I'm wondering if anyone has tried this route recently from BLT or VWL and encountered any problems?

Drove the back way a couple of times in June, and encountered no problems.

explain back way - looked at google and it says 9.6 miles and now some others are definitely closer.

We took a right out of the BLT parking lot, and drove behind the MK, taking a couple of right turns, and then there was a brand new Publix sitting there. It was less than 5 miles from BLT, and so easy to get to. The only thing is that you had to drive behind the MK, but the signs said Disney cast members and guests were allowed.

Thanks for the info. Are there any gates to stop people from coming in that way? Do you have to show resort ID? Just curious.

Not in June - we just drove right thru the MK back stage area. It was almost like being on the Keys to the Kingdom tour.

The Publix is brand new - it had just opened in June. It is such an easy drive from BLT, and a clean, safe and close place to shop.

I don't know if the Publix and new SuperTarget over by Animal Kingdom are closer or not. But it is an easy drive as well.
Go towards Animal Kingdom lodge on Osceola Parkway and turn left at Sherberth Way. Follow Sherberth to Black Lake Road and turn right (just before highway 192). Follow Black Lake Road to traffic light and turn right. Super Target is on left at next light. Publix is on right. This way misses all the heavy traffic on 192. It is also an easy return.

No, that road is a public roadway and accessible to anyone except for the access onto Disney property itself (you would not be allowed to drive into the utilidor) and may be used to drive completely around the backside of the MK property. There are a lot of Disney maintenance facilities back there including the roundhouse area for the trains, Disney topiary nursery and recycling plant. Those areas are visited in some of the Backstage Magic tours offered by Disney.

You can just drive straight thru to other public areas including stores, restaurants and housing developments without any need for security clearance.

Just past the Contemporary there is a sign that says "Service and Authorized Vehicles only"

So technically you are not supposed to use that road.

We stayed at BLT last week and used the road behind MK to get to the Publix with no problems.

Used the access road 3 times during our trip last Oct. The return to BLT is a bit tricky, you need to use the 1st left into BLT, otherwise you need to drive a long ways to do a u-turn.

Hopefully this 'best kept secret' won't get abused, else Disney will clamp down. Got the see the steam engine cross the road.

The Publix is very nice and very convenient.
