OK I know this is probably crazy, I doubt the would serve it if it was part of the recall... but I was just hoping that someone has eaten it recently there and could let us know that it was safe. We have 2 young children that LOVE fruit and every time we go to Disney that have a lot of the cantaloupe via the fruit cups and buffets. With the recent recall, it just makes me nervous and I'm not sure if we should abstain from the cantaloupe. The buffet would be easy to avoid of course, but the fruit cup not so much since it is usually mixed in.

Thanks if anyone can help. I did a search, but of course nothing. Probably because I'm the only one so paranoid that I have to ask this! :rotfl2:

We were there this past weekend, had cantaloupe at Animal Kingdom Lodge, Kidani Village...so far so good! 7 yr old and the adults had some.

We ate cantelope over the Sept 29th-Oct3rd period. I did think about it so you are not crazy.

If you're crazy, I'm right there with you. I was reading through some dining reviews and saw a photo of a fruit cup with cantaloupe. I thought, "I hope they have fruit cups without cantaloupe now." :rotfl:

But seriously. I hope they do.

the Listeria outbreak has not impacted FL in any way at this time. This is very much a supplier issue, impacting cantaloupes from Jansen Farms. I promise that if Disney uses this supplier, or any of their suppliers use this supplier, that they are complying with the recall.

This IS a significant and deadly outbreak, but we need to put it into perspective. This hasn't impacted FL, so we can assume that it is generally safe to consume cantaloupe in those areas. The food supply by and large is generally safe. I promise, Disney has safe food handling practices as well. I am a food safety professional, and I feel perfectly good about eating anything at Disney.

The reality is that ALL melons, once they are cut, can pose a food safety risk, and they should also be refrigerated once they are cut.

There is no reason to avoid every single cantaloupe everywhere. This was a limited issue with a single supplier. I am sure that if Disney used that supplier they would have taken the item out of their food. Since they have not, I would expect that they are NOT supplied by this farm and that the cantaloupe is safe.

Actually the fact that people had no problems in the last few weeks means nothing since Listeria can incubate for as long as two months. However, there has been no problems in Florida and the problem is very rare.

The main problem with cantaloupes and listeria is that it is one of the few foods where if the bacteria is present even the best food safety practices might not stop it. (Unlike salmonella and e coli which can usually be eradicated with proper temperatures)

The good news is that even if it is present Listeria will not affect healthy people. So my own personal advice is that I would never allow very young children, the elderly, pregnant women, or someone with a compromised immune system to eat cantaloupe (with the possible exception of one that was locally grown and I opened myself and know that the inside had no contact with the peel). With those exceptions, I would enjoy without worry.

The worst part about listeria is that it can take up to 2 months to develop after you have eaten something infected.

I am avoiding ALL canteloupe right now only because I am pregnant. If I were not, I would eat it at Disney, I would let my kids eat it too. If you are healthy there is a good chance you would not even get sick...its the very young, the very old, the immune compromised and the unborn fetus that are at such great risk.
