Anyone else agree????

Whatever happened to just doing the job cause you love to do it. You picked your profession, I picked mine. If you are loving what you are doing, who cares if you get any kind of discount. It's what's inside yourself that really counts. I have never understood why someone would think they are entitled to extras just for doing their jobs.

I agree with the poster who ask where Disney should draw the line. With military members, it's very easy to see via ID card that you and your family are serving. You don't have that active duty military ID, you don't get a discount. How to determine that with firefighters and police officers? What about volunteer firefighters who have other jobs? What about security guards? To say "firefighters and police officers" is including a really big group.

Disney World does appreciate firefighters and police officers. Like they appreciate workers in every chosen profession.

Absolutely not. There are an awful lot of critical jobs in our society, including a lot that are not compensated as well as firefighters or police. While I am exceedingly appreciative of the work of public safety employees, and depend upon them, I don't think they are any more worthy of special discounts than other people who work hard for a living.

I agree with Doctor P and couldn't have said it better.:thumbsup2

I agree and feel the same way:thumbsup2

Lots of professions put their lives on the line every day. What about construction workers, penetentiary personnel, teachers?

I am appreciative of all of these professions, but it's up to Disney where they dole out discounts. I'm sure no one goes into law enforcement hoping for a Disney World discount.

I agree with the majority of responders here...except I'll note that doctors and many folks in any medical professions (nurses, pharmacists) do put their lives at risk on a regular basis. We've perhaps become complacent in remembering that. They are regularly exposed to every infection that comes down the road.

As another poster pointed out - lots of professions have an element of danger or heroism. Many times the risk is not apparent until long after the person signs up for the job.

I totally respect and appreciate the job that each firefighter (my BIL), police officer (4 friends), etc does every day. However I do not share your sentiments.

I do not feel that Disney shows any lack of appreciation or respect to any of those men and women that put their lives on the line. Where do they draw the line?

I'm an ex firefighter , even wildland firefighting (like the fires in CA and FL, trench digging mess)and EMT. My husband is currently active duty Military. There is no way that you could compare what I did and what he does. Most nights I went home at the end of the day, and had access to computers or phones. My husband and I might get to talk about once a week or less while he is gone, and he is gone for months at a time. I loved what I did, and am not downplaying how hard it is to be a firefighter or EMT, but there is a big difference between the two 'sets' of professions IMHO and yea, for the amount of work he does, and for as long as he is away from us, he doesn't get paid much..... but its what he wants to do and I'm proud of him for it..... Discount or not...... O and BTW, if you use the discount they give you for the Military, you don't get to use any other discounts too just in case you were wondering......:rotfl:

I was a CM during the 1998 wildfires in the Orlando area and we had many firefighters and EMTs from all over the country there. Disney wanted to offer all of them free park admission in thanks for all the work they'd done.

However, every. single. one. of the departments said no on the grounds that police, firefighters, and EMTs are not allowed to accept gifts of any kind for their work, because it could be seen as a bribe to get preferential treatment. Even if it doesn't lead to preferential treatment, it could lead to what's called "the appearance of impropriety."

They gave out Mickey firefighter pins instead, as fireflymedic said above, and CMs went out of their way to honor people wearing them and their parties (front of the line, leading guests in a round of applause, etc.).

I agree ! Firemen are paid quite well for the risks, military folks make next to nothing for thier service.

Firemen are only paid well depending on where you live. Where we live there are no paid firemen. It's all volunteer fire departments.

Also, my DH is in law enforcement and no, I don't think we should get a discount just because he does to work and does his job. Someone's got to do it.

what about those crab fisherman in alaska?

they definitely deserve a free disney vacation

In our area, most volunteer fire departments are also paid. They get paid based on the calls to which they respond. It's not a lot of money, but they do get paid. They are just not on a "payroll" per se.

But not every military member puts their life on the line every day, and for some, it was NO days.

My brother was in the AF for 4 years...never went anywhere more interesting than...oh where did he go before being based in San Antonio? Somewhere really hot. Does Biloxi have an AF base? Anyway, he never put even a hair out of place, let alone into harm's way.

Now I don't think that with only 4 years he gets anything from them or from Disney, but even if he did, he was never in harm's way.

The point I was trying to make is that police, firefighters, and emt basicly do about the same job that the majority of the military do without traveling away from home. They put their lives on the line every day.

Give up now...most people are not going to give that kind of credit to police or firefighters. My dh is a cop and we are very use to him getting NO RESPECT.I think teachers and child services are great but firefighters and police are the biggest heros (to me), and after I married one I now know why.We do get a discount at swan but we do not stay there....no meal plan lol I do not care about a discount...I also do not care about other peoples thoughts are on a job that they have not spent one day doing....be a firefighter or L.E. for one whole day and then make that judgement.I know it takes a good man to WANT and CHOOSE to do a job where so many people hate and disrespect them!I think most people would pee their pants if they were put in the shoes of one of these guys for a bad call...

I am thankful for the work these brave people do, but this is a part of the job they chose to take and it was well known before they pursued the position. I have 2 friends that are firefighters/EMT's and both of them say the threat of danger was a major attraction to the job. Again, just my opinion.

In my community we are all volunteer-- EMT's and firefighters. It would be nice if next year's theme for "Give a Day, Get a Day" would allow volunteers in this capacity to receive a free ticket. When I first became an EMT I wanted to drive the ambulance just so I could use the sirens and lights and drive fast, but instead I do CPR and extricate people from vehicles. My pay???? ... a free jacket! ;) And I've been doing this for 12 years. :goodvibes

I do think Disney pays tribute to those in certain helping professions with their artwork and such. I think Disney is a business and we (meaning me too :goodvibes ) sometimes forget that; because we get such magic from it we start to believe it's a committee of magic makers only.

Also, like pp said, where would they draw the line? Every helping profession is vital to our world/community/kids.

OT for teachers, this was sent to me:

WHAT TEACHERS MAKE...

The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life. One man, a big, important corporate executive, decided to explain the problem with education.

He stated firmly, "What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided that his best option in life was to become a teacher?" Then he reminded the other dinner guests what they say about teachers: "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach."

To stress his point he said to another guest; "You're a teacher, Bonnie. Be honest now. What do you make?"

Bonnie, who had a reputation for honesty and frankness replied, "You really want to know what I make?" (She paused for a second, then began...)

"Well, I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could.
I make a C+ feel like the Congressional Medal of Honor recipient.
I make kids sit through 40 minutes of class time when their parents can't make them sit for 5 without an I Pod, Game Cube or movie rental..."

"You want to know what I make?" (She paused again and looked at each and every person at the table...)

"I make kids wonder.
I make them question.
I make them criticize.
I make them apologize and mean it.
I make them have respect and take responsibility for their actions.
I teach them to write and then I make them write.
I make them read, read, read.
I make them show all their work in math."

"I make my students from other countries learn everything they need to know in English while preserving their unique cultural identity.
I make my classroom a place where all my students feel safe.
I make my students stand to say the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, because we live in the United States of America."
"Finally, I make them understand that if they use the gifts they were given, work hard, and follow their hearts, they can succeed in life." (Bonnie paused one last time and then continued...)

"Then, when people try to judge me by what I make, I can hold my head up high and pay no attention to them because of their ignorance..."

"You want to know what I make? I MAKE A DIFFERENCE! What do you make!?"
:hippie:

I could have written this post!:thumbsup2

My husband and I are both volunteers. DH is a fireman and a driver/helper for the Ambulance. I am also a member of the Ambulance. We are completely, 100% volunteer. Like another poster said, we get a free jacket once a year.

My husband is a 911 dispatcher for Police/Fire/Ambulance. I don't think he should get a discount either. Its his job.

I understand what you are saying... but where would they draw the line? I work for child protective services, I go in and take children out of homes where they are being raped, beaten and/or neglected. Many times, I'm on the scene of child abuse before a police officer, my investigation is the exact same as theirs, and I work side by side the entire time... so I could be saying, where is my discount?

Thank you dmslush, for what you do. I teach special education and see the results of what happens both before and after you are involved. Some of the kids I work with are able to be at school because of the work you do. (And I know I don't have the mental strength to do what you do - so my hat's off to you!)
Thank you so much.
:woohoo:
