an important call to make!

Can you tell I'm going to be flying soon? :scared1:

I really don't think it's an issue that will bring down the plane. I think they do it because they want everyone's full attention in case of an emergency evacuation on take-off or landing.

Not saying they arent keeping them on, but some 'phones' dont really shut off. You can put them in fly mode so they dont send / receive cell or wifi signals, but they are still 'on'. They shouldnt 'use' them but they will still be on.

Does it bug me? Not really because I just dont think it causes any harm, but it's a rule, and i follow them. I also know that ding when you are at 10k feet and allowed to turn them on.. and sigh when you get the ding going the other way, meaning to shut them off :(. Not so bad if you just fly in and land, but when you circle, or have to take a longer / slower approach that part of the trip seems to take forever...

LOL, this is reminding me of the West Wing episode when Toby is trying to call the White House from a commercial airplane and the flight attendant makes him put his phone away...

flummox this thing with something I bought at Radio Shack?

I don't understand why it bugs people. I know so many people who do this and none of them have ever had a plane come down with them in it.

On the side note, its been proven by multiple investigations that it does no visible or discernible damage or harm to any on board navigation systems but the FAA will still not change its rules. If someone could come up with a way to prove it actually did harm then it would be a different matter.

I will say though, out of trying with three different cell phone providers, none of them worked much past the take off altitude so its kind of a moot point.

Whether or not the phones effect the planes operation, nobody would want to listen to the passenger next to them talking on it through thier flight. If you think the engines make the cabin noisy, Imagine what it would be like with every other person on their phones.

I miss West Wing!

Well, I see I am in the minority.....and I agree if they said that it was safe, I wouldn't have a problem, but since they don't say that and I'm scared enough of flying, it still is gonna freak me out!

So if you are flying and playing with your blackberry/phone/what-have-you and someone is glaring at you during take off/landing, sorry! It's only me :thumbsup2

As already mentioned, any phones you may see that look to be 'on' are probably in 'airplane mode'.
And I truly don't think it's a safety issue. I think that if it were, the FAs would be more severe about seeing the rule ignored. I'm sure we would all hear about any malfunction due to cell phone usage on a plane.

Get on that plane, and ignore those around you. Bring a magazine to concentrate on.

I was flying last week on SW and they announced that all phones had to be completely off during take off and landing, airplane mode was not acceptable during those times. I had connections both ways so I was on a total of 4 flights and they said that each time.

Not really, I tend to mind my own business.

Life is to short to worry about trivial things like that

Unless the reason it's too short is someone didn't follow the rules and shortened it for ya'! ;)

While I suspect that handheld electronics post little actual risk, that's really beside the point. Federal law requires that you follow the directives of the cabin crew, and there is no provision for ignoring them when it's "no big deal."

That said, I rarely see others using electronics when they are not supposed to, and the FAs (at least on Delta) are pretty good at spotting the few who do and "reminding" them to turn it off.

I heard the same thing on my Delta flights a couple of months ago. Airplane mode does not cut it, your phone must be off!

On SW they take it one step forward and they state all electronics, anything with an on or off button must be turned off.

My thoughts are if people continue to blantenly ignore the rule to shut off telephones etc....how long before TSA deems they can not be carried onto a plane at all? Then you will see people stand up and take notice to something that "was not any of their business" before

My basic feel is that while it has not been proven as unsafe, it has not been proven as safe and as such I want them turned off! Flying is stressfull enought as it is, lets just play along and follow the rules. Okey Dokey? :goodvibes

PS> and please don't be playing around with your shoes or liquids cause I am watching you and planning out counter attacks in my head.
