DH and I are almost completely sold on buying DVC and were wondering if anyone has made up their mind about buying or not buying into SS? If you've decided firmly either way, please explain why.

I'm not sure why I would now buy into something other than SS since it is until 2052 while the others are valid only until 2042. I'd be either 77 or 67 when my points expire.

What are your thoughts?

If I were buying now I'd look at price, length of contract and location.

If you like another resort better and can get points at that resort for 20% lower cost (for 20% fewer years), then it would probably be better to go with that resort.

If you don't smoke, have reasonable cholesterol and no family history of early death, get regular checkups, mammograms and colonoscopies -- and like SS -- then go for the 50 years at SS.

We're about 95% sure we're buying in-my husband is doing a little more number crunching. I love the location near the Marketplace/Downtown Disney. Plus we're there so much we should have done this long ago.

That's how we feel. Right now we're waiting for the updated brochure and rates/points listing from our DVC Rep. At $79/pt (until OCT 31, 2003) it is hard to pass up. From the pictures we saw online to the location and some other selling points (50 year contract), I really think this will be the way to go. Plus, at the cost we spend yearly to do WDW and DCL, it would be well worth the money saved. We'll be taking a look at the models this coming December during our WDW stay but I have a feeling we'll be sending in our deposit before then.

We are exactly like you and we too go to Disney so much, that we are kicking ourselves for not joining earlier.

Well, better late than never...

We just sent our paperwork in for the SSR and we are so excited. We seem to always end up at the Marketplace at the end of the night so it's great the hotel is right there. Plus, usually Disney likes to make improvements with every new hotel so I think it will just be even better. My DH and I do not care if we can't walk to Epcot all the time or be right next to park. The bus ride is usually only minutes anyway.....

We did it for the financing option. We have the cash to put down but we used the financing so that way, we can have almost all the money saved up by 04/04 and pay it off then. We won't have to touch our savings at all.....

I just made our annual Dec trip reservations at our usual moderate resort and whoo boy, no discounts and the prices are getting higher. No regrets about our new DVC membership!

Hope this helps! See ya back home at SSR!!!!!

for a new member (if you still can) I would go with BCV - these are within BCV - and I expect in a few years to be the most popular DVC resort. they are the only DVC resorts that has acess to SALB (storm-a-long-bay - the big swimming pool at the BC/YC) If you do the wine/food festavial at Epcot - you will learn quickly how to love BCV. you are close enough to BW to enjoy that too.

I would buy a small contract 150 points at BCV, then another 100 at SSR. yes you can buy at different resorts - but you must have 150 in one or the other.

if you are going through DVC then your first purchase must be 150 points.

Or if the points useage is the selling point - go find OKW on the resale market - even less points, and the original cost is less, and the annual fee is less than SSR. Plus the rooms are bigger. Studios at all the DVC resorts are around the same size - OKW is a little bigger but with 2 queen beds vs 1 queen bed and a sleeper sofa - they don't look it.

than OKW does not have room service (I think SSR will), OKW does not valet parking (does not need it), OKW does not have a great main pool no slide - SSR will have one but I don't think it will be as great as SALB (this pool is very expensive to upkept - plus all the costs of the lifeguards). OKW has no lifeguards and only one kiddie pool at the main area - it has 4 pools - but just one kiddie pool. SSR will have a different type of restaurant - this is kindly like a food court. OKW has Olivia (restuarant) plus 2 snack bars near pools.

My husband and I actually bought 280 points at Saratoga Springs the week they went on sale. We debated BCV for a while but held out hoping they would add years. (We are 27 and 29, so the extra years really do matter to us)
We couldn't be more excited. I love the pictures that Doc posted, the idea of walking to DTD and having a bit more of the "away from it all" feeling I enjoy at Old Key West.
Yeah, it was more expensive than resale, the rooms are smaller than OKW and the points are more, but I couldn't be more excited anyway. This will be our home away from home and I can't wait for our first trip, which will probably be next fall.

We are not because the extra years are likely to be of little benefit to us. If we were younger by about ten years, we would do it right now to lock in our DVC enjoyment for the longer term. This is likely the best price you will see for that resort.

We are looking forward to staying there. We had stayed at DI several times and enjoyed it.

If you go this route, do you get to make reservations at either SS or BCV 11 months out? Or would the 150-contract be 11-month res and the 100-contract be 7-month res?

You can only book at the 11 month window with the points from that resort. Example........150 pts at BCV..... 100 pts at SSR

At the 11 month window you would only be able to book 150 pts at BCV, but you can borrow ahead from BCV's pts and actually book 300 pts there.

You can do the same thing with your SSR's 100 pts.
Or you can wait until the 7 month window and have access to all your points at any resort.

Thanks for clearing that up. Sounds like it could get confusing, but maybe that's only because I'm still trying to learn the 'ins and outs.' :)

We're not planning on adding points. One DS starting college this fall. Just wanted to add that we toured the SS model during Member Day last week at BWV. The model is absolutely beautiful. SS is an impressive sight rising "across the pond" from DD. I'm sure many people visiting DD and the Marketplace have never heard of DVC. This should give DVC lots of new exposure to new potential members. I kinda think DVC already thought of that.:smooth:
