Anyone cut their DS's hair with clippers? How hard is it?

There are some great YouTube videos that can walk you through.

It's really not hard, though I have only used the clippers once. My DS4 has shaggy hair and I have been doing scissor cuts on him since he was 14 months old. The few cuts he has gone to someone for have been awful, even though he sat like a statue. I've also done scissor cuts on my DH and finally got some clippers for upkeep.

It's pretty easy and I totally believe most people can do it, no problem. Leave it long the first few times, just until you get the hang of it.

I have a Norelco 180 degree swivel hair trimmer and do my own hair. I usually do a 5 on the top, and 3 on the sides. The swivel feature is great because you can adjust the trimmer to use with either hand if you're going solo I use it about every two to three weeks is as not to get too unruly. My wife will trim the back about once a month.

My hair dresser told me now to cut DS hair. Got a trimmer from Walmart. I use number 4 on bottom, number 5 the middle of head and number 6 on the top. I trim bangs with scirrors. And I use DH shaver to do his ears, which I like cut out and his neck hairs. DS is how 12 been cutting it for a few years. I am no longer allowed to cut DD 14:rolleyes1.

I can't stress enough to spend the money on a good set of clippers. We use Wahl, like a lot of others on here recommend. Got it at Wal-Mart for $39.99. Previously we went through 3 cheaper clippers - in the $10-$20 range & all they did was pull hair & wear out quickly.

I started cutting my own hair about 6-7 years ago. I bought a clipper at an outlet store for $15. That one lasted about 4 years. When it died, I bought a Wahl on Amazon for about $30 and it is still going strong. It is totally simple to use, which is why I can cut my own hair in a snap. Doing it to someone else would be even simpler. I say go for it. You'll save a fortune.

Neat to see so many of us on here saving money as the family barber :thumbsup2
It will be 20 years July 3 since I first cut DH's hair.
It's gone from brown to silver in recent years, lol.

And DS begged me to cut his again this past weekend.
He will be 20 in August.
I gave him his first hair cut, and his most recent hair cut and 95% of all the rest.
He has only had a handful of haircuts from someone other than me-
mostly because it is inconvenient for me to bring the clippers to college to give him a cut- though we have done that :rotfl:

No telling how much $$ we have saved through the years- and my guys always look good~ :goodvibes

You can do this! :flower3:

I am a licensed hairstylist... but you can do it!!!!! If you were too mess it up, you can always take the shorter guard and go over the whole thing. With that length of hair, in 2 weeks it will be grown out again.

I have a nice pair of Wahl clippers. My favorite trimmers for around the ears and hairline are Peanuts. They are super easy to use.

Good luck!:thumbsup2

I know! Same here - saving the $ in this area is addictive. Started years ago with DSs hair, then quickly added DH, then one dog, than the other! (Different clippers for the pups, though! :lmao:) Love saving where we can!

I do both my DH and my DS. Use what seems to be the DIS standard of Wahl clippers, 5/8" guide for my son, and 3/5" for my DH (the thinner it gets, the shorter it gets!).

One easy cleanup tip for everyone, get a paper tablecloth, and cut it in half. I put this down in the kitchen, then put the chair for them on top of it. Makes cleanup super easy and means there's no need to go outside.

I've done DH's hair with the clippers. I went with him to a professional a few times and watched VERY CLOSELY before I even attempted it myself. He likes a #4 back and sides, #3 top. I do the 4 first all over, then I switch to the 3 and just go slightly over the curve of the crown in order to blend. Never had a problem with that. Our clippers also came with tapers for going around each ear, so I do that, then I do the sideburns and back of the neck with no guide. After that, I wet his hair down so I can see if there are any stray long hairs and clip them off with scissors. I found it all to be very easy, even the first time. We bought a Remington that was on sale at Kohl's (along with our 30% off plus some Kohl's cash, we only paid $7).

Recently, however, he wants the top longer. He still lets me use the clippers on the sides and back, but I've had to do scissor trims on the top. He's got many cowlicks...it's been interesting...
