Anyone else annoyed by this trend?

I've noticed lately that I see a lot of people out in public wearing earphones to listen to music. I've seen it most often on teens and I see them in places like Walmart with their families. My niece used to be very bad about this. Have we become that isolated and anti social or do you think it's a result of kids needing to be entertained every second of the day? It annoys me when my niece does it because I can't speak to her with loud music coming through her earphones. Does this annoy anyone else?

I do it when I'm alone shopping - beats the stuff being piped in at the stores!!!

As for your niece - I can remember being a teen and having to go out with my family. Mostly the adults are talking to each other and I was just along for the ride. It makes sense that they can have their own music to listen to.

:)

We had a student come in to interview for a work study position. She sat there with the headphones blasting until it was time for her interview.

She didn't get the job.

Oh the sins committed by the teenagers.

For some reason, it doesn't bother me. I guess I'd much rather see that (a person going about their business, QUIETLY) than to have to deal with the constant cell-phone yacking in the stores.

I plan to wear my iPod this weekend at WDW. I'll be on my own (I'm going for Super Soap and DH will spend his time over at the Food Festival and Disney Quest or by the pool). If someone is talking to me, I'll take it off. Other than that, nobody around me is saying anything I need to hear. It's so nice not to have to walk through a store or a mall and hear some 12 year old yapping away, "Like, omigod! Like, he is so cute? (question mark to indicate that annoying upspeak that is so popular these days - everything is a question) Like, do you think he's cute? Do you think he, like, likes me?" I'll take my iPod over that crap anyday. For me, it's not about entertainment, it's about blocking out annoying people. :teeth:

iPod nation I guess!

I usually bring my headphones with me on the bus and sometimes listen to it when I'm shopping. I just like to listen to music and it drones out the "retail" noises. I never did it when I was with someone, but if I was alone I see nothing wrong with it. I just don't enjoy talking to people in the store - I want to get in and get out as fast as I can.

I wish I enjoyed music enough to get out of an iPod what most folks who have them get out of it. Our society has become much more "hurry up and wait" -- not to mention more cacophonous -- so having an alternative to these conditions would be a great improvement, and iPod serves that role for folks who enjoy them.

Welcome to my world! In NYC, there are more people listening to their iPods on the subway than not...including yours truly...

TONS of people do it on college campuses, including myself at one point or another.

It doesn't bother me unless I am trying to talk to these people but most of them will shut their music off and talk.

It doesn't really bother me if others do this but I couldn't do it myself. If I'm shopping, I need to concentrate...I can zone out the store music but I can't zone out music being piped right into my ears. I guess I am just not that big of a music fan.

I am more worried and concerned. We stopped at Target the other day on our way into town and the parking lot was filled with young teens and most of them were in a group of friends and on a cell phone with other people. We are teaching our kids to "plug in"! They are with a group of people and still on a cell phone with other people!! How are these individuals going to function in a work setting when they are expected to do work on their own!?? They can't even seem to make it through high school on their own ~ they are all plugged into something and communicating with ten different people at a time between cell phones, IM, and whatever else they have going on! I think it should cause concern!!

I was a teen in the 80's and I had my Sony Walkman as did just about every other teen in the world. I listened to it all the time. This isn't a "trend" at all, just newer electronics. :)
How quickly we forget what it was like to be a teen! :goodvibes

Amen to that!

exactly. I walked around with a Walkman as a teen and now I've just replaced it with a mp3 player.

It doesn't mean they've tuned out other people or are antisocial. Kids nowadays are more social then ever, it's just that the medium has changed. They are social via cellphones and instant messaging. They are social in that they exchange new music via their mp3 players. Teenagers everywhere are still going to hang out as groups, we just don't see it because they hang out in groups in cyberspace as opposed to the mall.

I have to agree........at least they aren't bothering me with their overly loud conversations on the phone,it's beyond me where their manners are when they are checking out and still have to have the phone glued to their ears.......I'm sorry but I don't think anyone is all that important to have to be on the phone all the time. As far as the earphones......I do it too especially when I am alone, I am not bothering anyone with my music and it sure beats talking to myself......for the record I am not a teenager and I don't know what I ever did without my ipod!

And our parents complained about many similar trends when we were growing up (cough cough), and we turned out alright. Beyond that, my parents have confirmed ;) that it was the similar for them.

On the contrary, what you're outlining here is perhaps the saving grace. It reminds me of all the concern, 15 years ago, about children switching from board games to video games. What we ended up with was a much more technology-inclined workforce, which has greatly fostered our productivity and competitiveness in the world.

I'd worry about teens using hard drugs, not teens learning to multitask.

Precisely, and very well-put.

I'm sorry but I don't think anyone is all that important to have to be on the phone all the time.
Have many of them actually said to you that they're on the phone so much because they feel they're "important"? I think it is essential to look at things at face-value, without projecting meaning onto those things that isn't there. As mentioned above, it is likely that they're on the phone so much because they're that social, and their social world is far more active and dynamic than we're used to.

i think it's rude when you're with other people (that you know) but when i'm walking to work or on the bus or even shopping on my own i'll have my ipod on...

if someone talks to me i'll take my headphones out... and if i go inside i'll turn the volume down so i can hear what's going on around me so i'm aware of my surroundings but can still enjoy my music...

i also wear my ipod in the gym... but i wouldn't wear it if i was out jogging or cycling (like i've seen people do) too dangerous!

hmmm.. i have worn it once while shopping with my mum but only cos we were having an arguement.. and when that happens i turn into a stroppy teen!
