Anyone do fundraising/development?

I keep trying to post this but it won't let me start a new thread. Trying again...

I'd like to get into Foundation/Development/Fundraising as my future career. I currently have about 9 years in communications (promotions/marketing) with a BA in Communication Mgmt.
What Master's Degree would be good for standing out in this field, besides an MBA, of course?
Any advice from anyone who is currently in this field?

I am an association management consultant (I have about 20 years experience working for associations as Membership Director, PR Director & Events Manager, plus a couple of years in newspaper marketing & advertising), and fundraising & development are ALWAYS part of what we offer clients. Right now we are building a charitable foundation from the ground up.

It is VERY hard work with a long "results" curve, meaning much of the battle is building trusting relationships. Everyone I know (personal and biz-wise) is approached constantly to support many worthy causes, but the pot of money keeps shrinking and people are becoming very selective.

I have had some training in fundraising & development, and the honest answer is that it is so often all about personality and "charismatic givers" (well-known/admired people who are willing to publicize their giving, lend their name to the cause and reach out to others--Like the President asking Bush Sr. & Clinton to spearhead fundraising for disasters).

I can't answer your question about the right degree, since I don't have one. It has never been a factor.
