So, on another board, I mentioned my two greatest fears. One of which is the garbage disposal. That thing scares the crud out of me!! I didn't grow up with one, so learning to live with one has been hard. I will not ever stick my hand down one.

In fact, I was physically ill while watching early episodes of The Sopranos. Uncle Junior kept getting his hand stuck in the garbage disposal and I was convinced someone was going to come in and turn the sucker on.

After posting that, tons of other also posted an extreme fear of the garbage disposal. I had no idea I was not alone in this! What about the DISers?

I don't like them either. While I'm not deathly afraid of them I can't stop thinking about how your hand could get caught in there pretty easily.

As if that wasn't freaky enough, the other day a small glass fell in there. It was completely in the disposal area and the rubber shield hid the whole thing. Can you imagine if I had never seen it go in there and started that baby up? On top of the scary sound and fear of losing limbs, let's add flying shards of pointy glass. Lovely.

What was the name of that old movie about electricity where the electricty takes over? Anyway, some guys hand was in the disposal and the electricity turned itself on. I'm not "scared" of them, but since watching that movie so long ago, I always think twice before putting my hand in one.

Have you seen that commercial where the guy has his hand in the garbage disposal and his wife walks in? He's apparently just installed a new light and she flips the switch. (The light works because he got great help at the store, but that commercial gives me the heebie-jeebies every time.)

I thought of that commercial the minute I saw this thread!

Yeah, I'm NOT a big fan of garbage disposals. *shiver*
I sent a fork through one years ago and :earseek: I never EVER wanna do THAT again!!!

We don't have one......but I am deathly afraid of cleaning my self-cleaning oven! We have had it for 7 years and I still won't clean it! :o

The switch for our garbage disposal is easy access for small children. My DS's used to turn it on all the time. It would always scare me that they might turn it on when I had my hand in there without me even knowing they were there. I am REALLY freaky about putting my hand in it!!

Same here. We didn't have one either and though I love the convience of being able to shove most leftover foods into the disposal and not worry about them, the thing still scares me to death.

I will not stick my hand in there because every time I think about it, I think of that Halloween ep. of Roseanne where Dan scares the pants off Jackie when he pulls his hand out of the disposal and it's a prosthetic made up to look like he shredded his entire hand up to the wrist.

At our last apt, I had a beta fish named Icthys. His little plastic tank had pretty blue rocks in it, even though Betas really don't need anything in their tank but water and food. :) I was cleaning the tank out and managed to drop some rocks into the disposal. I didn't realize I'd done it till I went to go turn on the disposal much later and heard the awful grinding noise. After a minute or two, I saw and smelled smoke, so I turned the disposal off. The apt fix-it guy came to look at it after we called him and said we broke the disposal. The apt mgr was so ticked off at us.

Oh, they scare me too. I've seen what they do to my spoons!

COunt me in....no way will I stick my hand in ours either. If something falls in there, I make DH take it out. Scares the crud out of me that somehow it wills tart turning while my hand is in there

I have a garbage disposal and I never use that thing. I grew up without one and although I'm not scared of them, I just don't see the use of the them. Wouldn't it just be easier to throw the food/scraps in the garbage can?

I put my hand in ours each time I am getting ready to run it so I do not lose anymore spoons or small glasses.

In our old house the switch was at knee height mounted on the sinkbase cabinet. One time while DH had his hand in there, he accidentily hit the on switch. No loss of limbs. Not even any blood. His finger was badly bruised. While I am not recommending running the GD while your hand is in there, I wanted to let you know that the injury is not as bad as you might imagine.

No, not deathly afraid but I certainly don't enjoy sticking my hand in there to retrieve "whatevers" and yes it does cross my mind that what if this thing goes off.

I always think about "The Incredible Shrinking Woman" with Lily Tomlin. You know how they thought she was killed in the garbage diposal when people talk about disposals.
