We're thinking of visiting one of these restaurants on our next trip, but can't decide which one. (We may push the boat out a bit and make a visit to two) I was wondering if anyone had eaten in any of them, and their thoughts on them

California Grill
Hollywood Brown Derby
Boma's
Flying Fish Cafe
Spoodles
Kona Cafe

Thanks :D

Hi

We have eaten at the following :-

California Grill - We loved this place, on top of the Contemporary. We really enjoyed our dinner here and loved the atmosphere and the views, great view of the castle. Alan had Curried Duck, followed by Tamarind fillet of Beef and finished off with Tangerine Sorbet. I had Four-cheese flat bread, followed by Veggie platter and finished off with Cinnamon Soufflé (yum, yum). We saw the Electrical Water Parade in the lake, I think there is music that goes with this if you were sitting on one of the beaches. We enjoyed the California Grill although it was very loud, we were also lucky to get a window seat. 5/5

Hollywood Brown Derby - Wasn't keen on this restaurant myself.Alan had grouper and I had another veggie pasta dish, we shared a pudding but we can’t remember what it was though. Wouldn't go out of my way to visit again 2/5

Boma's - We both love Boma's Great restaurant and lovely location in AKL, The food is all you can eat and there is plenty of choice. The dessert's are yum and server's are wonderful - we can't wait to go back! 5/5

Spoodles - Lovely location, we had a seat on the Boardwalk early in the evening. Alan asked for Squid and got it complete with legs!!! Would definately give this another try 4/5

I hope this helps, you can see I love my food :D

Hi

We have eaten at Boma's, Flying Fish and Spoodles and would/will return to all of them.

Boma's was a buffet style, with heaps of different types of African style foods to try. You get your plate and go and help yourself to anything that you fancy or would like to try and if you don't like it go back and get something else. There was a selection of different types of breads, dips, veggies, rice, soups, fish, meats loads of stuff not to mention lots of puddings for afters. As well as the more unusual offerings there was a choice of carved meats and vegetables. And for the kids a selection of chicken nuggets, macaroni cheese, etc. Which to the dismay of the cheif my mother-in-law helped herself to because she wasn't adventuroius enough to try anything else. That was until she realised she could go back for something else if she didn't like what she had picked. The atmospher was friendly, informal and fairly noisey (great if you have loud kids like mine, then no one notices how noisey they are). We came out completely stuffed and without making too big of a dint in wallet. Plus it was also a great opportunity to have a peak around the hotel!

Flying Fish again the food was lovely, not a vast choice on the menu I thought (but if there is that makes it more difficult to choose anyway). The atmospher was friendly, and more formal. Hence we got the grandparents to mind the kids whilst we went here, not that you wouldn't take the kids, there were plenty of kids there, but for us it was a place where we could sit, have along enjoyable meal and chillout. Overall a bit pricey but we do like to have a bottle of wine with our meal and for some reason wine is always expensive over there, so this certainly added to the priceyness of the meal.

Spoodles is great if you can't make your mind up what type of food you fancy eating. They have such a wide choice, pizza, tapas, pasta, etc. The atmospher here was lively and friendly. Our favourite here is to have a selection of tapas oh! and a bottle of wine (bumping the price up again).

Where ever you choose I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Mmmm I'm tempted by them all. Thanks Jools and Kaylee.
I was thinking more of a meal for just DH and myself with the kids tucked up in bed, but Boma's sounds like great fun for the kids too. So think I'll try that. :jester:
Really like the sound of California Grill though as a treat for us
Can you see the MK fireworks from there?

I've only eaten at Boma's and would echo what Kaylee and Jools have said. I loved it there, really different food and a great opportunity to have a look at AKL.

I believe you can see the fireworks from Californian Grill, but think that you can only see them from certain tables, and obviously you'd have to get the timing right as well.

Btw, had you considered O'hanas at the Polynesian? It's lovely there and after your meal you could go down to the beach and watch the fireworks from there.

LOL this has to be a first - I see a list where I've eaten at ALL of the above restaurants....slowly but surely my dream of eating at all WDW eateries is coming true :)

California Grill is I think the restaurant I'd go to for a special meal IMHO it's better than Flying Fish and they can cost about the same. The view is great and yes you can see the fireworks from up there and they are AWESOME. I love the flatbreads as an appetiser whilst looking at the menu, also I tend to order appetizers before main course so the meal is strung out just to I can enjoy the atmosphere a little longer

Flying Fish is good but I agree that the menu is limited.

Spoodles is fun for couples and families a like. I love the different choices on the menu and again they do some great flatbreads and it is a little cheaper than CG or FF

I've gone off Hollywwod Brown Derby especially for dinner, it just doesn't do it for me anymore - again I think that the menu is limited but I cannot say no to their GRAPEFRUIT CAKE it is too die for.

Kona Cafe - I've eaten breakfast and dinner here. The desserts at dinner are so wonderfully creative and the food is OK but nothing special, but if you go for breakfast OMG the TONGA TOAST is fabulous and I thoroughly recommend.

Boma's - is one of the best dinner buffets I've been to, it's soooo different I love all the different flavours and all the different desserts and they have a great wine list and it's a great place to go before and after dinner if you wanna see the animals or just to take one of the hotel's tours. And it's the cheapest option, so can't be bad to boot :)

My thoughts,
Boma's . Great food, good price, wonderful location, good staff, with kids having the buffet options means they are always going to get something they like and it gives them the easy option to try a taste of somethings a little more adventurous knowing if they don't like it, it was only a taste and if they do, they can go get some more :) .

Flying Fish. Nice restaurant, great food. Limited menu for some kids, staff were a little "snooty" IMHO. It is a relatively expensive restaurant

Spoodles. Good food (although not everyone is that well versed with some of the tapas options) not too bad price, good staff and a nice decor (although can get noisy)

Haven't tried the others
